Why the beef with him. What is the history?

Mc Lean on 17:29 - Oct 22 with 6426 viewskernowhoop

A few years ago, he refused to wear a shirt with a commemorative poppy on it (around Armistice Day). Was it that?

Mc Lean on 17:31 - Oct 22 with 6400 viewsMiss_Terraces

Not wearing a poppy. I can totally understand why the Irish and Middle East players, don't want to wear one but unfortunately the vocal minority can't.

Refuses to do the minutes silence on Armistice Day or have the poppy on his shirt. All linked to NI and the Republican cause.

He also dived like a swallow to try and get a penalty against us in the play off semi final. Cheating cûnt.

He's a Catholic from Derry/Londonderry I believe, rather than simply Irish...

Mc Lean on 17:41 - Oct 22 with 6242 viewsNW5Hoop

He's thought a lot more about the meaning of the poppy than any of the people who boo him. I respect him for that.

He will always be showered with abuse which is not right regardless what fans believe.

He's a good player too. Always seems to give us problems as he did today.

My mum & dad were Irish, as were their parents. My granddads brother died in the First World War.

Thousands of Irish died during the two world wars.

He’s not the brightest crayon in the box either. During the 2018 World Cup, he was pictured with his kids wearing balaclavas, in reference to his heroes, the IRA.

He does himself no favours whatsoever.

So there’s a few here who accept and understand his POV

Fair play. Your choice

For me I think he’s an absolute c u next Tuesday for a whole host of reasons ranging from terrorist sympathies to just being a slag of a player.
May he rot

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

He's very anti English but willing to play here and earn a very good wage. Hypocrite of the worst sort.

I totally agree with you that he's a slag of a player but the abuse he receives is astronomical to what he deserves

Yes, read his reasoning recently about how voting was stitched up where he lives and how Catholics although the majority could only return a minority of councillors, his views on Bloody Sunday have some parallels to Hillsborough where it was the cover-up by the authorities as much as the crime that extended the grieving.

What is your understanding then of somebody who refuses to wear a symbol respecting people who died in the two world wars. Nothing to do with the troubles in NI

It’s not just two world wars, it’s all conflicts - which thus does include the troubles.

If the Royal British Legion respect his decision, that should be good enough for everyone else to do so imho.

It's not just about those two wars, it's about every war and conflict. It's the conflicts that are personal to him and his family and friends that he has a problem with.
I'm not defending him for any of his actions, I just understand why he's conflicted to wear a poppy. That's it

Don't have a problem with his point of view but he doesn't come across well. Tw4t for that dive in the semi that Clattenberg saw through but generally a good footballer, didn't seem fully on it today but when he was he did cause Laird problems.

Agree with all of that.

I've never worn a poppy either, but McClean is a hard man to like or defend. And some of that is his own fault.

He got dogs abuse at Sunderland the other week . Racially abused by thirty thousand fans and the Fa sits on it hands. Disgraceful. He doesn’t help himself with some of his antics mind.
Hats off to our lot today. He got some stick but nothing over the top!!

He might be a bit of a twát but he's entitled to his opinions and I don't have a problem with him expressing them.

Grew up as an Irish Catholic but am torn on him.

He shouldn't be abused for refusing to wear a poppy considering the past actions of the Brits.

However, dressing in a balaclava. You can't really defend that.

So there is one or two who do not agree with him.. Your entitled to your opinion but it doesn't mean sh*t.

and he's probably right.

If we fought for one thing it was freedom for people to hold their own views and opinions, he may not be "right" in most peoples eyes, doesn't mean he's not entitled to a point of view.
