Bienvenue mes amis!

Will be glued to the screen for the next few weeks, watching anything and everything. The Olympics are my favourite sporting event ever since I got hooked on the 1972 games.

Arrived in Paris yesterday. Amazing to see so many French people smiling, being polite, and offering service without the Gallic shrug of indifference!

I know Derby is up next week, anyone else visiting? If so, lets reserve tables at the Georges V and push on from there.

Allez les Brits!!

Edit: weather not looking good for the OC tonight.

Pidcock defending his title in MTB today. He’s an incredible rider even though he looks like a little kid on an adult’s bike.On paper the start list looks weaker but there is always a shock in the medal placings in Olympics. Fingers crossed for no mechanicals or nasty falls.

I thought Peaty was off to the frontline with the OTT and soppy build up to this race

Ignored my own advice and tuned into that love fest.

Unfortunately this is where Clare Balding takes sport. Even my wife, who loves the heart strings stuff, thought it was way OTT and had seen enough by the end of that, the Turkish Detective being the beneficiary.

I wouldn’t mind but if they’d just let us watch him swim and talk to him after as per Sharron Davies interview that would have been more than enough to give us an insight to the fella. Instead CB assumes we’re all brain dead and practically beats us to a standstill with her brand of schmaltz.

I tend to agree but I don't think Claire Balding is making the editorial decisions. She's merely the presenter. It was way over the top as was all the build up to the Euros final. That seems to be what the BBC like to do at the moment.

Even the interview immediately after the race with Sharron Davies was OTT. Was more of a trial by emotion than an interview.

On the other hand, silver for Tom Daley. Pleased for him. One of my sporting heroes.

Yeh I enjoy the diving, when I was a kid we knew Mark Shipman a bit who competed for GB at the Olympics in 2000, and a few Commonwealths. Without that link, I doubt I would have the same enthusiasm for any of it.

We've all watched Daley grow up over the years and I'm very happy to see him add an Olympic silver. Top lad.

Pidcock had a puncture before halfway and was 40 seconds behind afterwards. He managed to catch the French rider with 1.5 laps left. He used a lot of energy to get there.

The French rider retook the lead with half a lap to go. Cat and mouse ensued, but Pidcock picked him off right near the end. They nearly came together and both could’ve came down when Pidcock took the lead.

On crossing first, the crowd actually booed him.

Fúck’em. Gold for Tom Pidcock. 🥇

Fantastic television. 👍

Half watching the mountain biking. British bloke Pidcock has just beaten a French bloke to win gold, and I'm sure I heard boos as he went over the finish line in 1st place

Ah, watched the first half in my lunch break and left it with Pidcock in 3rd 35s off the lead. Thanks for the detailed summary, I'm gutted I didn't get to see it live.

Absolutely.. I'll imbibe some free base spice melange and fold space and time to jump  back to 1979 east ham and have a word with my 11 year old self to explain irish free state complexities.

Then i'll jump back to leigh on sea 2024 sharpish as i don't want to witness my younger self knocking one out over frank stapletons cossack hairspray center parting in shoot magazine and me old mans 70's illegal Scandinavian  porn stash.

Enjoy watching hairy bulgarians greco roman wrestling this afternoon.

I had the mountain bike race on my second screen at work on silent as I was on a Teams call. Unbelievable fightback from Tom and that last lap was intense. Not surprised the French were upset! But as Mr Senna once said, the moment you don't go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver.

Or racing mountain biker in this case. Won it fair and square, fortune favours the brave.

Not to excuse the booing, it was out of order, but I’ll try and add some context. Cycling crowds, especially MTB and cyclocross can be properly rowdy affairs. They are nothing like the polite track cycling events. Think 10 Stella’s deep, flares, foghorns, flags and cowbells and you are halfway there. If you ever get a chance to see one of the big races I would definitely recommend it. However the downside is lots of lagging people and pantomime responses. Tom made contact with the French rider, it was legal but from the howls Pierre and Co were clearly unhappy. Personally I think it made the win all the sweeter. Folks shouldn’t take offence though, like abusing the opposition striker or booing the ref it’s very much part of the sport.

You had me at 10 pints of Stella

Half way through our lad is standing with a bust wheel in his hand as riders storm past him. Gets on his bike around 40 seconds behind (having been first) and chases down field including the home favourite in front of home crowd. 24 years old, won 4 years ago and competed in Tour de France but had to withdraw due to Covid. Double Olympic champion. Talent and guts.

My first experience of very strong beer was at a Belgian cyclocross race. I couldn’t remember anything about the race but was told afterwards that I was dancing on a table in one of the tents to crappy euro house. I woke up in the hotel room fully dressed and covered in mud lunchtime the next day.

Spot on with all that

Cannot condone the booing but I thought there would be a stewards with that overtake - Based on your info, its like a player getting a penalty in football that never was then getting booed throughout the game.

Great race and I thought at best he would get a bronze

That’s a very good analogy. Pidcock is so strong and he’s barely 5’7” and 9 stone.Proper pocket rocket.

Why did they allow the Triathlon to be organised in the Siene if a bit of rain always had the potential to cancel it?

Bit annoying - Was really looking forward to an Alex Yee Gold this morning!!

Now they're saying "a 60% chance it goes ahead" with a 24 hour delay. And if they can't swim, then Bi-Athlon.

Shrug. What a crock of shit. Very Parisian.
