1988 President's Cup in Korea on 10:37 - May 27 with 2199 views | MrSheen | First I've heard of it. Rangers in a cup, away from home, only going to end one way. Still, taking on the whole Soviet Union and the USA was good preparation for China. http://www.rsssf.com/tabless/skor-pres88.html Looks like Paul Parker got himself sent off against the Nigerians. Not that kind of player. Happy 58th Birthday, David Pizanti. Wikipedia owes you 2 QPR goals now. [Post edited 27 May 2020 11:55]

1988 President's Cup in Korea on 19:00 - May 27 with 2018 views | St_Pollock | Have read about it before - possibly via a tweet from RetroQPR (great account to follow BTW) but information is sketchy. Even in Macey's official history (1999) it does not mention the tournament in the section for that season or in the list of 1st team friendlies either: they begin with the match against Nassjo on 25/7/88.

That's "Fereday" in Hangul. This would be a great Podcast special, the hidden story of the boys of '88. Did they bring their own beans, like Ian Rush in Italy?

1988 President's Cup in Korea on 11:50 - May 28 with 1832 views | MrSheen | I just asked Paul Parker on Twitter why he got sent off, and he said it was for throwing the ball in a player's face! Must have been a very hot day. We need to know the tour history.
1988 President's Cup in Korea on 13:03 - May 28 with 1809 views | TacticalR | In the Wiki article the name of our scorer against USA is given as ë°ë ˆë””, which is Deredi in the Western alphabet, and I wondered who that might be. Fortunately MrSheen's linked article solves the mystery: Fereday. In Korean there is no 'F' sound, so 'F' is normally rendered as 'P', so that Wiki transliteration is pretty unorthodox. Edit: Just realised MrSheen had already commented on this. [Post edited 28 May 2020 13:09]

That's interesting. I don't anything about Korean, but with Japanese, transliterations of Western names also take a bit of guesswork. There are different sounds they don't have, and the only free-standing consonant allowed is "n", everything else must end in a vowel. Donald Trump would be Donarudo Toranpu, Steve Wicks is Suteibu Uikkusu.

As far as I know the Koreans try to reproduce the foreign word as far as possible, i.e. they don't try to make it follow Korean rules, just make it so people can pronounce it e.g. France = 프랑스 = Pe-rang-se. In English sometimes we don't follow the English rules with imported words e.g. 'Iraq' - no English word can end in q.
