As something of an oldie I sometimes struggle to understand how modern managers set up their teams to play. I'm all right with overlapping fullbacks and the concept of wing backs but can someone please explain to me RH's system whereby the right back is free to roam into the centre (or even the left side) of our attack? Cedric did it quite often, the goal at Wigan being a notable example. Now KWP is doing it even more (possibly more youthful energy than Cedric). Not criticising, quite the reverse!

Attacking right backs on 22:41 - Jul 19 with 1611 views
I think it’s fairly recent, if the full backs come inside it floods the middle gives wingers more space to attack, and makes it easier to play out from the back. Think Guardiola is credited with starting it. Would’ve thought it works better with 3 at the back as they can cover better for the counter but as Ralph uses a back 4 now it must require our players to have a lot of positional sense and brains to not leave gaps.
