speedway on 21:09 - Apr 29 with 2004 views | dixiedean | Me too Steve . Used to go to Wembley in the days of Reidar Eide , Dave Jessup, Bert Harkins . When the Lions folded I went to Wimbledon. Isn’t the new Dons FC ground built on the old speedway/ greyhound stadium?

Yes plough lane was called the excitement centre! Used to be greyhound racing stock car and speedway same as white city in the 70s
speedway on 21:21 - Apr 29 with 1985 views | QPRSteve | So many tracks have disappeared. I'm in Cardiff theses days and my nearest track at Newport folded just as I arrived. I wonder what the nearest track to London id there's days?

Don't forget Sverre Hartfeldt our super reserve.
speedway on 17:34 - Apr 30 with 1826 views | dixiedean | Blimey there’s a name I’d forgotten! I’m amazed many tracks survive these days- very low crowds and minimal tv revenue but we seem to be producing some good young riders to compete with the Poles. Amazing that NZ have none after the quality of Mauger , Moore and Briggs.
speedway on 18:34 - Apr 30 with 1789 views | Rs_Holy | used to go to Wimbledon in the 70's but to be honest the bits and pieces i see on tv now look really boring... almost on a par with F1

Not sure if they’ve started at Oxford again. The greyhounds are back there

speedway on 08:49 - May 1 with 1573 views | cyprusmel | I have been to Wembley a few times when they used to ride there, didn't like it, It's not for me. My Auntie Rose used to be the vice captain of the Lions ladies darts team. Proper sports fan, used to take me to the Rangers games home and away when I was young. [Post edited 1 May 2023 8:55]

Got a close friend who is a big speedway fan, though he now lives in Oz. He used to do all the Kent tracks. I didn't notice until recently the one at Crayford that is still at least a dogs' track. However, it is also a rather unusual track in that the spectators are all behind a glass wall, which may be good for greyhounds but not really for bikes. As to London, he just told me, at least 20 or 30 years since most operated. Hackney long before the London Olympics, Wimbledon well before that, Wembley and West Ham before that and White City even longer ago. Closest to London still winning 15 years ago Purfleet or Rye House in Hoddesden. Oxford has reopened recently and Poole is still going but a long train ride! I got into it a few years ago and although have not been to any live, which must be hard these days, but watched some on BT. I do know that there are a number of good Aussie riders.
