Just had my renewal and it has gone up 65%. No claims in the last 5 years and am hardly a boy racer. Tried Direct Line, Aviva and Admiral. Thought my age would suit Saga but they were the most expensive. Looked on comparison sites but nowhere could I get a better quote. Methinks there is a cartel developing.

I would certainly think twice about getting insured if I was a 17 year old and quoted £3-4k for an insurance policy. How are kids supposed to get started on their driving lives with those sorts of premiums?

Yeah I mean, by this point, why even bother doing a licence? Just clone a key, take a car off somebodies driveway, change the plates, then if you crash who cares? Just do a runner and nick another. Insurance? Kinda like the TV Licence fee, it only applies to the mugs still willing to pay for it, the penalty for not having it is mostly unenforced and relatively small anyway.

Seen by many as a case for forgiveness rather than permission.

I wasn’t justifying not getting car insurance but highlighting the ridiculous premiums that kids have to pay to get on the road.
Some of the stories from other posters tell of astronomical price rises in their premiums because of the actions of others, even if they haven’t had a claim for years.Maybe the insurance companies could try to help out a bit by offering 6 month policies and then reduce the premium for the next 6 months if there hasn’t been a claim. But they won’t because they like making money too much.

As for the tv licence analogy. If you don’t pay your licence fee,or the resulting fines, they will eventually put you in jail where you can watch tv for free. Some deterrent that is.

Electric cars is a big factor. One minor bump that damages the drive battery (which is basically anywhere around the bottom of the car) and the whole vehicle is a write-off. And we're all paying for it.

Do you really believe that?

I think its a couple of factors.

1). Insurance companies are greedy
2). There are millions of uninsured drivers on the road now
3). The Police don't have the bandwidth to crack down on it, and from what I've seen when they do catch a repeat offender its a small fine and points on a licence they don't even have ;D

I used to drive a car with Halogen headlamps that were £700 ea at the time.
If I'd had a crash and broke them the car would have been written off!

Insurance is a scam for the vast majority of us who never have to use it, but still pay for it

"And we're all paying for it".

*If* we are, the cost pales into insignificance when compared with the impact of fossil fuels on our world.

I got quoted double, £650 by AA, got it below £400 via confused.com but still way higher than previous.

Was told by AA it’s down to parts and materials increases and a lot of it down to the write offs of electric cars burning out and their high cost of reimbursement.

The Luton airport car park fire and total wipe out and prospective future repercussions has been factored in and don’t expect prices to come back down.

"Was told by AA it’s down to parts and materials increases and a lot of it down to the write offs of electric cars burning out".

Research produced for the Australian government indicates that electric cars are *less* likely to catch fire. Here is the summary:

"Our initial research findings, based on global EV battery fires from 2010-2020, indicate a 0.0012% of a passenger electric vehicle battery catching fire.

While it's difficult to find a similar stat for internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger vehicles globally, a range of country-based reports we found suggest there is a 0.1% chance of an ICE vehicle catching fire.

In this FAQ list, there is additional evidence from other sources to suggest EVs are less likely to catch fire than ICE cars".

One thing I would suggest when getting car insurance quotes is to look out for high excess charges. I have found that some insurers, in their quest to offer the competitive premiums, will charge a high excess. In my view, it's not worth saving, say, a tenner on your premium if you have to pay a high excess in the event of making a claim.
