Should have signed the contract the club offered him, would have made him the top earner at Swansea. Holding out for even more as far as I am concerned.

But should I be bothered ?

It's more of a concern that the club think he's worth making the highest paid player.

If he was as good as he thinks he is someone would have signed him by now. Much like Cooper, he's finding that his actual standing within the game is far lower than he might have previously believed.

Like Cooper he is making eyes at other clubs while in a leadership position. His agent wants Swansea to drop their fee requirements to allow Fulham to pay him more money in wages. That is the way I see it.

Swansea presumably want around £4-5m. I expect some compromise will be worked out. Grimes has probably played his last game for Swansea.

For me this is when a captain, a true leader grasps everyone by the neck and sorts it out on the pitch. Preston had us tied up after fifteen minutes, we couldn’t move. He disappeared completely.

That’s not a captain or a leader. More like a player looking not to get injured.

Couldn't agree more Keith. There is definitely a player in there but he is about as much of a captain as pugwash was

Sometimes I wonder if I'm being unduly harsh on Grimes.

Like any football supporter I don't know everything, but when it comes to assessing a players ability I like to think that my success rate is as good as any and better than most. There's not many players that I've praised or criticised over the years who has ended up coming out any differently but Grimes is a bit of an anomaly. He's held in massively high regard by some when to me he's never been anything more than average at best.

What am I missing? Is there anything?

Never ever been Captain material and should never have been given the armband IMO, maybe he offers something behind the scenes, but he certainly doesn't on the field.

Ayew carried him in the captaincy duties. Now we’ve got no one on the pitch to sort the team out when needed.

Itchy has touched on it - he's the type of player who will perform better when surrounded by better players. Ok, you could argue this is true for many players but he has shown flashes of this ability many times but it is often drowned out by the safety first, pass backwards play that was drummed into him.

Additionally I agree that he is taking the piss. He has not shown the consistent ability that warrants him taking the highest wage at the club - if he had your post would have been different.

I also suspect that when up to speed Downes will surpass what Grimes has shown to date. If he (Grimes) believes that he is worth it he should have demonstrated it on the pitch - he has not and I'm a "fan" of him.

I don't think you're missing anything - but then, I don't rate him either. I think it's lazy punditry, lazy journalism, etc. I can understand his managers bigging him up, because they can't be seen to do otherwise. It's a bit like the Cooper situation last year. He was getting plaudits from everywhere, except from the rest of us who watched every minute of every game. Similarly with commentators (at least up until this season), who would continually refer to us as a passing team who loved to control the game by having possession - when in fact we hadn't been like that for years. Grimes is no captain. Defensively, he's OK. A playmaker he is not. He's slow in thought and action. And increasingly he's getting caught in possession because he doesn't have the skillset (or the feet) to move the ball on quickly.

I know he is young, and need time to develop but I would love to see Dan Wiiliams have an opportunity to grow and succeed in that Grimes role.

You’re not missing anything. ‘Average’ is reserved for his good games. He puts his foot in and does some good things defensively. But he’s a very underwhelming midfield player offering very little in attack most of the time.

Being one footed is his problem, he can’t adjust his feet properly under an aggressive press and too easily gets caught in possession. Can’t take a corner or a free kick - it’s just because he’s English and good English players are always overhyped. We should have sold him far sooner.

The fee will be undisclosed either way. It's how things are done outside big marquee signings in the top leagues.

I agree with this.

I dont think we should have spent £1.7m on Grimes when we did.
Below first team level its just a guess, a hunch, a gamble ….

No - below first team level we work with the likes of Dan W, Ben x2, Connor, Jazz, Joey x2.
Our talent.

We should only spend money on the first team, other than that its developing our own.

Think Kenji, and think Zabret (now at Aberyswyth), all brought in below first team level and stayed for many years. Only to be deemed not good enough. We simply cant afford that model.

Buy people who improve the first team, thats it.

And if after all these good years, and the captaincy, that Grimes is not appreciative of the investment Swans have made in him then i would be more than disappointed.
I hope Keith is wrong.

I've said before he's not instinctive, he thinks too much. Some players will see a pass and try to make it, Grimes thinks first and the opportunity is gone so then he takes the safe option. It makes his passing stats look great for completed passes but the reality is it often stops our attacking momentum and sees us go backwards.
Grimes is great in that role if you're 2 nil up but a hindrance when your losing. If Fulham will pay near 4 million for him I'd be very happy. Downes shows much more forward drive and I'm hoping Walsh can get and stay fit and give us another attacking edge.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

That’s the key to our new style, moving the ball quickly . Grimes just hasn’t got the tools in his box. To be honest I’d be prepared to let him go for two and a half mil

OMcB and Dan James follow that model and were sold for a whopping £33m. Byers did good service fr a while. Keniji was very decent and may have featured in the championship. You will notice players who do a few years in the academy slot into the first team seemlessly like Dan Williams recently.

Garrick and Benda are new kids on the block grafting away to turn themselves into worthwhile assets for the cub. Not locals.

Let me be clear, i would not sign anyone for money that does not immediately improve our first team.

We lost more than £100m per season by being relegated from the Prem.
Our Academy went missing in action throughout.
Ben at the start, Roberts at the end - other than that it just used up money that could have helped the first team.
We paid £1.7m for Grimes, we flew Zabret in from god knows where.
Beloved Kenji was not good enough, all the Scottish signings not good enough.
Benda is not good enough.
Do you see tbe pattern..?
We are guessing.

Its the cheaper local model that claims Roberts, Rodon, Williams, Cabango.
Not the dream land model you are defending. Sit down.
Your model is like betting on a number in the casino - it rarely works.

But Oli, but Dan - well Oli has had more arrests than Prem goals in the last 12 months, we robbed Sheff Utd. How much is he worth today i wonder ?

The only real exception to the rule is Dan James. However the cost of the misfits dwarfs the £15m we got for Dan.
And that ignores the failure of our Academy to help us stay in the Prem in any way whatsoever.

We paid £1.5 for Mo Barrow under Monk !!
And that Rory Donnelly, whatever happened to … never mind, eh ?
