I returned from a short break in Crete in the small hours of Sunday morning. We had two glorious days, 2 cloudy but warm days and just 1 wash out.

Really jealous of anyone going to Sicily. We went there last October for my 60th and had a wonderful time. Taormina is a beautiful town and spent my birthday going up Etna. Perfect. I would go back at the drop of a hat.

Crete is wonderful in the last week of April or first week of May. The weather is usually warm and sunny, there are wildflowers everywhere and there is still snow on the tops of the mountains.

We love the south coast, it's cheap to stay and eat out there plus it's quieter and more authentic than the north, with far fewer tourists. We've stayed in Agia Galini, Matala, Mirtos and Plakias and all were good.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

The Clive Myrie series recently on BBC 2 about Italy was very good, imo.

We'd not been to Crete before. We were on the north coast in Agia Pelagia. I wouldn't go back to there again as it was a little remote, but it did have a bus to Heraklion 5 times a day. The hotel was nice and the staff were excellent.

I was surprised at how green the landscape was, but it is still early in the year.

I didn't watch it, but may catch up on the I-Player

Has anyone been to Civita di Bagnoregio? Is it as good as it looks?

I watched a bit of It but It's not that great just my opinion really.

We went and stayed Ten Years on the trot to a remote place up a bit of a mountain a couple of miles outside of Assisi In Umbria, a stunningly gorgeous and peacefull part of Italy, hated coming home. I/we love Italy and the lifestyle but not the Cities.

We stayed at the Sani Beach, Halkidiki Greece a few times lovelly hotel but a bit expensive.

@ Loftboy,

We've been to a few different places In Greece over the years however the first time we went was years and years ago and we went via Rhodes airport, on the way back home the departure part of the airport was a chaotic and without exaggeration bloody filthy disorganised mess, on eventually getting on the plane we vowed never to come back and we haven't well not to Rhodes anyway.
Like I say It was many Years ago so I can't Imagine It's still like that now?

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The airport is a lot better these days Ted, we stay in a small village in the north called Pastida, lovely family run hotel, most of the guests return year after year, the hotspots like Faliraki have been clamped down on by the police and it is now a family orientated resort.
The beaches along the east coast are some of the best I’ve been to.
It’s a big world out there so this year will probably be our last visit for a while as we want to see so much more of the planet.

Edited as I used the word world far too often!!

I watched a couple yesterday evening. I think that Clive Myrie is trying too hard to distance himself from his day job; it doesn't look natural. The scenery is stunning though.

Heraklion airport was pretty shambolic too. We were scheduled to fly out at 23:30. It was inevitable that a flight at that time was going to be delayed so I've no problem with that. What was poor was they told us to board before the plane was ready. We were all moved into an outside holding pen in full view of the runway and stood there for at least half an hour before the first bus turned up to take us to the aeroplane. I was amazed how many toddlers there were flying at that time of night, all of them beyond tired. As soon as one started to cry, they all joined in! The second bus arrived to pick up the next tranche of passengers around 10 minutes after the first, didn't open his doors and then drove off empty! It took another 10 minutes for the next bus to arrive to a very sarcastic cheer and round of applause. Thankfully, the third was pretty prompt behind it. All pretty woeful and avoidable.

Sunset in Crete was far more appealing than sunrise at Gatwick.
