Right man. Right time? – Column 23:20 - Oct 30 with 21429 viewsNorthernr

Two 18 hour work days consecutively. Can we have a quiet one tomorrow please.

Right man. Right time? – Column 30th Oct 2023 22:25
A year later than planned, Marti Cifuentes is the new QPR manager with the Spaniard’s arrival confirmed late tonight – but this is a very different club and team to a year ago, and this is a herculean task in front an idealist coach. 20

The long work days are appreciated.

Thanks for the timely and informative piece. I definitely feel more clued up about our new gaffer, but now fully realise his appointment is a massive gamble. Let's hope it works out for us and him. Good luck Marti.

You should be the first one to interview the new boss Clive as a reward for all your excellent work these last days and over the years
I must admit to be thrilled at the choice regardless of the outcome its very refrreshing and gives the fan base a real jolt of energy
Does anybody know when the players found out GA was getting the chop Their unexpected display of resilance was good to see Saturday (except Dozzell ) but hopefully it was for Ainsworth not because he was leaving
Either way it feels like a cloud has moved away from Loftus Road lets get the new regime up and running

Great stuff again.

"Mind you, "pressing in a confusing way" is basically the only verified skill on Sinclair Armstrong's LinkedIn page". Tremendous.

That's a dick swing worth pointing out. Impressive.

An exciting appointment, but as you say, it makes the Ainsworth experiment even more batshit than it was. Will just be nice to have a manager (coach?) who sends the team out to play football, can adapt during matches and keep the opposition guessing, rather than a John Beck tribute act.

Warnock was the obvious move and if this doesn't work the fall out is going to be horrific but quite pleased to see them go back to what they were trying to do before Beale left, he's got a hell of a job on his hands but I'm quite excited about seeing what he can do

Thanks as ever both for doing the research so we don't have to, and for such a hugely entertaining piece. I LOL'd so much that Mrs NGB couldn't help but LOL with me - LFW osmosis right there.

My wishes, in order, are as follows:

He's Beale without the BS.
He's Critchley with a personality.
Willock is smitten the minute he walks in the room*
Cook senses a Catalan Eddie Howe / Steve Cooper immediately and spreads the gospel
Colback promises the naughty step will no longer be needed
Our song for him doesn't involve any Spanish stereotypes or references to Pep
We (fans and top brass alike) agree to "apoya a nuestro hombre" if relegated

(*with the caveat that Richards is equally smitten / rejuvenated, just in case the result of Willock being smitten is a January sale)

PH to Mrs. PH - Do you want to see the new manager?

Mrs. PH - If he has a haircut it's already an improvement. Is he any good?

PH - You could read the artic...

Mrs. PH - No matter if he's good or not, he's a good looking boy! Good choice. Maybe 'we' go to QPR when next back.

Not bothered about formations, possession stats, inverted FBs, or the prospect of Willock and Chair ripping teams a second one!

Top stuff Clive, was the draft saved from a year ago? I read on one of the threads we didn’t get him earlier as Hammmerby wouldn’t release him. Makes me think we have almost stuck to a plan. I do think our 1st 15 are more suited to his style. If he takes training today is that a 1st with him leading a different club in a game les than 24 hours earlier?.

Well I've never heard of him as I suspect many on here will be the same.
Massive risk the club are taking here. Start of the season I would have thought alright let's give it a go but 8 points adrift it's a big gamble to employ someone to get us out of the shit without any knowledge or experience of English football.
I really want him to do well and it will be a completely different approach to Mr Ainsworth so maybe he can get the players on board.
As I have said on another thread and I truly believe it this team are not championship contenders but are much better than the position we find ourselves in now.
Very best of luck to him, he's our manager and I will support him and his team.
The next two games are winnable so he could get off to a flyer which would improve moral no end.
Good luck Sir, keep us up.

Really glad we made this appointment. If we stay up that's a bonus, as long as we start to resemble a professional team again and start scoring some goals. Hope we don't get on his back and also back the players as we reset and rebuild. Could be a turning point and we need to be patient. C'mon U Rsss

Very interesting report Norf, a very interesting appointment. I look forward to seeing how he sets up, how he plays and who he plays but I am in positive mood. I would imagine the players are very happy for several reasons including the sacking of GA.

Thank god it was not Neil Warnock!!!!!!....never thought it would be.

Is it simplistic to say Warbs, Beale and Critch = LF. Gaz = Bhatia. Marti = Hoos (having stolen LFs homework)?

Who knows why Telegraph went hot and heavy for Neil so quickly. Maybe he really does just demand the world because he knows he’s the man for this job in this league.

Like you say, fully on board with this appointment if they’re willing to stomach relegation and start again with Marti if things take time. If we sack him in February and get NW in anyway, this really would be four year plan 2.0

Great article.

What should be an exciting and welcomed appointment, I view with an extreme amount of scepticism. The current state of the club and squad fills me with absolutely no confidence.

I appreciate that he was probably meant to come in instead of Ainsworth, but it's typical of QPR that we had to make a 'temporary' appointment that produced some of the worst football I can remember at Loftus Road. I know it's a cliche to say 'typical QPR', but that 'typical' isn't us being unlucky, it stops being 'unlucky' when it happens over and over again.

Like a lot of things in life it's about timing and experience teaches you to make decisions at the right time. QPR never learns. We're the idiot at the back of the class parroting a joke that's already out of fashion.

We're going down. There may be brief, fleeting moments of footballing brilliance that show what could have been, but in the end we'll go down because this squad doesn't have the fitness, mentality, technical ability or depth to stay up.

If Cifuentes stays beyond 2024 I will be astonished.

Thanks for the report as I, like most of us here, knew nothing about him.
He looks like the perfect appointment for 18 months ago after Warburton. How typical.

Not sure he'll keep us up, but we might string a couple of passes together. It offers a glimmer of hope though. Damn, there it is again, that damn hope......

Thanks so much Clive.

We can only hope with his more progressive brand of football, our precious players might actually be happy to play for him.

Very intrigued to see what team he puts out on Saturday.

Not helped by his central midfield being stupidly suspended.

Thanks very much, Clive - brilliant, thought-provoking, article.

"Playing and passing almost quite literally from own goal line. Expect many scary moments as you see our 36-year-old goalkeeper trying to play sweeper." Quite.

I really want to be positive - and you've detailed genuine compelling evidence - but the Warnock situation still worries me. Did we move on from him, or did he reject us as a busted flush? On this, I suspect everything depends.

As said in the piece, Warnock is negotiating from a position of strength. He's just kept Huddersfield up, he doesn't need a job, he can pick and choose the ones he likes, and if not he'll just knock around in Cornwall. He wants a budget in January and a massive bonus for keeping you up, not to mention his own contract.

I think the club would do well to try and distance themselves from this idea that it was a straight choice between Warnock and Cifuentes (I mean if you come down to those two what sort of process have you been running?) because if results don't turn immediately/at all then people are going to be wailing about not doing Warnock. Cifuentes they've wanted for more than 18 months.

There is a huge possibility we will go down but at least let’s do it playing some proper football.
He sounds like he knows what he’s doing .
This is a fourth manager in a short spell for a lot of our players.
Time for them to front up now.

Well Clive, I think that one thing we can all be proud of is having in you the finest writer in football - not only is it reasoned and rational, and at the same time tribal and emotional, it's actually the funniest thing out there. I was chuckling on the tube this morning thinking about "Dougal" Dunne and the finger puppets. Thank you!

A great article, thank you. I read a lot but do not post very often. I hesitate to ask this as I don’t want to be seen as opening up the painful FFP headroom debate again. But if I have understood correctly there is no head room this season but some next season, although we have used up some of next seasons headroom with the 2 years deals for Cook, Fox and Colback. My question is what is the punishment if we breach in January, by making some signings that are within the headroom for next season? Is the slate wiped clean in August or do the penalties run into next season? As I said not trying to question your previous analysis.

If we wanted Cifuentes for more than a year, why would Cifuentes still wanted to come after how our club imploded since beale departed right up to now?

I am sure he did his due diligence and see us as something he could work his magic with

Maybe he’s sold on the new training ground at Heston?
