This is a good point which gets missed by the 'just delete it then' argument.

I had a conversation with Les Ferdinand after an interview with him where I said I thought footballers with social media were mad, I wouldn't go within 1000 feet of it if I was them, and they should just delete it.

He said he agreed, hates social media, doesn't use it himself, but...

He then said, 'if I told you to delete your WhatsApp, what would you say?' Now, as a 39-year-old bloke my life basically revolves around bloody WhatsApp. I've got two groups of QPR fans on there, all ticket and train booking is done through it and pub meets. I've got one for my team at work, and a broader company one. I've got one for my family, and one with my partner's family. I've got one for my Monday night football and another for my Wednesday team. Every new bloody wedding, birthday, day out gets a new group. If I were to delete it things would be logistically very different.

Les then points out these young lads aren't on Snap, Insta or whatever it is just to post video of their mega trix and "we go again" posts after we lose, it's how they communicate - with their friends, team mates, family.

They should be entitled to do that without some horrid little cnt sliding into their DMs with vile sht like this.

Les makes the point they only use the phone to communicate with friends, well if they only used Whatsapp they wouldn't have a problem it's end to end encrypted, that stops other people from accessing your data.

Surely the problem is they all go on Facebook and X because their friends use those platforms and that's where the trolls are hiding, as Nix correctly points out its very much a generational thing and the players join those platforms because their friends use them, it's very much FOMO for them.

Now I'm an old fogey I've never used Facebook or X and have no desire to use them, that said I absolutely love my Smart phone and like you would be lost without Whatsapp or a similar end to end encrypted messaging platform.....

If the players want to steer clear of the garbage it's in their own hands but I can remember back to my teens and twenties and I'm sure I would end up being in the I don't want to miss out on what my friends were doing gang.

Well yeh it's exactly that. If I said I'm ditching WhatsApp and using Telegram or something like it instead I'd be pretty bloody lonely because none of my friends or colleagues use it. You go where your peers are. My mum and her mates still SMS each other.

My son has just taken part in an "experiment" to see how he gets on with no smart phone for a month. It's being published in the weeks Sunday Times and is cover story in the colour supplement. For him and us, the biggest issue was no access to what's app. As Clive mentions all various arrangements are through it so if he's not connected then he misses stuff. Also most school work is now issued via Google classroom so he needed special dispensation to have homework emailed to us. Anyway he's not much of social media user so that was not a big issue. So players going on tiktoc, X, Facebook and Instagram with a public account do open themselves up to hideous trolls but you can keep those platforms private or not use them. No huge loss really.

I'll be sure to read this mate.
I'd be interested to know across the group if/how it affected their sleep.
I'm a terrible sleeper, wake up multiple times a night, sometimes never get back off and have to get up at 3am and do stuff, multiple regular and recurring nightmares.

After lockdown lifted I went travelling round Greece for a month and forced myself for that month to do nothing - no social media, no LFW, no lap top, no phone. I would turn it on and catch up with whatsapp messages on the days I was changing islands on the ferry, then turn it off again.

I found by the end of the month that I was sleeping straight through, and the night terrors had stopped.

It was quite alarming really.

Since I've come back I've brought a few things in like my phone goes to sleep after 7pm so I don't get alerts, I don't look at it in the hour before I'm going to bed, and I go to bed with a book for half an hour before sleep. All of which has helped a bit, but not as much as just getting rid of the fcking thing for a month altogether.

One thing about footballers and social media is if they don't have public facing accounts then you sure as hell can virtually guarantee some no-mark will create a fake one for them instead to fill the vacuum and post god knows what crap that can then ruin their reputation by pretending its actually them.

I mean quite why people go around on the internet pretending to be a public figure is beyond me but...weird world.

My boys (early 20s) use WhatsApp and SMS only to keep in contact with me and other ancient rellys. If I suggested they use it with their mates they'd direct me to the care home.

Suggesting FB would be like someone suggesting to me I get on Friends Reunited and My Space (I don't even know if they still exist but you get my point).

No chance

I think we’re fcukd
The extremists on all sides are winning because as a species we are so reactionary and easily manipulated

It’s like we’ve gone back to medieval times with modern day witchcraft baying mobs on all sides

Yeah we're done as a species.

I know this will go down like a lead balloon, especially two days before the start of the season, but for me it's alcohol that kills sleep.

Waking up at around 3am and not being able to go back to sleep is standard for me after a drink, of any amount, and usually the night after that if I had more than a few. I'm lucky that I sleep well when I'm sober, so the contrast is very sharp.

I'll sometimes have broken sober sleep if I get a call of nature in the night and go back to bed thinking about work. However, for me alcohol is the absolute killer and it can take me days to sleep well after a big session.

I'm actually the other way. Weekend when I've been on it at QPR or whatever isn't a problem, it's during the week when I'm sober.

Funny, with me it's the exact opposite.
The last time I went without a drink (I think it was July 1986), I couldn't sleep at all.
As the old country song goes “ my drinking days are over. (and over and over again).

Luckily though, because we're so massive, there are other QPR message boards you can use if this one's so terrible.

Here they are, I'm sure they'd be delighted...

That's some weird logic, fella. You're unnecessarily overcomplicating matters and getting yourself into a twist on a topic you evidently know little about (and by your own reasoning, aren't qualified to speak on).

It's really quite simple. The lad was born in England but is of Algerian descent. Much like the vast majority of Algerians, he is Arab and their language is Arabic. Not everything is simply black or white. I should know; I have more races than Nascar.

That all being said, racism of any form is deplorable and those responsible for the abuse should face the appropriate consequences.

This is the part I'm struggling with a bit. If he was born in London, doesn't that make him English by our usual standard? We all know representing England in football is about as English as its possible to be. All I can say is that generations of my family fought in wars or whatever. Great Uncle John in Crimea 1854 still fighting on horseback with swords. Who cares. Irrelevant to today's conversation. Fine.

So considering Rayan is as English as any of us - and we all accept that - Is it even possible for him to be racially abused? I genuinely had no idea he was anything other than White & English?

I don't see how topics like this are amusing.

I think to have that post from Dorse on the first page and then keep trolling the thread because you find it amusing is really poor.

I'm sick of it now after the last couple of months. Please stop or I'll delete your account.
