One of the best signings we could make this window
at 17:34 2 Jan 2025

really depends how much its for does it not. If it was say 3.5m euro would we sign him then. I like him but I'm not sure I'd want to pay in excess of 750k

In the form of his life at the moment, but is evident in the last few weeks is that he has gone from bombing down the wing and banging it in to an area to slowing down at the right time and raising his head to pick someone out. Always worked hard, carries the ball well but you would guarentee there would be nothing at the end of it, or missed the right opportunity. Needs to keep it going now. That wing position needs be delivering 10-15 goal contributions a season

The Formation v Watford
at 19:42 1 Jan 2025

We've been set up this way since the International break IMHO 4-1-4-1 / 4-3-3 hybrid even when Madsen has been playing with the 10 becoming an 8/10. Morgan plays it best as he is the more complete player offensive / defensively

How have things changed so drastically in last ten games
at 18:00 1 Jan 2025

I think we have changed our tactics since the international break, it was much more of a 4-2-3-1 start of the season since the break its more 4-1-4-1 / 4-3-3 with the 10 role deeper in this new fangled 8/10 and the left winger been given freedom to move into ten when attacking. We've become very right side focused with the ball and very solid without it. We've also had a bit of a luck both in game terms and discovering that an 18 and 19 year old who were very much "fringe" at the start of the season have become important key players.

Hoops vs Hornets Match Thread

Just back, great performance Watford were very dangerous. I've always been very frustrated by him but top respect to Paul Smyth, one of his best games for the club and the thing that is so apparent in recent weeks is that he is lifting his head and therefore making better decisions and is so much a better player for it.

I thought Ashby had an excellent 2nd half is best for the club.Frey really bullied them but was on a tightrope 2nd half for a second yellow. Everyone else great especially Dunne, Morgan, Field and Varane.

Not sure what their 2nd was disallowed for other than the ref got the corner wrong and knew it so it was always going to be a free kick

Anderson made a real difference first half off the ball with his pressing and positioning did nothing spectacular but helped us stay high in their half

I thought we had a really good first half, but we look shattered after 55 minutes, and I felt they were always going to get one back. Lack of leadership in the game in the end, I think if Field and Smyth were able to stay on we might have seen that out, I suspect Varane may be getting the hairdryer from Dunne and I'm pretty sure Cook would have been giving Nardi both barrels for continuing to pissball from the back in the last 15 minutes. I thought both Ashby and Anderson had good games. Dunne or Nardi MOTM

The King's speech?

As a parent of two high functioning autistic teenagers, I would agree the signs may be there. From the niche but super detailed interest in French football and establishing a website covering this through to the coms style. I would imagine he would come across as deeply impressive as he reals off some stats and details about some 3rd tier Portuguese player. There is not a thing my daughter at the age of 12 could not tell you about the Greeks and Roman gods at 13 she is studying biology a-level text books because she wants to be a doctor. But on the other hand she has little or no perception in reading people but expects everyone to be able to read her. Its not some savant ability it pure 10,000 hours and hyper focus on niche stuff.

There are levels to this stuff, my sons is quite mild, my daughters is very extreme with a whole load of other MH issues that come with it.

Sam Field on today's defeat
at 14:29 27 Dec 2024

I'd suggest they know exactly what went wrong but he is hardly going to come out and call out the defence playing too deep, Smyth not pushing forward enough, Fox and Pall getting done time and time again. They both made it quite clear these are things for the dressing room. When a manager calls out the players publicly it's usually when they are on the way out. His half time subs made it quite clear he understood

Just Back...
at 11:11 27 Dec 2024

We had a system, but because the defence was 10 -15 metres too deep (lack of confidence after they walked through us down the left in the first minute) it pulled the midfield back and they could press us. We could not press them without leaving a huge gap in the centre of midfield. All problems stemmed from the back 4. Saito and Smyth were playing practically as wing backs first half

A big part of the problem was both Smyth and Saito were too deep, we need Smyth offering the ball in behind but because the team got so deep whenever we got the ball we were just swarmed with no out to chase down. One of the changes second half was by bringing on Madsen he could drop into right midfield and that released Smyth to get forward without us being left wide open. Chair also is just more reliable in carrying the ball and coming deep. Love Saito but he needs a rest and we need to get Chair in as starter.

I dont think Morgan has played too much, he played the last game and half and was a sub for the two before that. Personally I would not play him away from home at all, he has little impact in the games he's started when we are away. I think Field at LCB is one thing but I dont want to see him at RCB. If Clark-Salter is struggling to play there as an experienced left footed CB I dont fancy an out of position left footed midfielder.

We need an LB, and a Forward. If we can have Hayden for nothing yes probably worth having but if we are having to pay those are big wages he is on

We weren't exactly putting in the yards at the start of the season either, in the last 2 months we've upped our intensity (and I guess if you dont have ball you are running more!)

Not sure Kolli can be held responsible I dont think he had a ball within 10 metres of him first half.

The mistake today was to play Fox and JCS as the CB pairing we got very deep, JCS could not playout when receiving the ball from Nardi. Paal did not turn up at all, (I hear he was ill, it showed). Fox was a disaster class again.

Because the back four were so deep so were the midfield, so we were miles of getting close to them off the ball (leaving huge space when Field Morgan attempted to press higher and when we had the ball, Smyth and Saito were receiving it in our third. 2nd half Ashby and Chair made a difference and Smyth and Field pushed further forward as did the whole team and they could only really get in behind Fox.

I think against Norwich we will see the back four as it ended with Dunne and JCS, Ashby RB and Fox or Paal LB. I think we will see Chair back and probably Frey starting, and frankly a draw will be a cracking result

Well it was a bit better 2nd half, I think Chair needs to start against Norwich. We can get away with Morgan Fox for 20-45 minutes but geez is he a liability the number of times there forwards ran in behind him, and that was even with us camped in our box at times.

I dont think we can afford Morrison and Cook out long term and we certainly can't play rope-a-dope without them so maybe we need to add centre back to the shopping list with left back and striker

When I saw the team sheet this is what I feared. Absolutely shocking at the back Fox and Pall a total liability no out ball, but they've been protected very poorly Varane, Smyth Dunne all dialling in worst performance of the season.

What are the options - go three at the back maybe 2 up top with Frey. Or take of one of Fox or Pall Put Jimmy in the middle and put Ashby on then Chair for Saito and Frey for Kolli. who knows its a mess

I think the 9 shirt is Kolli's now until it is not. Can't argue with the goal record, he lays the ball of well and will get stronger but because he has pace it will make the defensives drop deeper and give us room to play in front or enable us to get behind.

Re Chair at 10, Just like Eze before him I always thought he was better of starting on the left and drifting in, gets easily picked up by the holding midfielder who can man mark when central as he gets older I'd like to seem evolve into a Modric like 8
