Lionesses Match Freda - The Final on 04:46 - Aug 21 with 1218 views | SydneyRs | I was there last night. Fantastic occasion and atmosphere and a large England support in the ground. No getting away from it, we were completely outplayed by a technically superior side who were in top form on the night. This was my first "live" experience of women's football and I was hugely impressed with the skill and intensity on display. England tried to press Spain into errors but it just didn't happen. They were so comfortable on the ball and just played around us. At times we were chasing shadows. Could easily have been 3-0 or something like that. We looked tired and I do wonder if the extra day rest Spain had after the semi finals played a part. Australia looked similarly tired against Sweden in the 3rd place game after Sweden also had an extra recovery day. Overall a feeling of huge pride though. Few teams have ever, men or women, held the Euros and world cup at the same time and we were close to doing just that despite having 3 of our best players ruled out of the tournament. We took apart the host nation who were on the crest of a wave in front of a partisan crowd. Spain came the closest to knocking us out of the Euros and are a very talented team. Get the feeling we'll meet them again in important tournament games. Now we must learn from this. Technical sides can be beaten (remember they lost 4-0 to Japan in the group stage) and we need to be better against them next time we meet. The tournament was a huge success and this was partly down to ticket prices. Most expensive tickets for the final were the equivalent of 60 quid, some were a tenner. It means everyone can take their kids and once in the ground will spend their cash on merch and food etc. What's also refreshing is the women's game lacks the crowd aggression and sneering of the men's game. I absolutely cringe watching supposedly grown men doing all arms outstretched, come on then nonsense that I see in tweets regularly. Usually with only a couple of minimum wage stewards stopping them if they actually do want to throw and risk receiving a punch. The progression of the women's game has been incredible and long may it continue. Next world cup will be tougher still with the countries that are emerging. [Post edited 21 Aug 2023 4:48]

Lionesses Match Freda - The Final on 12:24 - Aug 20 by Juzzie | If that’s given as a penalty we may as well give up with football |
Took forever to make the decision. In the ground we were saying if it takes that long to decide then it shouldn't be given. You don't get to see the replays when you are in the stadium either so its just a long wait.

Watching on tv I couldn't understand why it took so long, they showed a replay straight away and you could see it hit her hand so penalty but it took 4/5 minutes to decide

The tournament was a massive success. It has done so much to promote women's football in the southern hemisphere. And that may leech into attitudes more widely. My Aussie family are heavily involved with their local team with daughter-in-law playing and being involved in all the admin. Last time I was there you could tell the women's game was set to explode.

Said the same thing to Mrs PH about the extra day's rest telling. Although I'm not sure how many of their squad Spain used, but SW likes to keep her team selection consistent and in a way, it was a shame we couldn't give a rest for the team against China, especially as our three knockout games went to the wire, which meant we did look tired. Spain were good, but they were also fast. England must try and get some speed into their ranks. Russo can finish, but she's pedestrian in terms of pace; our midfield was just bypassed at will in the first half. As for the crowds, let's not beat about the bush here, just as soon as FAs and FIFA can get those prices up, they will! The flip off this of course, until they do and until TV revenues and sponsorship monies rise, equal pay will only come if the men's game contributes in the interim. That said, it's now for women (and men) to get off their behinds and go support their sisters. Enjoyed this WC immensely, and having watched the last two WCs and last year's Euros, the women's game is definitely on the rise. Good for them! [Post edited 21 Aug 2023 10:27]

Yeah I was surprised it took so long with VAR. I noticed it hit her hand in real time, and said if it goes to VAR that'll be a pen.

Lionesses Match Freda - The Final on 15:10 - Aug 20 by bosh67 | We looked very leggy and tired today. The definition of a 'game too far'. We were outpaced and overrun by a much stronger team on the day. I thought we were slow and one paced in midfield, where the game was lost. It's very difficult for a coach, because she does the right thing bringing on the right players at half time but there was never really any authority on the ball and well, it felt like the tank was empty for some reason. James never got into the game and Chloe couldn't seem to get any real advantage down the flank. But overall they did very well. For Wiegman it was a disappointing way to bow out but she's the most fantastic coach. Her girls simply ran out of gas and Spain played with far more energy and intent. She may reflect on what Vilda did. He alienated half his team, has been criticised for not turning up for training sessions and being incredibly lazy in the build up for the tournament... and he was the winning coach. Perhaps if Wiegman was that unprofessional we would have won? But seriously, a great effort, European Champions and World Cup Finalists. They've done better than the men and I feel we will come back strongly. Well done Spain. They were excellent. I blame Brexit! |
Maybe I'd have waited ten minutes into the second half to see if anything improved - Russo pace not great but her finishing is clinical, she only needs one chance. But we were overrun in midfield (Walsh had a stinker). In the end maybe we did just run out of energy - and fair play to Spain who were excellent on the night.

Yeah it was really noticeable how quick Spain were. Their lanky forward is a great player and was giving Bright the runaround all evening. We were playing long balls for Hemp/Russo but they almost always got there first and cut them out. Their ball retention was also outstanding and every time we lost possession you feared they would cut us open. Killed us in midfield. If we'd managed to get a goal of course that might have unsettled them but we didn't and they played with a swagger for most of the game. Saw myself head in hands on TV highlights after I got home when we hit the bar early doors. You're absolutely right about the pricing too. The more popular it gets up they will go. For me seeing it live was great. Every bit as entertaining as a men's game. Despite the result it was a terrific occasion to be part of. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Lionesses Match Freda - The Final on 10:18 - Aug 21 with 854 views | themodfather | first lady england fans NOW KNOW how we feel! then for me loading our midfield with 5 limited us in the first half, at least their goal was decent and we lost not thru a hand of god or penalty miss but the ref was all over spain from the off, very chatty and let a lot go , spain went down many times, sometimes 3 of them and the ref ran over and put an arm round, neutral? still well done the lionessess, more to come from them.

Lionesses Match Freda - The Final on 22:36 - Aug 20 by daveB | Thought Russo should have done better for the goal, switched off and allowed the girl to spring past her and by the time she reacted it was too late. Overall they did far better than most expected given the injuries, got a bit fortunate with the draw opening up for them but took full advantage and runners up is nothing to be ashamed of. |
Russo had already sprinted yards to fill the space that Bronze had left because of her poor decision making. Only Bronze was to blame for that goal. And then once she'd made the mistake she just jogged back instead of trying to make up for her mistake and become an extra body to defend. For an experienced player who knows most of the Spanish team, she was very poor yesterday
