Away at the Amex — Info for Rangers Fans 07:52 - Mar 6 with 11565 viewsBrightonEye

Just to clarify a few things for anyone coming down to the Amex on Tuesday.

For most away fans the easiest and best option by far is to come by train. You’ll save money by booking a return ticket to Haywards Heath or Shoreham by Sea. From there, the rest of the journey on to Brighton and the change for Falmer is all within the free travel zone that’s covered by your ticket.

If you’re driving, the club’s Travel Guide and Video (on the seagulls.co.uk website, under the Fans tab) include essential info on the free park-and-ride arrangements, plus the nearby Bridge car park, where limited space (costing £15) is available on the day. If coming down via the A23 I’d choose the Mill Road park-and-ride — but it gets full very quickly, so best to arrive by 6.15.

If you prefer to avoid Brighton altogether, you can park at Lewes station (costing £5) and get the train to Falmer — one-stop, 5 minutes, no charge, because it’s in the free travel zone. And waiting at Falmer for a train back to Lewes is often quicker than queuing for the park-and-ride buses.

Falmer station is right beside the ground and, these days, getting away isn’t a problem. Leave on the final whistle, queue for maybe 15-20 minutes, and the train gets you into Brighton in 8 minutes flat. Then, loads of good pubs near the station, plus everything that naughty old Brighton has to offer! Or you could of course just get on the first train back home…

If you do have time, and fancy being sociable post-match, a great way to dodge the queues is to stick around. But no need to stay stuck in the away end. All the concourse bars stay open — with away fans very welcome. West Stand Lower is the biggest — and a lot warmer than the somewhat draughty away concourse! The North Stand bars always stay open till 11pm.

As for catering, the locally produced Piglet’s Pantry pies are pretty special, and unlike anywhere else, the away bars always stock a real ale from the visitors’ locality. So look out for your local brew.

Most people find that the Amex is a pretty relaxed and friendly place. Hope you have a good trip, and enjoy the match!

Wifey and i are leaving at lunch time so may just find somewhere to park in Brighton and go for a pre match nibble before catching the train to the ground, any advice on good eating establishments close to Brighton station with decent parking would be handy Brightoneye.

If more fans were this helpful we would probably take more away.

Going down early afternoon on the rattler.
We're staying in the hotel next to the station.
Not looking forward to the journey to the ground.
My mate who works for Brighton says the travel to and from Brighton is a terror.
He wants to leave the game 15 min early to meet up to get back to Brighton.
I ain't willing to do that and by the sound of it the old bill won't allow it anyways.
We'd better get a result!

Queens Road opposite the station is a good place to start for food and drinks. Plenty on the side roads off of it.

There is a Spoons for away fans too which is not too bad. The pubs right next to station are home fans only, controlled by doormen.

As for parking it's very hit and miss and can be expensive. Maybe better to avoid the sea front and go up the surrounding streets. Further you are from the sea, the cheaper assuming it's not residents only.

Go early (an hour before the start) and the trains are better. OK by London standards.

Even if driving, I would go to a railway station and train in for evening matches.

Leaving, 20 minutes wait for the trains and then packed like sardines for 8 to 10 minutes.

Crowds are a bit less for evening games but the trains are not so good as fans arrive later.

Not sure what the gate will be, but it might be full. Capacity just over 30,000, but there might be segregation areas so it will be less. Also, football on TV which might keep some people away as there is a cold chill on the coast.

Hundreds of home tickets still on sale but the OK ones are £42. Cheaper tickets at the ends.

Lewes station was already pretty full when we parked an hour ago. Dont know if it will empty a bit with commuters then fill up again with football supporting cars.

Now enjoying a pint of the black stuff with a few early arriving R's fans

'That 20 minutes queuing time is a maximum'

I left on the final whistle and it was 40 minutes later that the train pulled out of Falmer. The earlier reports of it being a complete mare to get out of, we're proved correct.

I can only assume that the OP is what passes for a sense of humour in Brighton.

I did wonder. It's one of the major flaws in the stadium, but given they lost the Goldstone such trangresses have to be permitted and tolerated. 28,000 on a Tuesday night aint bad.

Do you mean you were waiting 40 minutes at Falmer for the special train they were running for QPR fans direct to Victoria - which in any case wasn't scheduled to leave until 10.15 or so ?

Or are you saying you had to queue for 40 minutes to get on one of the regular shuttle trains that depart Falmer every 10 minutes for Brighton?

Which was it?

Got to say I only got back 45 mins ago and I'm staying in a hotel on the sea front in Brighton. Getting to the game from Brighton station was a mare. A twenty min wait in a queue of around 4000 and a train consisting of 3 carriages arrives to take us to the stadium. Pathetic.

Waited around and had a beer in the stadium after yet still queued for twenty mins for a train. How they suffer that every home game I don't know.

Ok, Loftus Road is past it's use as a modern stadium but we are truly blessed for transport links.

complete nightmare getting away from there tonight. parked the car at lewes station. Putting the misery of gifting 3 points to brighton to one side, we waited 40 odd minutes to get a train one stop - and believe me, we were pretty close to the front of a huge queue as we left the moment the second goal went in. Train every ten minutes? my hairy arrrrssse there is.
brighton eye - are you paid by the club as some sort of Dr Goebbels propaganda machine? most of the home supporters around us were laughing when we said we had been told they were every ten minutes....
Let's hope when/if we build a new stadium, it does not come as a soulless, poorly serviced, concrete bowl like that place is.....

Didn't the trains run on time under Goebbels and friends?

People love a moan, but after a bit of a wait, they laid on a direct train back to London, which ain`t bad. And I loved the stadium- sleek, stylish and with a bit of grandeur- it has great acoustics, too, and their fans made an incredible racket at times. I`d love something similar if we can ever actually afford anew stadium- maybe we could use the same architect. Credit where it`s due- Albion look like a club going places.

Took the special train back to London option - queued for a while, probably 30 minutes, but there was a refreshment thing for tea etc and the train wasn't too full and shot back to Victoria in 45 minutes with one stop. Overwhelmingly positive experience, but looking back up to the bridge for those waiting to go back to Brighton and for the other trains it did look a bit of a mare.

Good luck to you. It was a nightmare to exceed all nightmares on trains anywhere. It took me two hours to travel 12 miles packed liked sardines on trains and in queues. The railways are taking the piss.

You train boys had it lucky ! You should have tried the Park & Ride for Mill Road. They seemed to manage the park bit alright but forgot the ride. We were at the front of the queue waiting for the buses to recycle back to the ground and were still there +30 mins after the final whistle. Anyone who was behind us could well still be there now.

The special train to London is a great idea, but why wasn't it publicised beforehand? Was everyone who wanted to get on it able to get on it?

Traffic problems on M25 so left at 9 and took A road to Dorking and onto Brighton which was good. Got to Mill Road P&R at 5.30 and went to Harvester. Back to Mill Road at around 7.10 and got on bus straight away.

Traffic very busy and then bus broke down within sight of stadium. Driver wouldn't let us off but after someone opened emergency door had a brisk 10 minute walk and got into ground just in time for teams coming out.

Not being feint-hearted we stayed until end and then got out of ground quickly as most others had gone. Had to queue for about 30 mins for bus and we were relatively near the front. Got back to P&R around 10.20 and after getting out of Mill Road an easy drive back on M23/25.

Nice ground and looks like built with possible inexpensive expansion. Agree looks like they are going places and judging by the number of coaches parked outside, they have a huge one club catchment area.

P&R not too bad but wouldn't want to do it every week. Must be awful when it is pouring with rain etc.

seems to me that no one ever takes the travel to and from these new grounds into consideration. Reading and Brighton were a nightmare, not sure i can be bothered to brighton again escpecially for a night game. you know its bad when you see the home fans legging it to the trains with 10mins left

Left on 85 mins just as the goal went in.

Managed to get on a train at 9.50pm or so back to Brighton but fck me it was painful. If you had kids/elderly/women/disabled etc they would simply die in the crush or under the carriage wheels.
