I reckon we've had 14 ties in round 3 or further since that Man Utd game in 1986. |
In those 14 ties some bigish teams as well with decent away followings and good games both home and away. 6 of those are accounted for in 2 seasons ,i still think we have had some big names and better than average luck of the draw. |  | | |

As far as I can remember , off the top of my head, with the big teams involved, since Liverpool, we've drawn Charlton a, Preston a, Coventry h, Wolves a, Leeds h, Sheffield W h, Nottingham forest h, Stoke h, Barrow a. (obviously that involves 4th and 5th rnd) [Post edited 5 Dec 2016 21:25]

You're guaranteed more gate money if the game is away though, it's never totally guaranteed that it'll be selected on TV. |
Drawing a bigger team on their own patch makes a live game even less likely. Rochdale arent a big enough pull to get a decent enough crowd that we could make a killing on gate receipts either, its the glamour that is appealing, but id rather wait and get as far as possible before drawing the biggies. |  |

Yes, it annoys me because it always feels like the fans wanting those types of games are more interested in Ibra an Pogba etc, then going to watch Dale, im not putting you in that category, it just frustrates me. |
But why? I can only think of Chaff who posts on here where that might apply - and even then I would bet he would be equally interested in Dale players as those in red.
That's why I would want to see us play a team like Man U. Our young academy products against the likes of Pogba and Ibra - and the chance of them excelling. Mourinho and Hill stood side by side on the touchline, battling wits.

If you look at it that way, with Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool all at home to lesser opposition and City and Arsenal having a good chance of progressing against West Ham and Preston - were we to get through the odds of getting a cracker in round 4 look a whole lot better. | |

Yup, but from a Dale perspective, as much as we would like to play the Bobby Dazzlers, the flip side of the draw is that the team have got nothing that may distract them from focusing on staying in or around the playoffs into the new year. The risk of being banned or picking up an injury and missing, with all due respect, Barrow away is not quite as devastaing as missing the once in a lifetime, which it will be for most of them, chance of having the opportunity to play at Old Trafford or going toe to toe with the likes of David Silva etc. A massive tie may be a bit all consuming. Why not be consumed with the play-offs, we are in them after all and the brilliant Checkakhan Cup remember, well until tomorrow, sorry footy gods. | |

I'm not sure that's true, off the top of my head I can certainly remember Crawley, Cambridge and Burton Albion all being live on TV at Old Trafford in recent years. Sure it's the same with other clubs but can remember United's clearly. One or two may have been replays but they were certainly live on TV at Old Trafford.
As for the crowd. Well, looking at the three fixtures I've just mentioned there:

Burton Albion - 53, 564.
