I’m an atheist, but my parents are religious, and I think their faith has helped them cope with a lot of difficult moments in their lives, and they’ve always undertaken a lot of charity work and fundraising; driven in part by their religion. To me it seems borderline insane/infantile to hold the beliefs they do, but I think it’s generally been a force for good in their lives. I think the key is accepting that not everyone sees the world the same was as you do — my brothers and me are atheist, stopped going to church as soon as we were given the option, none of our kids are christened, none of us got married in church etc, and my parents have never said a word about it. I’m sure they’re sad about it, but they respect our right to get on with our own lives as we see fit. The problem is when people of any faith, seek to impose their religion on others. The problem, as ever, is extremism.

No disrespect to Konk, who always comes across as a genuine good guy, but his parents gave him a choice which he hasn't availed to his own children.
If my son wants to follow a faith then that will be his decision. I'm always respectful of my parent's faith and when it's discussed with my nephews and nieces, it's always explained that whilst we don't share their beliefs, it brings them a lot of comfort and informs a lot of the good stuff they do. My son is too young to be having these chats with me, but I'll adopt the same tone.
Personally, I think you can teach your kids a lot of the virtues from various faiths without having to immerse them in it. I think it's possible to try and be good, kind, charitable etc without needing to be religious.

I’m hugely conflicted by this: I’m generally a big fan of law and order, but I have been a bit puzzled by people suggesting we should have brought Mohammed Emwazi to stand trial rather than kill him via a drone strike. I’m no military expert, but extracting him from Raqqa looked a bit trickier than your average citizens arrest and I'm not sure I care that much about his rights, that I'd have wanted to see people killed whilst trying to get him out of Syria.
I really struggle with this stuff, because I start seeing the attraction of disappearing problematic people, but I know that's not the way to go. But you put them in prison and you watch as they indoctrinate more people and...what's the answer?

Yeah but you are a capable bloke and I imagine that you can make things work out for your kids in a lot of different ways. But we're not talking about people with those options here, we're talking about people with no options, no prospects, no opportunities - no real hope really. Whatever the best way is to get the biggest number of people to make the most of themselves, this way isn't it. You need choices, chances - different ways of approaching life and help to find the right one. It'll never be a perfect world, but it could be a lot better. I wouldn't dream of thinking that what my kids need is the same as what I needed.
