Thompson and Bunny on 00:39 - Sep 18 by dale4ever | There is no doubt Jim has been weak at left back this season, but he was brilliant at centre back today. He probably deserves a run of games at CH. Some of his last ditch tackles today along with his overall play were brilliant, whether you think he's a good player or not today he was excellent against some very good attacking options. Hopefully KH will see he's ten times better at CH than at left back! [Post edited 18 Sep 2016 0:44]

Couldn't agree more. I was stood at the front of the Pearl St when he did some major fist-pumping at the final whistle, and he was worthy of the sponsors MoM award

Thompson and Bunny on 19:00 - Sep 17 by 1907 | Scraping an 86th minute winner very much against the run of play would be classed as getting out of jail with it. We were brilliant for spells in the first half but a ridiculous decision by our CH yet again ALMOST cost us the win. We're not going to get lucky like that many times over the season we have to be better. |
Do goals scored in the 86th minute not count the same as goals scored in any other minute? How was it 'very much against the run of play'? How was it lucky? I could understand saying we had scraped a win had we been dominated for most of the match, but on the balance of the 90 minutes, we deserved the points. Why try to turn it into something it isn't? And which other ridiculous decisions has McGahey made this season?

And that was very much my opinion too, expressed on here on more than one occasion recently. I'd given up on Bunney, quite frankly. But if you watch someone put in a performance you have to be able to put your hand up and give credit. His overall contribution was more significant than any other game he's played for Dale - hence my point about not just scoring goals in reply to another poster. He was strong in the tackle, good in the air, positive going forward. The best two things were his crosses and his positional play, which given the unusual formation was pretty much outstanding. JT was steady and worked well in tandem with Bunney, doing the simple things well and looking entirely comfortable in possession. tbh i'm not bothered if that convinces you or not - it'll do for me. A stupid penalty nearly cost us three points did it not? A needless foul and penalty and that game was almost past us, thank god we had some players committed to the end

Whether the foul and penalty (not calling them needless because McGahey had to make some kind of challenge there) almost cost us the three points or not, our winner certainly wasn't against the run of play. I've been a big critic of Bunney in the past, as have most people on this forum, but he was excellent today. Made the point in the car home after the game that perhaps the reason we don't see those crosses from Bunney when he is playing further forward is that he's allowed less space. In Hill's first spell we used to see left wingers like Rundle/Prendergast/Thompson hold the ball up wide left and play it back to Tom Kennedy who was in enough space to get the cross over and had a better view of where to aim at from the deeper position. That's what Bunney's crossing reminded me of today. He was defensively solid too along with Vincenti, who did dive into a couple of challenges late on but otherwise did well, particularly in the first half. McNulty and Keane were also fantastic for me. Henderson and Camps were pretty ineffective however and I would certainly consider dropping Henderson for Davies, or perhaps bringing Henderson into the CAM role behind Davies. The goal today will give him a big confidence boost and playing regularly will be the best way to get him up to full fitness. Not impressed with Fleetwood and think they're in a bit of a false position personally. I don't expect them to be pushing for the play-offs this season. A pretty big three points nonetheless and after Millwall's defeat today, we have no reason to fear them next week. Still two very tough games against two promotion favourites coming up, so more battling performances required.

Thompson and Bunny on 23:52 - Sep 17 by Hopwoodblue | I heard the team selection was based on a team meeting, players turning up late for said meeting and then players arguing with Keith at the meeting. Make of that what you will but it certainly was a strange selection and no mention of injuries to the players left out. |
Jamie Allen doesn't seem the arguing type to me. I'm guessing that's a load of bollocks.

what starting eleven would have seen these nine people attend? Perhaps we should announce a made up side including messi and ronaldo, and all of a sudden we'll have people queuing round the block.

It makes the wins more special. What a cross from Bunney for the winner.. Well played Joe. Keane was my MOM. Neat tidy aggressive composed... Not coming to the game because of a team sheet!! FFS grow a pair and man up.. Don't bother with Milwall or Bolton they are massive clubs and we have NO chance of any points. Grrrrr. Up the Dale!!!!!!!!

Yes, one of whom was the player you've clearly got it in for, for some reason. If he hadn't made the challenge, it would have been a one-on-one with Lillis. Maybe he should do that instead next time.

I'm always happy, even when my words might suggest otherwise! Just to add to the Bunney debate, he's played in a left-sided role before and looks far more comfortable and effective there. Hilly referred to it in his post-match interview as similar to how we used Matty Done. Without comparing the two, for periods during the game yesterday Bunney was left with acres of room to operate in. The real test for him will come when opponents start to get wise and he then has to be good enough (like Done) to adapt. I think he could have a future there but would still be loathe to see him return to a target-man role, for which he just hasn't got the physique. Happy to see him progress, if he's got the ability.

A mate in the Myopia Lane however assured me it was. He did one fantastic block late on at 1-1 in the second half, putting your body on the line type tackle. He can be as chuffed as he likes for me. Yeap, that one just before half-time might have been one of the best tackles I've ever seen from a Dale player.

I suppose you could argue that McNulty would've got around to cover but it looked like their striker would've been clean through for a one on one.

Its not an automatic red card anymore - if the ref thinks a genuine attempt is made to get the ball.
