Abdulai played there to good affect in the second half against Rio after swapping sides with Eom but as you say Ayling is no mug but at times Abdulai was crying out for the pass inside but no-one seemed to be available which for me is a big flaw in how we are playing/setup players not arriving from the midfield offering options to move forwards on the ball, support is a two yard passe to the full backs which can be easily defended against and ends up with us going backwards.

Abdullai showed his inexperience on Saturday, there were a few times when franco got the ball in a good position and Abdullai didn't make a rum, I put it down to three things, his inexperience, they haven't played together much and aylings experience. Abdullai is a raw player with talent who is only going to get better.

This was a problem last season too. We got away with it to an extent with Ronald beating defenders and creating gaps for himself when an easier pass should have been on. I think with Ronald and Eom available, Abdulai should get a chance in the centre. He’s got the athleticism and it looks like he reads play well enough to offer that easy ball.

Do you trust Williamsball ? on 10:29 - Aug 12 by GVJack | But we are seeing new players being signed on 4 year contracts. That should provide some stability for 2+ seasons as a minimum? 1 loan in so far (if rumors are true) so there's an improvement there also. I suspect we'll get at least one more loan in, but if we can compliment that with 2 additional long term permanent signings (players that Williams wants and are better than those in our current starting XI) then I'm optimistic that we can fight it out in the top half of the table this year. |
The only problem with 4 year contracts, is whatever the club, the player is normally there long after the manager ha gone. For this to work we must have a system/style that we maintain whoever the manager is. Otherwise we will have players we need to offload everytime we change the manager, some still on long contracts. Don't get me wrong, I agree with the 4 year contracts but we need to plan for the future better than we have in the past.

Haven't seen him in his natural position but agree I think there is a future for him and that future is close at hand, think him and Franco have a future together, having said that I do like Cooper as well think he is a valuable member of the squad but every good player can look bad at times especially if the teams tempo is poor.

Spot on re cooper, he isnt a great technical player, he thrives on quick football as you say, he's better making runs into space in between the middle and the defence, the runs that older defenders hate.

Do you trust Williamsball ? on 18:33 - Aug 11 by Tomsyard | I agree and I suppose should wait until the window closes but the team hasn’t got dynamism or athleticism or strength so the performance is often stodgy and tedious to watch because of that. Defenders don’t want to be turned and run behind but we haven’t got the players who can do that anyway so the game is constantly played in front of them which makes their lives much easier. Grimes and the defenders look for movement ahead of them when they have the ball but it’s so limited the ball has to go either square or knocked long losing momentum and the ball. The manager has to look at the tactics he employs to overcome this but I’m not confident he has that deep level of knowledge to be able get round these problems. Having a playing philosophy is all well and good if you’ve got the players to play it, if not he has to adapt but can he. |
To emphasise the point I was making about running beyond defenders has anybody seen Burnley’s first goal. I just don’t feel confident we can score goals like that but the windows still open…. [Post edited 12 Aug 20:47]

Don't rate Cooper at all after having high hopes for him when he first appeared in the squad a few years back.

You mean the player who has supported Piroe, covered for Manning runs forward, fitted in at right wing and this season in friendlies earned to penalties and as Franco tried fitted in comfortably to see us go on to a comfortable win as previously stated not the most technically gifted player but he been pulled around to fit other players in a d yet seemed to be part of winning teams so at times he must be doing something right he offers runs and energy levels that others lack. He does lack quality maybe trying to hard got caught with the ball in one of the friendlies that lead to a goal but how many players have you seen do the same when playing so deep. No Ollie Cooper has his limitations and hasn't progressed as hoped but has been used as a general dogs body which teams need to let more skillful players shine. Given the state of the squad needed until he improves. Similar in many respects to Fulton we have them until someone better comes along but even now would not be in everybody's first choice eleven.

Both fulton and cooper along with cullen shouldn't be anywhere near the starting 11, the reason 2 of the 3 are is because we have a small squad, couple that with injuries to players who would probably be ahead of all 3. I just hope that we get at least a couple in this week and the injured players start returning to action soon. I for one, unlike the PL fans on here, am not expecting much in the next few weeks.

Agree the squad is thin and we have a number of players to come back from injury but even some of those while showing promise are not proven at this level. Just hope they are given a chance to develop and not dropped because an youthful errors and inexperience as some seem to have been in the past by managers who wanted quick fixes. Would we have got to the playoffs if Steve Cooper hadn't had faith in Guehi after his errors while trying to fit in to the team when he first arrived. Players need to stand up and prove to the managers that they are good enough and let their preformance in the first team but that can be hard to do if they are not allowed a chance to rectify their mistakes especially in a team that is full of mistakes.

Do you trust Williamsball ? on 12:21 - Aug 13 with 870 views | Dr_Winston | It's long been a tradition in these parts to write Fulton off. It's been happening almost since he got here. The Truth is that he's a more than capable DM in this division. Sometimes he can even provide a reasonable goal threat. Paired alongside a consistently aggressive CM it's highly unlikely they we'd be having serious conversations about his ability. The problem is that he's rarely paired with a consistently aggressive CM. By no measure is he as out of his depth as Cullen, as unfortunately as Cooper is becoming.
| Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back. |

Thought that if Fulton had been picked alongside Downes and Grimes when Martin had just arrived the midfield would have been quite solid and have good movement forward the type which Steve Cooper craved instead of Hourihane but alas Martin didn't pick him for what ever reason and he was exiled. Did the club try and force Fultin out because of his wages or just Martin didn't want to be seen to be copying S.Cooper with his players, Bidewell didn't last long at the club with Martin.Wages or ego eventually Fulton returned under Martin.

Do you trust Williamsball ? on 07:07 - Aug 12 by scruffyjack | With the amount of service our strikers get it’s no surprise that we struggle to score goals. Saturday we started with three defensive central midfielders with little or no options to make any significant difference. Crosses coming in from both sides were bread and butter to the Boro defence as the bulk of the time we had one man in the box, with no late runners coming in. Still, only one game gone, and we’ll see how Vipotnik gets on in this lineup, but as things stand I wouldn’t expect any miracles. |

It seems two games in we are not prepared to give him time.....after Saturday the talk wasnof passes going astray.....last night too many passes. Lets consider the situation....new players Ronald rexovering from a pre season injury....Abdulai playing out of position to give us some pace out wide. Having lost at Boro im sure Lukes priority was to not loae last night helping build the sides confidence hopefully leading to a win this Saturday before the derby game which Luke is very mindful of as many of our supportes care more about thise 2 games results than the other 44 of the season. It does mystify me why he persists with the Fulton Grimes partnership but im hopeful this will change soon with Franco and either Abdulai or Cooper in front of Grimes.
