Single file queing in pubs 12:28 - Aug 15 with 6557 viewswelwynranger

Seems to be becoming a trend.
Even outside the door in some cases.
What does everyone think about this?

A lot longer than 2 to 300 years back mate !
There's a pub I used to go to in Suffolk that didn't have a ladies toilet until about 1983.

ah the good old 1970's Glasgow, piss on the urinal shaped exteriors of the pubs.

Neither using an app or going to the bar is a perfect solution. I personally prefer going to the bar as there is often more choice.

Single file queue's in a pub on the other hand are a nonsense.

thats what it comes down to personal preference so if some pubs encourage single file queues as it helps the bar staff I'm not sure what the problem is, you'll still get served. I prefer to avoid queues altogether but if the only option is to stand at the bar and hope the barmaids comes to you next then thats absolutely fine by me same as if I have to stand behind a few people and wait my turn

Yeah this is the bizarre behaviour I saw from that woman in front of me at Starbucks.

She was clearly conflicted between standing in the empty queue (where I guess she thought she might ignored or something) and the other one where the other people were DEFINITELY going to get served. She was swithering between the two options when I walked up and suggested she might commit to one or the other. She went to the the queue where people were "definitely" going to get served.

Until I joined the empty queue and she got pissed off.

Not the sharpest tool in the box.....

Mightn’t she have been thinking one queue for two tills was the best and fairest way to operate at the current level of busyness?

I've no idea what she was thinking.

But if Starbucks have 2 tills and they have 2 servers and they therefore want you to organise yourselves in 2 queues then why not just follow the system?

If I'd done what I presume she wanted me to do and stand behind her, I'd have been 4th in line for one till whilst anyone could have just walked straight up to the other one.

It's not rocket science; if there are 4 people they'd clearly rather you organise yourself in 2 queues with 2 people in each queue.

Half of the Americans I know over here think Brits love a good queue and assume that this has been standard behaviour for decades. The irony being that the mass free for all at the bar is really a very British thing and a completely alien concept to here where for the most part you're waiting on table service

Edit: or sitting at the bar. Which makes queueing an even weirder proposition as you're trying to get the barman's attention around a bunch of people sitting down eating their dinner.

I have never been in a battle where they operate a single file queuing system

If you ask me what my reaction will be if I ever happen across such a thing the my answer would be in the style of Clubber Laing
“Pain”

Absolutely bollox to that shizen, gimme a mass throng at the bar everyday
Sign of a top boozer was bar staff serving three people at one time, many a Paddy landlord had that art form well honed in my younger years

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Sitting or indeed standing at the bar drinking seems to have nearly died out.
One of my fav country songs is “I'm the king of barstool mountain “

I gather you don't frequent many bars in the United States then? Because I do and propping oneself up at and catching the 'barkeeps/tenders' eye is pretty much the same as any British Pub...though the power of tipping talks.

Like most things it’s not a one size fits all, this idea of these mass disordered queues self regulating with chaps politely waiting their turn is not the reality I see much, women in the main dislike it and is a big reason why I instead of my Mrs will head to the bar.
