Saints In For Scott Dann ?

According to some press reports Saints are chasing Blackburn Rovers defender Scott Dann for a fee believed to be in excess of the £6 million the Lancashire club signed him for last August.

At 25 Dann looks to fit the profile of player that Saints would be in the market for, still young enough that he would command a decent sell on fee in the next four years and with Premiership experience to boot.

The 6ft 1 defender joined Rovers virtually on transfer deadline day last year and was then a regular in the side, making 28 appearances in total and scoring 1 goal in the process.

Prior to his move to Ewood Park, Dann started his career with Walsall as a junior and spent four years at the Bescot Stadium (or whatever its called these days) where Danny Fox was a team mate, his form for the Saddlers earned him a move to Coventry City for a fee believed to be in excess of a million where again Fox was a team mate, he spent a season and a half at the Ricoh before Birmingham City came calling and the Sky Blues made a handsome profit on their investment with the transfer fee this time aroiund £3.5 million, at St Andrews Dann once again excelled and was first choice when fit, unfortunately he damaged a ham string in the Blues Carling Cup semi final win over West Ham and required surgery that kept him out for the last three months of the season, although Birmingham would win the trophy, with Dann missing their league form collapsed and they slumped to relegation.

On the last day of the transfer window last season Blackburn Rovers signmed him for a £6 million fee, again he was a virtual ever present at Ewood Park, only injury keeping him out of the side and what an injury that was, after scoring his only league goal for Blackburn in a 2-1 home defeat against West Brom it was discovered that Dann had ruptured a testicle, an ailment that kept him out of the side for five weeks.

Whether this is another transfer rumour or has more substance to it is yet to be seen, but certainly Dann fits the Southampton model for signings and has the experience in the Premiership that we need.
