The Newcastle midfielder, when in the 60s my Dad dragged me to watch him play Amateur football @ Paddington Rec, I remember a few things, Steve Perryman & Phil Holder watching Phil’s older brother Tommy playing left back wearing horn rimmed glasses held on by elastic bands! But one thing that haunts me is when a fella called Roy Simpson went up for a ball & collapsed after the challenge, reason being the chewing gum the chewing gum got lodged in his windpipe.

Phil Holder! Never saw him play apart from a few minutes on The Big Match, but he was the only professional footballer who’d ever been to my primary school (Malorees in Brondesbury Park). Mr Sparkes, who taught Maths as well as running the football team, tried to keep us focused on lessons by saying, “I know you love playing football, but none of you will be Phil Holder.” How right he was. |  | | |
