Could Caceres Be The Man

Last week we told of how Saints might be looking at signing former Juventus central defender Martin Caceres on an out of contract deal, now it seems that it might happen.

Sky Sport Italia is claiming that Caceres is already at Southampton and undergoing a medical after failing to agree terms with AC Milan.

Apparently Caceres wanted around 250k euros (£215 k) as a signing on fee for a six month contract plus 25k euros (£21.5 k) per game played but AC Milan baulked at paying this.

Saints need is far more desperate and given the circumstances what would equate to a basic of around £23k per week plus roughly the same again per game would be small change for Saints to plug a short term gap and would not be much of a risk financially given the players injury record.

One thing is for sure Saints will struggle given the players they have available in the centre of defence at the moment and the only option they have is to find a player who is out of contract.

How fit Caceres actually is will be another question, but Saints could get him up to a reasonable level in a fairly short period of time assuming that he has a core fitness level.
