Esox's post reminded me of this extraordinary war poem The Parable of the Old Man and the Young by Wilfred Owen
So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went, And took the fire with him, and a knife. And as they sojourned both of them together, Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father, Behold the preparations, fire and iron, But where the lamb for this burnt-offering? Then Abram bound the youth with belts and straps, and builded parapets and trenches there, And stretchèd forth the knife to slay his son. When lo! an angel called him out of heaven, Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, Neither do anything to him. Behold, A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns; Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him.
But the old man would not so, but slew his son, And half the seed of Europe, one by one.
It's only 3 years ago that he was playing for us but it seems like an age. He's a more than 1 in 3 striker over his career but at 33 can he still do it in the Championship? We'll just have to wait and see.
The case looks like it will rumble on further but that the transfer rules of Fifa go against European Union laws, as the EU’s top court has now ruled, must mean changes will have to be made.
Westlin' Winds by the wonderful bard of Scotland, Robert Burns, is my favourite autumn poem. It's a fantastic song too, sung by many folk singers down the ages.
Now westlin winds and slaught’ring guns Bring Autumn’s pleasant weather; The moorcock springs on whirring wings Amang the blooming heather: Now waving grain, wide o’er the plain, Delights the weary farmer; And the moon shines bright, when I rove at night, To muse upon my charmer.
The partridge loves the fruitful fells, The plover loves the mountains; The woodcock haunts the lonely dells, The soaring hern the fountains: Thro’ lofty groves the cushat roves, The path of man to shun it; The hazel bush o’erhangs the thrush, The spreading thorn the linnet.
Thus ev’ry kind their pleasure find, The savage and the tender; Some social join, and leagues combine, Some solitary wander: Avaunt, away! the cruel sway, Tyrannic man’s dominion; The sportsman’s joy, the murd’ring cry, The flutt’ring, gory pinion!
But, Peggy dear, the ev’ning’s clear, Thick flies the skimming swallow, The sky is blue, the fields in view, All fading-green and yellow: Come let us stray our gladsome way, And view the charms of Nature; The rustling corn, the fruited thorn, And ev’ry happy creature.
We’ll gently walk, and sweetly talk, Till the silent moon shine clearly; I’ll grasp thy waist, and, fondly prest, Swear how I love thee dearly: Not vernal show’rs to budding flow’rs, Not Autumn to the farmer, So dear can be as thou to me, My fair, my lovely charmer!
Two football sites have rated Madsen as our best player last night. I'm not as critical as some of him but I did find that surprising. I'd have rated Saito our best player.
I used to give up alcohol for 6 weeks at a stretch each year. It's a good thing to do, particularly if you feel the need to get a grip on your drinking. These days I keep drinking at home to a minimum and just imbibe at games or when out with friends.
I find this very odd. He always looked very promising when I saw him play, seemed well thought of by the club and he's a QPR fan. He's better than a 7th tier player. I can only think something has gone wrong behind the scenes for the lad.
If true many other players with a permanent contract would drop their performance levels. I don't think that's true of Dembele or most others who want to carve out a good career in the game.
Dembele is a young player - only 21 - getting used to football at this level for the first time, in a team with other young players doing the same. He's certainly the most exciting of the new bunch and has real potential to be a very good player for us.
I find Nourry pretty impressive and rather irritating in equal measure. He appears to be clear in what he wants to do and has innovative ideas. But some of those ideas such as not publishing players' contract details are annoying.
I think he does have tendencies towards control freakery and I'd expect that to get him into difficulties at times. But I'm happy to take the rough with the smooth for now.
I didn't understand Nourry's point regarding agents and contract lengths. Is he saying agents won't divulge the contract details to an interested club? If so I wish he'd just have said so.
Parking at Loftus Road advice for a quick get away after by Ragingbull19329 Sep 11:53 I am going to the Millwall game and just wanted to get some parking advice for a quick get away afterwards as I have a family event in Greenford at 3pm. I don't want to leave the match before the end. Is there anywhere within a 10 to 15 minute walk of Loftus Road where you can get away quickly? I guess this would involve avoiding the A40 and the Uxbridge Road which is going to be difficult. All suggestions appreciated!
