The Official Swansea V Hull Thread on 17:24 - Apr 4 by Groo | A tech question here, why was this not offside? when getting the ball Gomis was onside but when the ball was played forward he was miles offside. When does not interfering start and stop? |
Good question. Is it because it became a new passage of play once the Hull player headed the ball?

I wondered about that as well, the only thing I can think of is that their defender headed the ball to Gomis.

I was a bit surprised to see the red come out, having had a pretty good view of it. I checked the BBC page and the main guy writing it thought it was a shocking challenge, while Kevin Kilbane thought it was a clear red. Phil Thompson and Barry Horne are both clueless, so probably a nailed on red card.

when the ball was headed forward from us (from Cork was it?) he made no attempt to get the ball so was not offside as he wasn't interfering with play. The ball was then headed (not deflected, it was a proper header) from the Hull player and you can't be offside from an opponent playing the ball (you can from a deflection which is the difference). Btw - on the red card - it was red all day long - a terrible challenge - Horne is a complete moron and so anti Swans it is a joke - I couldn't find a stream today without him commentating - in the past I have listened with a Russian commentary to avoid him - hate it with the sound off though as you can't hear the crowd.

when our player headed it into the box, gomis did not interfere with the ball at all so he did not affect the game, once the hull defender touched it with his head it meant that a new phase of play started and gomis is no longer classed as an offside player.

The Official Swansea V Hull Thread on 15:58 - Apr 4 by robld002 | Why does taylor always stop and turn around when a forward run would be far more useful?!?! |
Two reasons. Firstly it's because he's crap going forward, but secondly because it's what he's been told to do. Happens to often with too many players to be a coincidence. Good win today, although a frankly piss poor second half display had us labouring for it before that late goal. There were times when you'd swear it was us down to ten men we were so cautious and lacking in attacking intent.

The truth is they're making it up as they go along. I watched a game a few weeks ago with a similar incident, and the player was deemed to be offside. Supposedly it doesn't matter who plays the ball, offside is offside.

of course it matters. You can only be offside if the ball is played to you by your own team, not by the opposition (as I said earlier, a deflection doesn't count). The only possible way he could have been given offside is if he was deemed to have interfered with the Hull players going for the ball (which Bruce claimed) even though he was yards from them.

Well the referee/linesman in that particular game thought otherwise. It's hardly a clear rule, evidently. It can go either way on the day. Again, if he's not interfering standing between the goalkeeper and defenders in the penalty area, then what is he exactly doing? [Post edited 4 Apr 2015 18:21]

The Official Swansea V Hull Thread on 18:30 - Apr 4 with 2537 views | swan_si | and a special mention for Wayne Routledge, for the way he spun N'Doye around after Ash fouled him, great interception by Routs i thought, i know he probably saved N'Doye a possible red for retaliating, but it might of cost Ash a red if it had all kicked off.

it is clear - you can only be offside from your own team playing the ball to you. That's why if a defender passes back to the goalkeeper and the opposition player is standing there unseen, they can score and it's not offside. I haven't seen the game you talk about so obviously can't say what they gave in that case.

It certainly is not clear, as arguably it was one phase of play between Corks header and the goal. The example you present is different as the player has clear possession of the ball Obviously it was a great finish and I couldn't give a rats arse because he got the decision. Any further reading you desire should be directed to Law 11, and 'gaining an advantage' in an offside position. Knock yourself out, good day.

The Official Swansea V Hull Thread on 19:27 - Apr 4 with 2288 views | Dull1Thomas | The red came a few minutes after the Ash / N'Doye bust up and the ref may have been making sure things weren't going to get out of hand. We've seen those given red, yellow and play on. I was surprised Gomis wasn't pulled up for dangerous play on his first goal - his foot wasn't far from the defenders head. Nothing to add on the game. 3 well taken goals, decent first half, poor second, everything narrow & Jonjo still hacks me off. [Post edited 4 Apr 2015 19:30]

I was waiting for flag go up for me it's offside. If gomis not there defender would not played ball. Defender leaves it flag probably goes up so makes no sense to me

because he's so busy pointing to empty spaces that he doesn't see any pass and has NO ball control. If only he had Rangel's ability to see a pass and to make space . . . . . or even better If only Rangel had Taylors speed and youth !!!
