Released QPR manager wins European trophy as a first team coach year later !!! 22:55 - Jun 7 with 3669 viewsnumptydumpty

Great decision by the board and the DoF !!! 🤣

Wonder if Monsieur Warburton still has any ambitions to be number one again.

Obviously not a hope in whatever him coming here again, but am actually genuinely pleased for the man. Was a man who did pretty well here and enjoyed the style of play he brought in.

Be interesting if he does get any clubs come calling and whether he would take the bait once more.

I often wonder what on earth goes through the minds of TF, RG and AB when they reflect on the carnage they’ve created. If I were them I would be absolutely cringing with embarrassment. Not only are they incompetent, they’re putting their incompetence on show for the whole world to see. They must be a laughing stock within football. They couldn’t get a decision right if they were presented with one option and it was the right one.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing isn’t it? The results tailed off after Christmas in his last season with us,and I’m sure that a lot of our expert fans would’ve been moaning about the lack of ambition by the board if we’d renewed his contract too.
Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

Not sure how much influence Warbs has had on them but for the sake of balance they’ve had their worst League campaign for some years.

Former QPR man Ian Taylor on the pitch as well

Pleased for Warbs, he's a good man but lets not re write history too much It was a 50/50 call last summer, no one was saying i wish Warbs was still here when we were having threads comparing Beale to Venables. It hasn't worked out but it was going wrong before he left and a big part of why we are in this mess remains having a go in 2021 and failing to even make the playoffs.

Can't say everyone.

I was a big fan of Warburton and said at the time he should have the job as long as he wants it and a long term manager who fits our ethos, would have been brilliant for the club.

Never known an ovation for an outgoing manager at his last home game with us.

Think you will find there were many that did not want him to go at all.

I definitely said be careful what you wish for, at the time.

Ie no point in constantly hiring and firing.

Only went wrong that season because of long term injuries to many key players and having seven goalkeepers.

And if finishing 11th with all that is going wrong, definitely would take that.

Pleased for him and West Ham and their win last night.

Who knows where we'd be had he stayed as manager? But given his previous history he'd have fallen out with somebody at some point. Very good at managing down, not so good at managing up, so in the end perhaps not best suited to being a head coach. I'd say his current role is a much better fit for him.

The last 4/5 months under Warburton was awful. Just because this year was even worse doesn't make it golden. Remember Warburton had better players than last year and we still shipped 70+ goals each season and had to watch the devils triangle of GK and 2x CB's passing the ball amongst themselves in our penalty area whilst the opposition closed us down.

edit: was Warburton harshly treated? Yes, I would say so, however if the form had carried on into this season he would have been gone by the world cup and we would have probably never recovered.

Absolutely the hindsight campaign gathers momentum yet again, at the end of Warbs last season we were playing dire football, the ball was being passed continually within our own half, the players in the squad were not good enough to play keep ball and the fitness of several players was disappointing.

There were some good and bad transfers during Warbs tenure, whoever agreed to the Dozzell transfer needs shooting but it wouldn't surprise me if Banfield had a big influence in that decision.
The first two seasons with Warbs were much better, different selection options helped, so the club decides to back Warbs to the hilt financially, bring in 5 players to salvage the season, rewarded with excellent form and performances,so then backs him even further financially by giving him all he wants in the following Summer to mount a promotion challenge, it all goes horribly wrong and we end up trying to play keep ball with the wrong players.

So the board backed Warbs to the hilt, took a gamble knowing full well how it would impact FFP, Warbs spent the small treasure chest to go for promotion, I don't remember anybody on here saying at the time we shouldn't have given Warbs the money to sign the players but now it's all a big mistake.
In some people's eyes on here the board are always the problem, that's just not true, they rewarded Warbs for his good management by giving him the small war chest to spend, they knew it was a gamble, that's what happens at Board level, giving Austin and Johansen so much money to sign on the dotted line in hindsight was a mistake but again everybody at the time wanted them to sign.
I don't envy our owners one bit, they are trying hard to get things right, the Training ground Investment is amazing, they are relying on Sir Les to make good football decisions, very sadly it's time he moved on.

Ps ....I was in the camp where I would have given Warbs one more season to see if he could turn it around but I guess the Finances had been blown so they decided to choose a fresh start.

It was going wrong long before the injuries kicked in, even the first half of the season we were winning games but not playing well at all, that Coventry away win was daylight robbery

Losing Dieng was a massive blow and later Willock but we weren't the only side to suffer injuries and he was close to getting the boot before Willock got injured

Of course we'd take 11th now but go back to last season, Warbs himself said the aim was the playoffs, we got nowhere near in the end

Also last season was when we abandoned the financial discipline and gambled on promotion. Didn't happen, which is partly why we are where we are now. I liked him too, but I think he knew it wasn't going to work with more constraints

Was it going wrong, or was that the natural order of things? Did it go wrong for Brentford when they blew the play-offs a couple of times, or was it the natural order? He’d pulled us out of slumps before. He left us in better shape than he found us and gave us some great football in between. Surely, you look at all the cra@p we’ve had manage us since Warnock, accept that success isn’t linear, and back the manager that’s better than all the others to go again. Brentford persevered because they accepted setbacks are part and parcel of sport/life, backed the manager and are reaping the rewards. We tore it all up and crashed and burned. This will never change with idiots making decisions.

Equally, there was far more good football over the three seasons than there was side to side, selective memory 😉

Last Summer we signed loans and free transfers, admittedly the wages are not cheap but I think the loss everybody keeps reporting was from the previous seasons
signings and wages.

It has to be acknowledged that we finished nowhere near the play offs so hardly a surprise Warbs was dispensed with. Luton made the play offs the season we finished 11th so no doubt our owners felt we should have done the same injuries or no injuries to the squad. If a target is set it comes as no surprise when a manager loses his job for not reaching it whether we like it or not. When we reached top spot in October it appeared the owners were vindicated letting Warbs go...

I'm happy for Warburton.
Also really happy for Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan, Michael Antonio, Jarrod Bowen....for various strange reasons that I won't go into. Most of their squad seem like great lads, even the ex-chelsea one

However, I was incredibly annoyed to see Ian Taylor running around asif he'd just scored the winner. Thought he did cycling now. Absolute whopper.

He didn't win a trophy as a manager for us or even get us into the play-offs so I don't see the relevance of this post as it's a totally different thing to be a coach of Premier league players as opposed to managing a championship team where he never won a trophy with the Middlesex side or Florist.
I don't count his time in Scotland as my dead nan could win a trophy managing Rangers

Jeff Hendrick

Eddie Howe has told Hendrick he can do one.

But I suspect no one in the Champ will take him except maybe Sheffield Wednesday and then only on a free, as everyone can now say "but QPR had him for free".

He also has a relegation from the Cahmp on his CV. No one wants Hendrick, Hibs or Ross County beckons.

Agree,

This season has proved without Willock we lacked end product in the final third and Warburton highlighted Willock's injury as a key factor in his recent podcast, having seen most if not all of that seasons run-in games live, that's exactly what I saw,

Warburton's only mistake was gambling all on two senior pro's who lets just say did'nt have the professionalism or decency of a Marc Pugh type character,

Andre Gray and not using Academy players to fill the bench alledgedly led to a rift with our Head of Marketing and ultimately we lost a Manager who was a perfect fit long-term fit for QPR, although a little like Brexit, very rare for LfW posters to hold their hands up and admit they called that one wrong.

Beale I thought at the time did have something Warburton lacked, a contact book of young Premier League players who were unlikely to make the grade and could be picked up relatively cheap, hopefully being long-term replacements for the likes of Wallace, Adomah etc

Unfortunately as we have now learnt and Roberts, Clarke Salter and Luton Town have proved, you are far better scouting the lower leagues and picking up robust players who have the necessary desire to play Championship football week-in week-out, than early 20 something ex-Premier League squad players, who've possible already enough money in their career to lose their desire.

We'll never know how it would have gone.. There was a real risk of it continuing into the next season, a bit like Ainsworth at the moment he looked an obvious sacked by christmas candidate at the time
There was obviously more to it than just results, he'd fallen out with the DOF and the owners so was never likely to survive a collapse like we had.

I think they did try and continue with the same plan rather than tear it up all just used a different voice as manager but Beale going set the place on the fire.

I do wonder if thats part of why les and also Ainsworth are staying in that the owners saw what happened when they pulled the trigger last year and now want to stick and see if it gets better. Thats probably being a bit generous towards them though

Dave, surely Ainsworth is staying as he still has three years on his contract, he kept us in the division and he deserves a chance, to do whatever was agreed as targets in the negotiations.

Think we need a fresh start at DOF, and maybe CEO, level though. The plan hasn't succeeded and we need someone to implement the 'new plan'.
