Varane’s red sets Rangers on road to Rovers ruin – Report29th Sep 2024 22:54 A stupid red card picked up in first half stoppage time by Jonathan Varane turned a stupefyingly boring Saturday breakfast game at Blackburn into a comfortable 2-0 defeat for QPR, who’ve now won only one of their first seven league games.7

We need a horrible player like Travis in our team to get in the refs face and show a bit of niggle and physicality. In fact we could do with eleven players like that. We’re way too nice as a team. Something that has been said (by you on here) for season after season.
Also if the ball touches the ref accidentally does he have to stop the game or can he play on? If the latter, then I’m surprised there’s been no mention of Pawsons decision to not play on and stop the game just we were embarking on a swift and promising counter attack a la Millwall.

Not sure about three in a row, I make that ten in a row that we’ve been the worse side on the pitch.
We’re trying to implement a system of play that we’ve found virtually impossible to play whatever midfielders we have or import and it’s been going on for years.

Great report Clive as I suspect it was the last thing you wanted to do yesterday . As my frustrations grew ever stronger during the second half I did keep catching glimpses of the 600 odd poor sods who’d travelled up there and thought “Jesus….and I’m frustrated. That’s a long way to go in such a shit hour to watch this”
I’m one of MC’s biggest fans and when I read criticism of him on here I hate it if I’m being completely honest but he isn’t beyond a little bit of criticism here . I think he has to maybe try different things now and then. His subs are consistently good when needed but when things clearly aren’t working for whatever reason, he seems hesitant to go for it . we were crying out for pace up front , just to give them something to think about . Frey did admirably but once it was time to switch maybe put Smyth through the middle or even Lloyd. Let’s try to turn them around - a situation Armstrong was made for (who missed 2 clear runs at goal again yesterday ). But it’s about taking pressure off of the midfield and back 4 and maybe stretching our opponents occasionally. Celar poses no threat at the moment when we have 11 so what’s the point? Same with Dembele. He took Sheffield Utd and Plymouth by surprise but teams since have snuffed him out so we need to try something different . But at the moment it’s rinse and repeat .
Anyway I’m rambling. Chair on the bench tomorrow I think . Might kick a few up the arse but it’s a little deflating that we are now back to where we have been for the last 2 or 3 years - relying on Ilias to produce something as others seem unable

On the nail Clive. I feel for Frey he is doing a sterling job up front without any support. I would put Lloyd alongside him and see if they can open it up a bit. I think we have a real prospect in Alfie Lloyd, he has pace, is strong and needs to be given an opportunity to see if they can forge something. For me at the moment jury is out on Celar, not sure if it is a confidence thing, settling into English football or he is just not up to it.

And yet when Colback does do that everyone goes mental.

If his “goal” stood this would somewhat soften this view I’d say
However, his detractors would point to we should’ve had a draw then as he’d missed an earlier nailed on chance.
I’d still have him in the team ahead of limp dicks like Madsen and Anderson at the moment
Just my view…..
I don't disagree - he's consistently challenging and good to watch and, if he had a final ball/delivery/shot which met his effort he wouldn't be here. It's just frustrating watching him when the hope of the final ball is more than the expectation.
And you're right about the disallowed 'goal' it was a duff decision as Clive mentioned.

One of the problems we've got atm is he's never available. He's a liability card wise but he makes a difference to us in that midfield.
If he could just cut out the cards for petulance, I'm sure most of us could put up with those for bad tackles. He would certainly have a lot less cards and better availability.

In fairness Marti said he was planning to make some changes at half time when the disastrous red card happened. 0-0 would have been a decent platform to set us up in the second half when we are usually better anyway.

I think Colback may have just been un lucky to get two cards in quick succession for talking to the ref considering that other teams have players who are constantly in the refs ear. Of course we’ll never know what he actually said but a seasoned pro like Colback should know where the line is.

First one maybe, second one he ran 40 yards to scream at the fourth official I think that's on him.

yeah agree: look, this 'seasoned pro' stuff just does not apply to Colback. Have a look through every single season in his career: he started his career as a kid getting booked all the time, it's never improved, and it still hasn't when he's only got a year or two left. He can't or won't learn what the line is or where the line is. If he hasn't by now, he never will.
Bare bones.

Been critical of him myself a fair bit but really hope he is available tomorrow

Thanks for that report, spot on. Watching that from behind my sofa was a chastening enough experience, so slogging all the way up there...man alive, brutal. Hats off to everyone who went.
We don't produce many decent chances and we're not clinical, which is a worrying combination. We desperately need one of our other forward players to start scoring a few goals, the currently excellent Frey can't carry the team.
It wasn't the biggest issue but Andersen disappointed me again. He gave the ball away with a terrible pass and then, near the end, when he went on a great run which took him to the edge of their box, he opted not to shoot when the clock and the scoreline really meant he needed to let fly.
Sigh, it's never easy, is it?
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

I do not want Colback to change.....we got enough passive midfielders who show very little or no aggression (& much, much more). If fit MC will pick him and quite rightly so, I would want him next to me if I was playing in the Team or was the Manager.
I find it very wrong that Varane gets a red and then many posters want to talk about 'Ginger'.....its a shame because he is our best overall midfielder - the team and we miss him when he doesn't play. Sadly many posters have never played the game to any level so do not understand the importance of Colback to 'this' team.,, they just want to look at his negitievs and, of course, he has negatives and why he is playing for us.
Hope he is fit for the Hull game.....it will give us a much better chance of winning the game.

The “red mist” hangs around Colback like a bad smell and always will. He is unable to control his anger or temper during games when the Adrenalin is flowing. It’s his nature and he/we will have to live with it as no amount of yellow cards or suspensions will ever change who he is.

After spending two weekends watching Bannon then Travis against us it’s massively obvious what our problem is - our centre midfield never show for the ball, ever, or if they do they pass it backwards.
Field is no doubt an excellent defender, but non existent going forwards. Varane looked like he’d been watching Dozzell videos. Colback sort of does it sometimes, then gets sent off and misses three games. Presumably we bought Madsen to help with this but he’s more like Stuart Wardley, totally anonymous the whole game then chips in with the odd goal
We’ve been crying out for someone in the super Ray mold for years now, someone who can find space and drive forward from midfield. I reckon we’d be better off playing Dembele in deep midfield and seeing what happens, at least his first reaction is to turn and doesn’t get knocked off the ball easily
Don’t think I can bear another game watching our centre mids pointing at Cook to pass it wide and hiding.
Chair papers over the cracks and we really need him back
