On the basis of pre-season/the current squad, where will we finish this season?
at 21:05 27 Jul 2024

I'm thinking top half. We are not a top 6 side. We are going to lose plenty of games, and we are going to play badly in a few of them too. Are squad is missing a few key players. But we are building on what we achieved from February onwards and moving in the right direction. Losing 1-0 at Reading is perfectly consistent with that by the way. We are the team that won away at Leicester and tonked Leeds at home but had Wednesday and Huddersfield take 10 points off us. The main difference is we aren't going to give anyone a 14 game head start this time.

If we're trying something out and it isn't working, this is the best time to find out.

I wasn't at the game, but having seen the highlights I agree with a large number of you that our players aren't up to a league season in the Premier League. Assuming that Sours represent typical opposition we'll face this season, I fear we'll struggle.

Given that a) Nourry has a brain and b) Marti wouldn't stick around otherwise, either Bristol City have paid a lot of money for Sinclair, or we're about to sign two really good strikers (especially as Lyndon won't be at his best until September I suspect). I'm thinking probably both.

We're an English club with a Spanish manager. Whatever happens, we win.

Got to ask. When you say behaviour, are you referring to indolence, absence, and general disregard for the honour it is to play football at any professional club, never mind ours, or has there been other even more unbecoming behaviour from him that isn't common knowledge (or that I have simply missed)?

Brilliant news.

Worst case scenario: a chunk taken off our wage bill for this season.

Best case scenario: he enjoys himself there and comes back a player who is either useful to us or worth paying for to someone else.

We were able to hang on? How much stoppage time did we have to grind out? Were we good at game management?

I'm wondering if perhaps the 3pm block doesn't affects Football League attendances very much, but it maybe does affect lower Premier League attendances a bit.
Most Football League fans only take a casual interest at most in the Premier League, probably through the eyes of their children who might be a bit more into it through trends followed at school, before they form an attachment to their local club.
Premier League attendances though include a lot of tourists and occasional spectators who just want to take in a premier league game when convenient, but also have an attachment to a particular big club they have chosen to adopt off the telly. Those are the people likely to give Palace vs Bournemouth a miss in order to watch Arsenal vs Liverpool on TV.
League away fans might be affected a bit, choosing to watch their own team on telly instead of making a long journey, even for a 3pm game, but I suspect it's the Premier League clubs who gain most from the 3pm block.

Yeah, it can't be good for morale if he misses pre-season and then waltzes in a bit later on more money. A few days ago I was feeling reassured that his departure hadn't been announced and he also hadn't been training with anyone else. Joining the squad in Girona a few days late after finally agreeing a new contract would have been fine. Now I feel it's too late for anything good to come out of that.

It also says a lot that other clubs with more money/headroom than we have haven't decided to swoop in and pay him what we can't. After a few days, that's no longer a sign that he's turning them down.

Eventually he may realise what a realistic wage demand looks like and some other club will be the beneficiary of his more fitting expectations in future, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it will be us.

As long as we finish fitter than we started, it doesn't matter very much.

I think I am going to like seeing it on the team, and on other fans. I'm not feeling inclined to buy it for myself though. I just don't like it as much as other recent away kits I have already got.

Sunderland have appointed someone at last. Don't know who. Don't really care. It isn't Marti.
