Blimey we have signed him. Just now.

Never knowingly right.

Wheeley excited about this signing!

Usual analysis piece...

One for now? Signing 31st Aug 2017 10:51

I used to live near Staines so remember watching him play then for Staines Town. He was obviously younger and raw but he was the best player in that team. Pacey, bit of skill, decent finish. Exactly the type of signing we need going forwards but just can't see where he fits in our current 3-5-2 system. He isn't a wing back or a central midfielder but could possibly play in the front 2. Can see him being more of a sub for now and coming on to inject pace against tired legs or when we switch formation if chasing a game (see the Hull game). Overall very pleased!

Good luck to him. Has anyone informed him that one mistake and so called fans will slaughter him on here ?

Probably introduce him as a sub or rwb and see if we can make him into a successor to Wsolek, who could be a future profitable sale.

Looking forward to seeing him, hoping he has the Ainsworth attitude.

Well that was quick.

"it’s signings like this that excite me these days."

Couldn't agree more.

Amazing how much the adventure of QPR over the last 5 years has changed my perceptions of football.

The pieces are often pre-written. The drawback is we have a dozen or so kicking around for players we never actually signed.

That might make quite a decent feature some time - players we might have signed, how it would have looked at the time, then reading them with the benefit of hindsight.

Sadly I have to say that, reading that piece, I'm pretty much hoping to read that we do sell Yeni. Nothing against the bloke at all, but reading some of Clive's stuff about FFP and a potential transfer ban is frightening, I think it has to be one-out for every one-in now.

I'm really enjoying our evolution from a team that previously purchased players who were good 8 years ago but are now shot and are on too much money; to one that purchases players who might just be very good in 1/2/3 years time. Its all starting to feel a bit like when we signed Trev from Blackpool, Sir Les from Hayes etc

Still, us fans have evolved too, and I cant wait to impede David Wheeler's development by booing the living fuq out of him if he dares to misplace a pass / waste a chance.

Seems like the right sort of player for us

I am pleased that we have just signed him according to the club web site as opposed to "swooped in"

The less hyperbole over a signing the better chance a player has of getting through the first 20 minutes of his debut without being told to "Fu^k of you k*nt"

Should improve our threat level from Corners and Free kicks

Got a good feeling about this - nice Austin/Ainsworth vibes (without expectations), the grittier, self-made type.

What sold me on him was a exchange on Twitter (that I can't find now annoyingly) between Exeter fans wondering if he can make the step up - someone said that while he may be limited in some ways he knows exactly what those limitations are and makes himself as effective as possible within that. Which is what we could say of all our best, favourite players over the years.

Tactically I'm really pleased about his versatility - actual squad depth instead of the breadth of having too many specialist snowflake players around - and especially the fact that he offers a proficient aerial option without making sacrifices in mobility and pressing and movement in the team. That sort of physical wing-forward thing feels like something we've been chasing since last summer, with Leckie and Pilkington etc.

Re fitting into the formation, I wonder the same, regarding Wheeler and Smyth, who both sound like attacking wide players.

It brings to mind the signing of Jamie Mackie (first time round).

I have a feeling that he will be played as one of the front two.

Welcome David. Good luck to you.

Very well written column.

I like people who are prepared to offer an opinion that is likely to split people. Could play it safe but is reasoned and balanced.

So has Matt Smith...they can swap stories !

Seriously, though, this is potentially a very good signing.

Funny how the booing thing comes up whenever we sign anyone new. I'm a lifelong fan, was an ST holder for years, turned up to every game to watch the likes of Georges Santos and Christer Warren, and have never in my life considered booing or verbally abusing any one of our players. Cheered, clapped, sang, occasionally held my head in my hands, but NEVER got on the back of one of our own.

And I never will.
