Dykes 19:29 - Oct 11 with 9042 views | stainrods_elbow | Has scored four goals in a year! Four! In a year! How many (assuming we don't find him a suitor in Jan) would you back him to score this season? Five if we're lucky? Has Armstrong even scored four goals in his entire career? He can sit on the bench and just look evil for a bit. Not a starter for me right now either. Right now, I can't see we lose anything by not even playing with a false 9. Let's not play with any kind of 9, go 3-7-0, inundate the midfield, confuse the opposition/ourselves, and see what happens. Tippy tap, close-the gaps, possession-based football, and a few snap/potshots for fun as soon as we get 35 yards from goal. Now off for my lie-down and meds. Wake me up when the board's swung the axe! [Post edited 11 Oct 2023 19:29]

Dykes on 13:16 - Oct 13 by gazza1 | Well its all about opinion PRR....... Yes I 100% believe that MW bought Dykes to play him as CF and to bag a bundle of goals. He must have seen something in him to think he could make him into a goalscoring CF. Never heard anything like that he was/is a winger!!! He has zero attributes to play as a winger!!!! and think it is madness to even think that MW bought him in to play wide right winger. Initially this season I thought Dykes was our No1 CF (Not because he was any good but because we had zero others) but after watching him in the first 15 goals or so I prefer Armstrong, purely because Dykes has been very poor and at least Armstrong puts himself about and has got genuine pace and shows up for the long ball out of defence.. We have to start getting into goalscoring positions, Dykes rarely does, and when a opportunity arises you need to score, not miss 9/10. Possession is a major issue but we need to take our chances when they arrive. |
Fair enough Gazza, I'd regretfully disagree regards Armstrong's ability & potential, but for R's sake, I hope you're right and I'm wrong, Regards getting into positions, if you watch the 2minute Sky Highlights for our recent games versus Swansea, Coventry & Leeds you can see how much Dykes movement & positional sense has improved, unfortunately we just do not create enough / if any chances, Regards Dykes touch being park-level, worth a look at 2minute highlights of Scotland beating Norway 2-1 at Hampden recently, Dykes touch & control with his weaker left foot to set up the winner was sublime, almost up their with Adel's for SWP at Stamford Bridge that night, Dykes has decent hold-up play, is good in the air, has decent pace, and as can be seen from his goals back-catalogue can score some fairly spectacular goals with his head & feet, What I think we all agree on is he is not a forward who can beat his man from a standing start and score those Clive Allen types of goals, and given we have an attack made up of a 10 who never passes first time, one who seems half-fit and one prone to over-hit his crosses, we're struggling this season, unless something changes quickly.
Dykes on 16:54 - Oct 13 with 956 views | kensalriser | Is Dykes' record for Scotland really any better than with QPR? 29 goals from 122 vs 9 from 32. The Scotland sample size isn't really big enough to be statistically meaningful, plus which two of the goals have been against very inferior opposition (Moldova, Faroes), while all but one of his goals for QPR have been in the league.

Dykes on 16:36 - Oct 12 by Benny_the_Ball | That for me, is the ultimate frustration. Extremely streaky for QPR, not so streaky for Scotland. Perhaps being around better players helps but I can't help but think that he could do more. |
So far in his career, LD has scored 29 goals in 122 league appearances for QPR = 1 every 4.2 games, whereas for Scotland it's 9 in 34 caps = 1 every 3.8, so not a lot of difference. Consider, too, that not only are Scotland a stronger team than QPR just now, but their opposition is also rather more variable in quality. On which point, his goals have included strikes against Czechia, Slovakia, Austria, Israel, Ukraine(2) and Norway, who are decent, but hardly world-beaters, whilst the remaining two were against Moldova and Faroes. He has failed to score internationally against any top teams he may have faced (eg Croatia, Netherlands, Spain, sub against England etc). Conclusion? Albeit that his 34 games for Scotland may be too small a sample size, he probably doesn't play any "better" for Scotland than for QPR, it's just that the Jocks don't depend on him to score goals as much as you do. (Incidentally, Scotland aren't a very prolific side anyhow, with or without LD. For most of their victories are by a single goal, without their ever hammering other teams. In fact even their wins over Faroes and Moldova were 1-0's!) EDIT: Just seen Kensal Riser's post, above. [Post edited 13 Oct 2023 17:38]

I've watched many of the games Dykes has played for Scotland, and he does play better for them than QPR. Why? As others have said, he's got better players around him, particularly players who will often run past him, and a manager who uses his abilities more effectively.

Dykes on 08:54 - Oct 13 by slmrstid | I actually think one of the big differences in Dykes between Scotland and QPR is for Scotland they are frequently an underdog, or certainly playing in a counter-attacking manner, and Dykes isn't expected to be the main leading man providing all the goals. For QPR he is our #9 - the number 1 striker and expected to contribute lots of goals. He is not a natural goal scorer. It means for Scotland he is able to do what he is expected to do, and for QPR he is not. And I think that plays into the perceptions we have of him. |
But we are trying to play a counter attacking game. We are conceding a lot of possession at home and I don’t see Dykes doing a lot. I think defenders find him very easy to play against.
