I think this fundamentally goes back to the lack of coaching that we clearly don't do with this team. The midfield as a unit lack basic awareness and movement, even Barton who has played on the continent was guilty of this time and again. Every time we got the ball on either flank, both Barton and Krancjar were stationary behind one or two of their midlfielders and at times Hoilett and Traore were the same. This points to a complete lack of tactical awareness. Take their impressive midfielder - Danny Williams (?) every time he had the ball and played it, his first thought was to move into space and to support his fellow players, the link up with McCleary was fanstastic however McAnuff was dreadful but still, their first thought was about movement and getting into space and exploiting our distinct lack of movement. This has been the problem on and off since around November time and was the problem for a large part of last season. Hoilett improved on his pathetic display against Derby and did carry a threat and after all got Gorkss sent off, however he still lacks the movement to make him a potent threat on that right wing and I don't think he would cut it in the hole either as he just doesn't move intelligently enough. This must be a Rangers problem as Krancjar, even for his lack of pace and acceleration has completely forgotten his awareness and movement. Maybe this is where Morrison will help, maybe he can play alongside Henry in the next couple of games and provide some much needed movement. I'd play Henry (just foul, block, defend and protect that back four), Morrison alongside, with Krancjar in the hole and one up top. We aren't good enough to play 4-4-2 as we don't have the energy and movement for it. | |
