Without reading too much into it, it does seem odd that he was driving on the Heathrow Perimeter Rd - that's not a road I would use if I was travelling from Chiswick to Cobham - it's really used for airport traffic only.

He'll have a right job to get insured next time.

Agree but it starts with helping yourself. I've been to golf days or horse racing days over the years and I purposely leave the car/motorbike at home. Got the train there and can't remember how I got back! He can easily afford a cab.

That is exactly the problem he has. I would imagine that he made the intelligent decision not to drink so took his car. Then just had a small one at the halfway bar with the other lads...and that's all it takes. An almighty lack of self control is the harsh way of describing the problem. Barney from the Simpsons always comes to mind as the caricature of the true alcoholic.
