What's actually needed? 07:51 - Jan 9 with 6185 viewsGloucs_R

New striker, who knows where the goal is. But apart from that?

Do we have too many players who want to play number 10 and not enough who are more comfortable on the wings?

For me, apart from a striker, central midfield is a growing concern.

Field is excellent, thank goodness, but he's our only consistent player in this area and isn't a creative source for the team.

Iroegbunam is good but makes too many significant errors, seems to 'sulk' if played in a DCM role and, of course, is not ours.

Johansen looks like he's now on a downward curve in terms of injuries and effectiveness. I hope I'm wrong as we desperately need his creative passing.

Amos I so wanted to finally establish himself in the team but feel this season has confirmed he's just too injury prone to do so.

Dozzell just isn't good enough.

Thomas definitely isn't good enough.

Richards; well will we ever find out if he's good enough and where on the pitch he actually plays?

We have a couple of good U21 CMs coming along nicely in Pedder and Aoraha but I think they'll need loans out to help their development and help show whether they can make the step up to senior level.

We need about 8 or 9 first team players so the current lot become the backups.

Blackburn
Millwall
Luton
Preston

All above us in the league and on similar budgets at a guess.

I don't think our expectations are unrealistic as supporters, I just think our recruitment of players could be a lot better and unfortunately we seem to be picking up too many of the same type of players. Ultimately they are not delivering which is why we find ourselves where we are.

Additionally, as Clive mentions in his article, we have this uncanny knack of giving players long contracts who are absolutely bloody useless and will not make it at this level.

Setting aside what we could actually afford, which is not much, the team lacks...
- a decent goalscoring striker
- any pace whatsoever, from anybody
- a voice, leadership
- strength and goals from central midfield

Our set piece and crossing delivery is generally not good enough. Paal seems to be getting more involved in this area with mixed results so far but I’m mildly encouraged. Having JoJo back would help but not in the long term obviously.

We clearly need another striker option as well as Dykes and with Bonne gone, surely that will be forthcoming. Who and how I’ve no idea.

Hard to know for sure until we find out what formation Critchley will settle on. If he prefers to play without 10's then we need a substantial rebuild.

Big problem we have is a lack of options up front. Not renewing Austin was the right call but not replacing him or Gray was ridiculous. You can't go into a season with your only senior striker being someone who regularly goes 2/3 months without a goal.

We've cocked up with the loans so this won't happen but I'd try and get Ben Pearson from Bournemouth, horrible git who can also play a bit. Ashley Barnes was linked and can't imagine he'd come here but would be ideal up front as a target man who holds it up well and can score goals. I doubt either of them are affordable though

Voice/Leadership most critical right now.

We can play when we feel like it and the stars align, but any kind of adversity arises and we fold like a pack of cards.

A Derry or Hill type to set standards on the pitch and kick backsides (team mates and opponents).

We had that for a time when Austin and Johansen came in but once they got injured and/or disinterested things slipped again. And none of the younger regulars (looking at Dieng, Field, Dunne) seem able or willing to take that role on.

The lack of perhaps several combinations of Cameron, Ball, Barbet, Rangel, even captain Scotland Wallace, Gray or Austin whilst none really epitomised a 'leader' like Derry or Hill, they I feel would've been on at the others to step their game up. Johanson has it and seemingly Balogun too, but neither is never on the field. I always hoped Dickie and Dunne would mature to be leaders for us but seemingly both are miles off. I expect Field will probably fill the role over time, but I don't anticipate he'll be with us for many more seasons.

A decent goalscoring striker is needed but it's rare for us to get a 15-20 goal a season player unless on loan or we break the bank.

An annoyance of mine is the flair players who take far too many touches every time they have a chance to either advance the play or shoot themselves.

Everybody thought Amos would be that tenacious box to box midfielder we're crying out for. He's finished at QPR. Dozzell for me is in the last chance saloon. Shows glimpses but never consistency.

I don't disagree with any of you but I'm now regretting starting this thread as it's bloody depressing 😁

On paper there is so much potential with some of these players but the reality is that they simply don't perform or are always on the treatment table

Critchley needs to be very careful as well because we don't have the players that works for his system and he would be better off playing to our strength short term until he's got new players in.

Realistically that won't be until the summer when we can have a big clear out and pick up some players on frees.

I hate FFP 🤬

100% Dave... Getting Tyler Roberts as the experienced Prem loan striker for the season was a bit of a disaster. Gray came in for pelters at times last season but is way, way better than Roberts!

Others have mentioned a Derry type midfielder... I suppose Johansson should be doing that that but is injured too much to have any lasting impact.

And we can add to that a linchpin centre back, a right winger and a couple of competent utility players.

No pressure then!

This! FFP is a fig leaf in my opinion. We have a stupidly skewed, unbalanced and desultory squad of sick notes, bluffers and loanees, with a smattering of quality here and there. Right now, mediocrity is our middle name, and either encouragingly or worryingly, Critchley's already told us he doesn't do it. Him pushing off by Easter to assist the Great Moled One in Glasgow wouldn't amaze me, depending on how the wind around W12 blows. Nevertheless, I'm sure that everyone else's job at the Bush will be safe.

Aside from an actual goalscorer (remember those ?) I think we could do with a decent box to box midfielder along the lines of Ale Faurlin

We have numerous injury prone midfielders - illegal I suspect but maybe we could melt down Johansen+Dozzel+Thomas+Amos+Bettache and make one really good one ?

Alternatively the Branagan lad at Oxford would be my choice. He's a good age (26 I think), gets up and down, has played all season so far and scores some lovely free kicks (which we could do with)

A mobile striker who plays on the shoulder of centre halves and is a poacher in the box.

Yes, we would all like better midfielders but we have enough.
Priority is a striker.
