Brian Wilson

I was talking to a bloke in the pub once about Brian Wilson and I said “and, remember he writes the words AND the lyrics”
I don't think the penny dropped.

Springsteen for me.

Every time I go to see him I feel like this old man from New Jersey who grew up in the 50's is talking about me, the son of Irish immigrants who grew up in London in the 90s.

That is skill

Bryan Ferry in a league of his own for a few years in the 70s with Roxy Music - poetry to music.

Leonard Cohen also on a completely different level to most pop lyrics.

Morrisey/Marr also very strong.

Arcade Fire and Eminen also have lyrical qualities in my view.

Rbee's Jake Thackray post prompted me to put forward Tom Lehrer. If you've never heard his stuff, he's worth a Youtube search. Here's an example...

I have the Evening (wasted) with Tom Lehrer LP.
My wife was watching TV recently and I was surprised to hear Tom. It was a programme about the space race circa 1970 and some people were watching TV and Tom was on.
Never thought I'd ever see him on TV.

McCartney has to be top for me: For quality and quantity. Brian Wilson, Paul Simon, Mike McDonald, Jeff Lynne, Gary Brooker, Ian Hunter all up there too. Plenty of others from the 60's and 70's. Manfred Mann, Justin Hayward, Denny Laine, Rod Argent, Junior Campbell, Roy Wood, The Doobies, Steely Dan, Bill Withers, Jeff Beck. Those of us that remember it were blessed but for younger people the songs live on. Too many to mention. Howard Jones tops the 80's for me. After that, not much. It's all about personal taste. I wouldn't criticise anyone's choices. We like what we like.

Stranded and Country Life great albums. The first one, just called Roxy Music, is also weird and wonderful but less accessible.

Another massive writing talent not yet mentioned (unless I've missed it - in which case apologies) is Bob Dylan.

Annoying voice to many ears which is probably why he doesn't get the credit he deserves as an incredible lyricist.

So good you chose Weller twice. Been listening to his new album 66. Really like the song Nothing.

Not sure Donald Fagen would agree with Lennon.

I hesitated to include him as they are not songs in the conventional sense, but as a lyricist Marshall Mathers is right up there. IMHO Stan is as much a game changer as many more accepted holders of that acclaim.

The grass is always greener.

Geezer Butler, some of his lyrics were inspired ahead of his time. War Pigs and Spiral Archtect were genius.

Was astonished to discover he's still alive and going strong.

Stuart Murdoch is quite cool. Very cool really and well worth a mention in a topic about great songwriters where Stuart Barlow has been mentioned.

No disrespect to Stuart Barlow intended
