Hopefully dipping into the LFW mine of expertise here!
Ive never had a proper CV and all jobs I've had have really been through contacts etc and current one I was approached by employer.
There is a job come up locally which is interesting me but its a national company so full CV and application process, does anyone have a decent template I can download etc which suits the modern process?
I'm sure i've pretty much got suitable background and vocational qualifications, although it's in a different field to my work history, so it's getting it down in the right way so I can hopefully get to interview process.

Chaps just by coincidence I’m in the same position right now, I’ve been in my present job for 15 years and so no need for a CV, anyway I’m looking for a change and applied for a job with another company where a friend of mine works ,but didn’t get far as the HR lady said my CC presentation was weak,so any pointers greatly appreciated.... |  | | |

Golden rule for me - less is more. Don't cram it in, just make it easy and quick to read, yours will probably be one of many and so it needs to be sharp and impactful.
Therefore don't concentrate much on anything over 4 or 5 years ago (list them certainly with dates but not detailed description unless it's super relevant).
Recent years experience is most relevant. And don't rattle on about hobbies and interests - again, unless super relevant. And keep the education section very brief (unless you're a first jobber, which i'm guessing you're not) - don't bother with dates etc. Eg. 7 GCSE, 2 A Levels and any other qualifications - don't list subjects except degree if you've got one.
Two pages max, and if you can get it onto one very impactful one pager then preferable (for me at least).
CV is not there to sell you into the role really...it's there to say you're definitely worth checking out. Selling yourself comes at the interview.
This is clearly my personal opinion btw.

Two pages max , get your main selling points in the first few paragraphs , keep the info brief as the can ask you for more detail during the interview

I remember trying to help my mate Ollie with his once. He had it about six pages long. I told him it's supposed to be on one sheet of paper, so he shrunk the font and removed all of the borders so it did fit on one piece of paper, even if it was unreadable. Not quite my intention.

Good point here around tailoring the CV for the job, common mistake is to have one CV and then rely on the employer to find the relevant experience within it.
Generally focus on what you have done most latterly. Two sides of A4 max. Make it punchy in style - use bullet points and make them succinct. Avoid being too verbose, needs to be easy on the eye.
For qualifications highlight those most relevant for the job and also those which trump others (O levels aren't of real interest if you have a degree).
Open with a personal statement, but avoid too much business speak BS. try to bring out simply what you are about and what qualities set you aside for others.
Always make sure you can talk to the document in detail - ultimately the CV opens the door, it is down to you whether you get the job

For years, i actually had a very brief 2 or 3 line section at the end on personal interests and put that i'm a QPR fan and it was a great idea. People would be really surprised i did but it came up in virtually every interview and you would have a good relaxed few minutes talking with the person interviewing you about football. For better or worse, means you stand out a little.
Now i have a lot more professional experience, i dont have that section but in the early days, i do genuinely think it helped. | | | |
