But he's got no feel for the game he referees at all, so he thinks that's somehow our advantage.

Agreed and yesterday was one of Ward's better ones.😁

I think JCS went first, and did so because he was wrong side, clear advantage gained illegally. I'd have been screaming for it.

No the Plymouth player had a hold of his shirt first: it’s clear when you re-watch the game on Sky.
Risky from JCS though but correct decision.

He’s a strange one.

Did get the major calls correct and wise on the diving, one day it might actually occur to Smyth that staying on his feet might actually improve his game.

It was the free kicks that did my head in. Delays every single one until every player is in his perceived correct position like chess pieces, obsessed with what’s going on before the kicks taken, if they’re fouling then just blow your bloody whistle if it’s still going on after the kicks taken. Think the four minutes that were added could have been doubled if his fannying about was included.

possibly but they were both doing it and thought it would have been a harsh penalty

I thought he was OK. Seemed well up with the game and was managing it well. Only real gripe would be the 4 minutes of injury time. Should have been at leat 6 for all the stoppages (red card, fouls, falling to the floor etc etc)

they said on tv after ( I was sad enough to re watch it last night) that refs are told if both players are pulling shirts then it's not a penalty or a foul the other way which was the case with that one, they got it right mainly as the lino could see their guy had hold of JCS shirt which Gavin Ward wouldn't have seen from his angle

So how come he gave a foul against Frey in the 2nd half when the Plymouth player was trying to swap shorts with Frey?Inconsistent as ever and we all knew that the only card for time wasting would appear in the last minute.

I would've been too. But watching from all angles now on the Sky Championship Goals highlights, the Plymouth player clearly pulls him back first and has a big fist of shirt all the way through. At the time thought we'd got very lucky. Seeing it again now, it's definitely not a penalty.

Bare bones.

I still think it is.

And I cannot believe somebody has sat in a room this summer and said "right what we're going to do this year is delay every free kick and corner by a minute while the referee arbitrarily picks two people out of the crowd for a chat, but then as soon as it's kicked you can essentially do whatever you like as long as it's mutual."

You're telling defenders and strikers they can just hold each other with complete impunity.

It's a farce. And that decision yesterday will be the first in a catalogue, for and against, this season.

It just blows my mind.

He was ok and got all the big calls right, far, far worse ref’s than Ward. Let the game flow fairly well also.

I mean on that, I can't actually imagine what it is the referee is saying there - "don't do that or I'll give a penalty"?

The answer surely is, stand back let the set piece be taken, and if a foul is committed, give a pen. Why have simple "rules" got to be so unnecessarily complicated?

On your earlier point about Mr Ward's, how should we describe it?....confusion, over whether to book Cissoko or Gyabi. I said it yesterday on the 4 minute thread, that was really beyond appalling, and he ought to be brought to account for that alone.

I don't think I've ever been to a game where QPR got every 50/50 decision.

Forshaw can't have any complaints with his two bookings, dumb from him. But for the first one he played "advantage" to us when Plymouth had the ball back. two minutes later Whittaker got away from Paal on the other side, got pulled back, exactly the same, and Paal got a warning. Good for us, but you cannot be that inconsistent - same decision within a few minutes of each other and you give a card for one and not the other.

He also, five before half time, went to book the wrong black guy with dreadlocks. Gyabi committed the foul, Cissoko was nowhere near it. The players had to go together and tell him what he was about to do. That's... unfortunate.

I think it's a penalty to them near the end as well. JCS is the wrong side of his man, knows it, grabs his shirt down by his stomach and yanks him back, at which point he reaches over and pulls him back. Ward thought it was a penalty too, went to put the whistle in his mouth and then allowed himself to be overruled by the linesman, but Ward's 6-7 yards away looking right at it and the lino is over the other side looking through a crowd.

4 minutes added to that second half was hilarious.

I had very similar take. Think Forshaw got the yellow for unsporting behaviour due to the number of pulls - can’t be booked for stopping an attack anymore once advantage is played. The penalty at the time I thought was stonewall as JCS swung him round by the shirt, Ward defo giving it until lino told him no. But as others said, from Lino’s angle looks like JCS grabbed first and I agree.
The 4 minutes was absolutely scandalous!!
I do think his lack of feel for the game and communication skills or lack is of often what leads to these tetchy games - Varane booking prime example of how not to manage a football match.

I mean, it just isn't. The reason JCS is caught 'flat-footed' as you say is that the forward used his shirt as leverage to get past him. I'll give you this: had it been given, I wouldn't have had a lot of complaints, even having seen the replay. But as it is, it was the correct decision.

Bare bones.

Fairly standard Ward performance. But the skinhead Weasley running the line in front of the Stanley stand was absolutely awful.

As much as I’d prefer to slate him as he’s usually rubbish, I thought he had a really good game. Not just ‘ok’ but much better. He got almost everything right , didn’t blow just because someone fell over (including the ridiculous Smyth) and let the game flow nicely.

I've noticed how that Gyabi/Cissoko incident has basically been ignored and brushed over in all of the assessments of his performance.

Watch it back on the Sky replay, Gyabi actually laughs and his team mates tell him he's got to go over and tell him.

It's a good job he did because otherwise, as I say in the report, that is a very uncomfortable exchange of emails between the PGMOL, EFl and Plymouth about what happens to that yellow card.

Incapable.

Thought this happened at the game but wasn’t 100% sure. Saw it bank on tv today - very embarrassing and easy to avoid

To be fair, the ref was focused on the welfare of the injured player rather than finding the guilty party.

So bad re the mix up with the booking re two black men with dreds !!

We got the better of the decisions but we had plenty go against us too.

Was more about the refs sheer incompetence tbf !!!

Surely there are many better referees around !!!

I guess I was just in that hangover haze because nobody has mentioned it anywhere since but what about the pull back/wrestling match the defender did on Frey it looked as bad as our one by JCS.
Somebody mentioned this week that we never get PKs and so far this season we had a couple of massive shouts and nothing .

I think you’re letting your dislike of the referee cloud your judgement. First & foremost he has a duty of care towards the players, that’s what he was prioritising.

I think it's actually my dislike of just how much time we spend/waste in the modern game with this performative bullsht.

Player hits the ground. You know he's okay, I know he's okay, referee knows he's okay, everybody in the ground knows he's okay. He's trying to win a free kick for his team, he's trying to get an opponent punished. Nothing more. But OH GOD, duty of care. Player safety is paramount. So we go through this rigmarole of stopping the game, summoning the physio, giving his head a bit of a rub, making him trot over to the touchline and then, lo and behold, Christmas miracle, as soon as play starts he comes sprinting back on. Everybody present knows exactly what's going on, and yet we collude in this illusion together and if you dare say "this is bolox really, isn't it?" you get pointy finger and ooooh but what if he'd fractured his skull.

Same thing with every set piece. We're going through this performative nonsense now before every corner where the referee delays, picks two players out, chats to them, corner gets taken, they do what they were going to do anyway, referee does fck all about it (unless it's Tim Robinson in which case it's immediately a free kick to the defending team regardless of what happened) and we all get on with our lives. Any point in the warning? Any substance to the chat? Any reason those two were picked out and not another two? None whatsoever. But, again, we all collude in the illusion that this is fine and necessary.

Twice on Saturday a Plymouth player just sat down, in the middle of the pitch. Ward trots over, we have a word, trainer is summoned, run off to the side of the pitch, straight back on. Nothing wrong with any of them, everybody knows what's going on and why, and yet we go through this performative bolox.

Modern football is crap #356 in the series.
