I think it's time for the big switch.

My twitter feed is vile at the moment.

Anyone else switching over?

I use Twitter / X more now than I have ever done but I don't pay much attention to my feed. Even though I have muted accounts I previously needed to follow for work purposes, it's still too long to keep on top of, plus some irrelevant stuff has started appearing in it.

These days, I use it to get the latest news on the subjects I am most interested in, by using the search function. This works really well and I don't get much if any irrelevant dross.

The one exception I have found so far is searches for
"wildflower meadows". For some unfathomable reasons, bots and peddlers of spam have latched onto the topic and lots of tweets saying things like "A meadow dotted with wildflowers is a patchwork of color and beauty" crop up, usually accompanied by a picture of an Asian woman in her underwear, drinking tea, sat in a hotel fully clothed or walking down a street, again, fully clothed. In fact, recently, the accompanying pics have become even more strange because now inanimate objects are featured in them.

There has never been any p0rn, in case anyone is thinking of using a newfound interest in meadows as a ruse for accessing more racy content.

So weird

Long time bluesky user. It's so so much better - basically the algorithm doesn't prioritise engagement and it's control features are top tier. So it's really difficult to troll people, you don't really get stuff hate promoted into your feed, and there are some good lists available for like journos, footie stuff, etc that has migrated over

I too have been thinking of coming off X. I've always managed to avoid the worse stuff on there by keeping a very low profile.

Does anyone use Threads which has a much larger number of posters?

Funnily enough, there's an article about Bluesky in the Guardian this morning https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/12/us-election-bluesky-users-fle

Threads, my personal opinion, is garbage. It promotes engagement above all, so it always feels like you're walking into a conversation halfway, as someone makes the strangest apropos of nothing point you've ever heard

I'm honestly surprised to hear people reporting their twitter feeds being swamped by stuff, because that is not my experience at all. I don't get any porn-related stuff, or any of the other unwanted stuff that you're reporting. Can it be that you're simply using it the wrong way? What I mean is that you have two basic viewing options: 'For you' or 'Following'. So I use 'Following' and that's it: I get the feeds I've chosen.

Regarding Elon Musk's take-over - personally speaking - and not wanting to start a tirade of opposing views - I'm glad he supports free speech. I am genuinely terrified by the attempts to shut free speech down by so-called Liberal regimes, who seem to want to completely control the narrative - under the aegis of so-called hate speech and so on - in order to stop anyone posting things they don't like.

Sure, many of you will disagree, but that's fine, that's free speech! Vive la difference - who wants cultural orthodoxy??

I get tonnes of unwanted stuff on Twitter, most comments I see on topics are Only Fans models completely unrelated to the subject matter commenting for engagement. The only followers/engagement I receive on Twitter are from porn bots. I commented something generic on an authors post about a book he released and I have about 20 likes on this comment, you click on their profiles and every single one of them is a bot.

I am all for free speech but Twitter is too much, there have been numerous examples such as one of the Tate brothers repeatedly calling someone the N word yet there are no consequences. It's not free speech, it's hate speech.

How are "so-called Liberal regimes" trying to shut down free speech in the Western world? It's funny how people on the right talk about this kind of stuff but then they are happy for books to be banned because it mentions something they don't agree with.

It used to be great, now it's just adverts and far right propaganda forced down your throat. An echo chamber of hate. Free speech with no consequences.

Yeah Twitter has become the same, because certain people with the blue tickare getting paid now there's just so much nonsense put on there to promote engagement. Baited questions to get people clicking.

Well, since you asked, here's an example:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-68409929

You might think this is a good thing, but in reality, it's massive government overreach in an attempt to suppress opinions that differ from Trudeau's (and his allies) cultural orthodoxy. It is the proverbial slippery slope towards a kind of totalitarianism. You think I'm exaggerating? Well (for example), if this law is passed, it could enable judges to put people under house arrest if they’re viewed as likely to commit a hate offence. No actual crime would be required for this type of punishment.

And then there's the issue of who monitors this (under Canada's proposals, this doesn't have to be a judge, it could be anyone they employ to do it), and also, of course, there is the question of "quis custodiet ipsos custodes?: who guards the the guards? Who decides what is 'acceptable' and what is 'not acceptable'?

"Hate speech" is, IMHO, an Orwellian crime. It is akin to 'thought crime'.

When you refer to 'people on the right' I'm not sure if you mean me, but a) I certainly don't consider myself to be right wing, or any wing, for that matter. And b) I would never want any book banned. I am an advocate of full fat free speech, warts and all.

I find Twitter/X fine, but then I never venture onto the 'For You' page which is a crap shoot.

BlueSky seems very nice but there is a complete lack of any football content on there

I post on here but nowhere else, don't feel the need to be honest.

I started to read the appallingly bad Daily Mirror online a while back because It was so bad I found It funny In a silly way.

I gave In once and left a derogatory remark about the bloody Royal Family which was 'deactivated' by the DM, any way I used to get In disputes with the Royal Family fan boys on there, and my account was closed by the DM for three weeks.

Had to sign back In to leave comments after three weeks which I did but I've knocked that on the head now too.

Got to go now and pick the leaves up that have fell from me silver birch tree that have made a mess on me lawn.

Goodbye.

Definitely moving towards Bluesky. Twitter has become toxic since Musk took over. I never used to block anybody. Now I'm blocking 2 or 3 right wing, ignorant posters per day

I keep getting videos of women boasting about sleeping with 100 men in one day, it's quite weird, imagine being 100th in that queue and how they do they organise the line, do you get a ticket like at the butchers

First para beautifully sums up my engagement with social media. I'm also more wary that its playing a key role in making the world a shittier place.

Hadn't been on FB since 2021, but returned earlier this year and what a shit-show its become. Off it again for the foreseeable. As for Twitter, two things: anything that someone like Barton can amass 1m plus lemmings can't be good, and Musk is a dangerous mofo. I look at him, Zuck, and Bezos and ask a simple question: would you have a beer with them? So no, they can eff off and not have my data whike I'm at it.

As for Bluesky and maybe its just me: but if it sounds too Chelsea; if its the colour of Chelsea; and if you think it'll be like Chelsea....you can work the rest out from there!!

Don't use them; don't need them and I suspect many of you would be better off not on it eitger!

All my regular feeds on photography, music, books etc have been swamped for some months now. Instead, I'm getting lots and lots of violence - fights, car crashes etc - hatred of every type imaginable, and - yes, lots of porn.

And, for the last week I'm getting hundred of Arsenal feeds.

Arsenal...oh, the humanity!

I'm actually reassured by this. I get loads of Palace and Chelsea content for some reason across Meta franchises.

If our tech overlords and their AI lumpenproletariat can't figure out that QPR supporters don't want that then they're not quite as frightening as I thought.

But this is being replicated across the board, and the fact is: people are clicking on things that, on the face of it, they've no prior or ongoing interest in.

It's manipulation to see what will trigger you as an Rfosi to look at something about another club abd thus, the system knows just what to do to manipulate you more than advertisingever fid in the past.

We're at the start of an era where free thinking and resulting actions are ever more susceptible to the forces of AI/AR.

Some can wrap themselves in the notion of free speech, but its not. Your data is sold so that peoples vulnerabilities can be identified, targeted, and thus influenced. In the future, it won't be so obvious if a person bought something of their own free will or guided into doing so. It's pernicious and far more intrusive and powerful than TV ads ever were, because the forces at play are linked and no more about us than is healthy.

Oh, for our humanity.

Do people really get that agitated to sometimes see an opinion that they don't agree with that they need to run off to another platform?

Seems very odd to me.

I browse on Twitter, or X or whatever you want to call it.

I browsed before Elon Musk took over, and it was mainly left wing opinions on there. People were being banned on there for saying things the left didn’t agree with.

Now Elon Musk has taken over, it’s a mixture of left leaning and right leaning opinions. The only difference I can see is that right leaning opinions are allowed now.

I’ll still be browsing.

Listen, if nothing has come from following that complete shower from W12, it is the ability to fast track to a reasonably solid sounding board that is the small oasis provided by Loftipedia.

I dont know if twitter allows you the opportunity to truly rage against that which the algorithm decides you should read, but I guess here does for those who are on twitter.

Agree with hubble.
Far less censors and censorship on Twitter now.
The threats to free speech and polarisation of opinions one of the most important issues of today, I believe. Definitely need social media to avoid MSM stranglehold on news and opinion.
Not a poster just a reader and maybe that’s why I don’t get the rubbish people are referring to.

I'm obviously biased because I regard Musk as a dangerous man child with delusions of grandeur, and have skin in the game to an extent because twitter was one online space that the left had a voice in -- compared to say YouTube which is totally dominated by the right.

But, trying to take an objective view, there is definitely something in the observation that whether you celebrate it or not, Musk has bought the platform with the stated objective of being an interventionist moderator, with an unambiguous political alignment. You can be happy about that, no worries, but it isn't credible to accuse people turned off by it of being "anti free speech" (whatever that means anyway)

I use Twitter but only on following stream as it has become a sewer for so many twisted people to spew their sickening opinions.I don’t think it carries as much influence as it’s given credit for nor does MSM as shown over in the States with most networks backing Harris. If anything I don’t like finds its way to me I just block it

The right to protect free speech (within reason) is an important one IMO, but I do believe we need to look at it in a different way than we did 20 years ago. "Offline" freedom of speech is linked with consequences - call someone a cnt, you may well get punched in the face, so there's always that system of checks and balances.

The concern with this being online is that those consequences don't exist in the same way and don't exist at all if you're taking the idea of maintaining free speech to an absolute position where there should be no restrictions. We SHOULD police this as a society but we don't.

Basically, act decently and respectfully towards others and you should be allowed to hold and express any opinion you want. But I'd argue we are moving further and further away from that as a society.

I offer no solutions, it just makes me sad that this is the direction we are all going.

As others mentioned, there's a chicken and egg problem with migrating to a new platform, if it isn't well populated it lacks appeal.

I have an account on Blue-sky from the invite that Robith of this parish kindly shared, but have rarely used it so far.

I'd definitely like to make a permanent move though. Maybe posters here could share their IDs, start a QPR presence?
