Appreciate our US friends might be sold but not my favourite night of the year to be honest.
Has it caught on in UK or elsewhere?
Lot of marketing behind it here now & definitely got the kids into it.
Somehow I always end up holding the bloody fort and answering the door 50 f'ing times an hour....

pure hilarity in brentwood last year when eggs were thrown at the windows of all the houses down my street(although that just could have been some of my fans on here)...

little scene from the genuinely unsettling and creepy halloween 3....and conal cochrans chilling soliloquy

"you don't really know much about Halloween... you thought no further than the strange custom of having your children wear masks and go out begging for candy....

....... It was the start of the year in our old Celtic lands, and we'd be waiting... in our houses of wattles and clay. The barriers would be down, you see, between the real and the unreal, and the dead might be looking in... to sit by our fires of turf....Halloween... the festival of Samhain! The last great one took place three thousand years ago, when the hills ran red... with the blood of animals and children........."

what a load of old septic tank tape worm ridden pile of chestnuts, foul of dame judi dench....

i simply answer the door in full leather fetish wear to any 8 year olds and tell them to come back later as its not convenient "as im indulging in a heavy S&M session with the wife"....that usually works..

I never did let my kids go out harassing the locals. It's not a positive addition to the celebration calendar in my view - it's drummed into kids not to accept sweets from strangers and then one day a year parents send them out on a mission to do just the opposite

Mate.I remember one of the last halloween,s before I came over here. I was walking home from the offy down Harlington High Street. There was a familiar scene of the mum waiting at the gate with a pram while her slightly older children were trick or treating. Obviously the houseowner was'nt playing ball because the kid( about 10 I recon ) was kicking f'ck out of the door ,shouting kick or f'cking treat ,kick or f'cking treat in a hybrid Irish accent.Yes the Pikeys were in town...
I had a go at the Mum to sort her kid out ..Got a mouthful and had to take a little detour so they didnt know where I lived..

May I recommend Richmond & East Sheen Cemetary - dug a few graves there on my first OE!
Couple of actors there - Roy Kinear & Fulton Mackay from Porridge.

Have you ever been to Abney Park cemetery over in Stoke Newington? If you haven’t you should do as it’s an amazing place and there are plenty of decent boozers nearby for afterwards.

Halloween is now becoming the official start for our Christmas Season.
We offer different foods above and beyond our usual tripe, including a selection of real eyeball soup, fried brain in garlic and chilli served on a bed of red stained spinach and my favourite; death's desire. A mix of heart, lungs & liver cut up small and fried in lots of onions and spices. Comes out looking like a doner kebab, only much tastier.
We do have a pumpkin soup with black dye in it to look ghoulish, and our side bread is cut into the shape of a hand.
Just good clean fun to titillate the guests who seem to really enjoy the lengths we go to. Halloween has really taken off in London, with most shops recognising the business opportunity it represents.

It's not what you've got; it's where you stick it.

I'll take your word for that.

I can't stand offal at the best of times (It's the texture and taste...and the thought come to that) but I would definitely draw the line at Lugs... I'd probably eat Eels before that, and they freak me out. (Well they did when I used to try to unhook them).

Halloween is mental over here in Ireland. Hate it. Another overblown commercially hijacked idea from the United States of Disneyland detracting the event from all its original beginings and forcing the world to follow suit. I remember the days when we just used to sit around in darkened rooms and tell spooky tales and perform daft 'supernatural' acts around the house to try and scare us witless. Now you get dressed up brats coming to your front door demanding sweets. Yeah, take them you little mugs, for your teeth will rot and you'll get fat and you will look scary all year not just on 31/10!!

Oh Christ, Christmas is just round the corner too. Wish I could hibernate at this time of year.

There aint half been some clever bastards.

I can take or leave the full on US traditions - I've been involved with them before and it can be fun, but I draw the line at sending children out begging.

On the other hand I have got a Halloween pub gig tonight with a function band I play in. The pub's the local for most of the band members and we've played there a lot and have a great rapport with the regulars there and usually bring a big crowd. So tonight I'm especially looking forward to putting on a bit of make-up and playing the Ghostbusters Theme, Thriller, Monster Mash, Werewolf in London, etc. on top of the usual Reggae Ska Rock, Funk and Soul set.

The trick-or-treating has pretty much taken hold. My kids don't do it and I'm not keen because it feels like a fake tradition that undermines Guy Fawkes Night [which is what we really have instead.] Though kids used to beg for "penny for the guy" so overall the total amount of begging hasn't changed much.

Funnily enough was chatting to my dad the other day and he was talking about Hop-tu-naa - which is the Manx equivalent - and that it was more of a New Year's Eve sort of thing, bit like that quote in DD's post. But as he never brought me up to it - probably a bit pointless being the only house in West London celebrating Hop-tu-naa in the 1970s I suppose - it's not really part of my tradition.

Trouble is with anything the yanks do is that it turns into commercialised plastic cr*p for the supermarkets to sell.

I'd regularly walk through that cemetery in the dead of night as it was a cut through to my house.

I totally agree. Big corporations seem to have made the convenient (and cost-saving)assumption that any country where English is the official langauge is culturally identical to the US. Err, I don't think so. Grrrrrr
