I can still see mi old nan slurping and gnawing away at what looked like some of the aftermath of a 155mm howitzer shell blast on the Somme.
I like the liquer on my pies and mash though.
Edit: Just started re-reading 'the fabled coast' a book on British and Irish traditions and legends and apparently fossilised oysters were known as 'The Devils toenails' and used as a remedy against arthritis (doesn't say how I guess crushed powdered and drunk with something).
