I was walking the dogs this morning and for some reason my mind wandered to ‘Uncle Val.’ For so long he was the saviour of Blackpool, but was it all an illusion? While his proceedings against Oyston did the job we all craved, when you look at the cold facts, he invested £6m and walked away with 30. Not a bad rate of return in anyone’s eyes. Were all his meetings with certain high profile fans and his professed love of Blackpool just a way of strengthening his legal case? Were we taken for patsies and fell for the dream because we were desperate for change? I can’t help feeling if his bond with the Pool was so strong he would have found a way to buy the club. As it is he’s just a multi millionaire that’s just that bit richer. Have we been mugged off? |

I flew back from the US last night on Icelandair, with a change in Reykjavik and probably realised for the first time the global nature of the Premier League. The flight to Manchester was full to the rafters of Icelanders wearing either Liverpool or MU shirts. The flight time was 2 hrs 10 mins so I guess when you think of it, probably less of a journey than many home based fans. |

Just watching Liverpool v Southampton and it’s been bugging me all game. Why do all clubs feel the need to move away from their traditional colous? Purples, lime green, orange and pinks - it’s just not cricket. Even home kits annoy me. Man Utd, with black cascading down their red shirt to black shorts. Where did that come from? Maybe I need another another IPA and chill a bit. |

Having slept on it, I must say yesterday ranked with the best of away days. It didnt start on such a positive note. We arrived at the ground at 2.40 to be greeted with a 100 yard queue for the one open pay gate. Tempers were frayed to say the least, with a number of Pool fans being refused entry after verbal altercations with over zealous stewards. As we finally made it into the ground 5 mins after kick off, a second pay gate opened to a chorus of sarcastic cheers.
First impression once inside was surprise at the great vocal away following. Secondly the large stadium was unusually full for a team languishing at the foot of the table. As we squeezed into a couple of the last remaining seats, it felt like an away day of old, with an electric atmosphere and tinge of stale booze in the air. Nice to see so many young fans given the tribulations of recent years. Plenty of middle age Stone Island also on show.
Sharp in the tackle, with Spearing leading by example, Pool looked like a completely different team from recent weeks. The 4-4-2 worked straight out of the coaching manual - Fonz and Feeney causing havoc down the wings, Nottingham and Bola overlapping dangerously, Virtue and Spearing imperious in the middle. With Tilt back and Heneghan in sharp form, the defence was a blend of coolness and controlled aggression. We took control of midfield early and bossed the first half with ease. Evans was a bit wasteful at times but turned well on the edge of the box to put in a great cross for Gnanduillet to head us into the lead. Play continued with Pool dominating and Fonz in particular playing out of his skin. My quest for a half time beer was quickly ended with one glance at the refreshment queue.
Bradford came out for the 2nd half with a bit more fire in their bellies, clearly having had a blast from Bowyer at half time. Play started off pretty much end to end, with Bradford looking more dangerous and Pool defending stoutly when required. A dangerous Bradford attack was superbly broken up by Spearing and Virtue picked up the loose ball and ran the full length of the pitch before lashing in Pool ‘s second with a piledriver. Lots of credit goes to Evans and Gnanduillet for diagonal runs which created the space for Virtue. Bradford came back fighting and won a dubious penalty as Tilt went to ground in a 50/50 for a loose ball. Mafoumbi, booked for his protest at the decision, then made a superb save to push the ball round the post. This was probably the pivotal moment in the game, at 2-1 momentum would likely have swung the way of the Bantams. From then on it was all Pool. It was great to see Pool keeping pressing, not content with holding on to their 2 goal lead. A good Nottingham cross and Gnanduillet header gave us our third, from then on it was an exhibition match. We continued to knock the ball about in a manner reminiscent of the days of Olly. Fonz then took out half a dozen Bradford players with a mazy run and inch perfect pass to set Taylor up for our 4th. Cries of ‘Gary,Gary what’s the score’ rang around the ground, as Bradford fans started to stream out of the ground. The Bradford consolidation at the end was a shame for Heneghan, Tilt and Mafoumbi in particular, as all had put their body on the line to keep a clean sheet. To me it looked like the cross came in too easily and Nottingham lost his man at the far post.
On the final whistle, the Pool players to a man came over to applaud the away support, most who had remained in the ground to return the applause. The walk back to the car past grumbling Bradford fans was uneventful and the drive home pleasingly easy. On reflection the day after, it’s hard to think of a better away day. I’m sure we’ll play better teams before the end of the season, but if we show the same blend of skill and passion we must have squeak of making the playoffs.

I see the mob from up the M61 are also rather disatisfied with their owners. A bit of originality with the protest would have been nice, but I suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
It all seems a bit ungrateful to me. I remember reading about 12 montsh ago the owner wrote off a debt of £170m. The Club is now being run on prudent lines to avoid a reoccurence, but it appears that isn't good enough for the 'long suffering fans.'

I don't know if anyone saw the tribute to Diane Oxbury on BBC North West Tonight? Really moving, most of her colleagues were in tears and it was difficult to watch . She seemed a very genuine and caring person. It feels strange to be upset for someone you've not met and until today, knew little about. I guess in a small way, she's been part of many people's life for a long time. RIP Diane. |

The book thread got me thinking of a couple of lesser known pieces of history that to me are pretty incredible. I was in New York in Oct and visited Liberty State Park. In the little museum in the old railway station there were some artefacts from an explosion on Black Tom Island. Apparently there was a munitions store on a small man made island that was blown up by German spies. The US were selling munitions to both the German and Allied forces, but a British naval blockade meant only the Allied armaments were getting through. German spies, possibly dock workers of German heritage, took exception and blew the island to smithereens. It was one of the contributory factors to the US entering WW1. This led me onto the other piece of history which I was totally unaware. The Zimmermann Telegram was a diplomatic communication intercepted by British Intelligence in which Germany pledged to handover part of Texas to Mexico, if Mexico supported the German war effort. America was so incensed when it became public knowledge it was the final straw. I’d always thought the sinking of US shipping and of the Lusitania was the deciding factor. |

On tonight’s Talk Sport, Adrian Durham said although he understood Blackpool fans have been through tough times, he believed we had spoiled Solihoor Moors big day out. Last night’s attendance was only half the one at the home game a week or so earlier. It’s a good example of pundits not really getting why fans stay away and of the boycott hurting more than just Oyston. |

I can't drive anywhere near Deepdale without breaking out into an extreme case of tourettes. Some of my best mates are North Enders, yet even on a generous day, not one part of me wants PNE to win a single point (well possibly in a boring goalless draw against Bolton). I do admit to feigning a bit of sympathy when they've missed out yet again in the play-offs, but that's as close as it gets. Is it just me? |

Is it just me, or is it really annoying when the away team plays in an obscure kit just for the sake of it? Why are Watford playing in green tonight against Everton, their yellow kit is far less of a colour clash. If not that, it’s Man City playing in mauve or Chelsea in sky blue pink with yellow polka dots. The world’s gone mad. |

Much to the annoyance of my family, I can’t bring myself to throw anything Pool related away. The upper reaches of my garage are littered with old scrapbooks, programmes and signed shirts through the decades. My proudest possession is an old wooden rattle (painted a tacky shade of orange) that attended the 53 cup final. It was given to me by a lovely old barmaid at the Golden Ball in Poulton. After her husband died, she wanted it to have a good home. Is it just me that hangs on to what most sane people would consider junk? |
