A footballer dies in Argentina 16:41 - May 14 with 4969 viewsQPR_ARG

Upon his death, a message he posted on Facebook has me in tears.

Emanuel Ortega was a Primera C player (something like League 2 but with a lot less money involved). He fell and hit his head against a wall (too close to the pitch) during a game. There's footage, but I don't even want to see it.

The accident happened a few days ago but he died this morning. The Argentine FA has suspended all activity for this weekend as a result.

But there is a message he posted on Facebook three years ago that really shook me. I think a lot of the QPR players should be asked to read this.

Here's my translation:

"I may never play FOOTBALL professionally, maybe I will. But playing at an amateur level, I go after every ball with my life, even if I have to die for it. When my legs say STOP, my heart says CARRY ON. Unlike professionals, when my boots break, I don't just replace them. I spend my nights fixing them, putting the pieces together so I can carry on playing. Because this is what I love. Football is my LIFE, not just a passtime. Football is what makes me forget about everything else and I would give my life for football. The day I can't continue playing, that's when life will be over"

Tragic, and very moving.

It's not just at QPR either - so many hangers-on at various clubs who treat the fans and club with disdain and show off their wealth with a lack of taste and respect.

This was a player who was in it for the right reasons. How many times have we said we'd rather see our team play with pride and passion?

Thanks for posting this.

"Thank you for supporting Queens Park Rangers Steep Staircase"... and I thought I'd signed up for a rollercoaster.

Like you say really sad but also inspiring; what a contrast to so many players in the uk who love to pat their club badge but who in reality live and play for the money.
RIP

This should be given to every player at QPR from Youth to First Teamer.

He played for a small club in the Southern part of the Greater Buenos Aires area.

The club is called San Martin de Burzaco.

Excuse my ignorance, but is a player at that level likely to have been paid enough to see his family ok?

Not a chance. All of them have to have day jobs. The pyramid goes like this:

1st Tier: Primera Division
2nd Tier: Primera B Nacional
3rd Tier: Primera B Metropolitana - Torneo Federal A (the former for teams from Buenos Aires and surroundings, the latter for teams from the provinces. Promoted teams from both, go to Primera B Nacional. So this is effectively the third tier only it's divided in the same way -give or take- than Conference North and Conference South)
4th Tier: Primera C - Torneo Federal B (same principle as above)
5th Tier: Primera D

The Primera C (where San Martin de Burzaco plays) has recently been made professional -it was 100% amateur a couple of years ago-, but a salary at any club at this level is far from decent to make a living. Let alone seeing their family OK.

That's so depressing, 1 or 2 weeks of SWP's or Adels wages would probably see his family Ok, yet both those players can earn that sort of money without trying.

Well let's hope the football world has a whip round and they get looked after.

This is not a fair world, is it?

The way riches are distributed is unfair (and has always been unfair). In football and outside of it.

But yes, one week of SWP's wages would buy a flat in Buenos Aires! Imagine how many mansions and entire buildings can be bought with what he stole from QPR since 2011!

Depressing just doesn't begin to cover it!

Such a travesty and insult to that poor kid that on "footballer day" and with the AFA having suspended this weekends games as a tribute and mark of respect that all this was abused and ignored after the utter madness of qhat happened as the players were coming out for the second half of the superclasico cup game.

An utter shambles and a very sad and embarrassing day for Argentinean football.

I've got the Power.

I was invited to the Harlington training ground a few years ago (raffle prize draw) and I couldnt believe the array of top of the range cars the players (even the juniors) were arriving in.
Emanuel Ortega - RIP.
