Was Prestons goal totally against the morals of the game
at 09:28 22 Dec 2024

From a slightly different perspective, I was a little disappointed with Nardi. Perhaps he was a little distracted by seeing his captain go down in obvious agony and had one eye on that. But the shot was low and straight at him. It effectively went through him. For such an excellent shot-stopper it was unlike him to concede such a straightforward shot.

Wouldn't work here though as we pronounce ewe as 'yo' My nephew is an Ag Advisor and spent years working with sheep farmers around Aberdeen. Came home just before Covid and took a fair bit of stick for his 'posh' pronunciation of 'yo'

I disagree with you slightly Brian. Winning while playing badly is the sign of a good team when it happens OCCASIONALLY. However, since Norwich we have been playing consistently VERY poorly. Like you I am delighted to post the 4 points from Bristol City and Oxford. But to continue to perform like that is not only unsustainable, but unacceptable to the paying supporters, especially those in attendance and even more so when they travel the length and breadth of the country to follow them.
I feel Preston, like Oxford is absolutely a game we should be winning and probably need to win. But if we play as we have in the last couple of games, we will not. If feels like a 0-0 to me.

I think you have to be at least partially vertical in the first place to constitute a fall

The flip side of that, Clive is that we have earned points against other relegation teams (Cardiff in particular) whilst playing very poorly. I think (as per your glossary) it probably evens itself out over the course of the season

Andersen's form has been disappointing for sure, but hoping that's all it is, loss of form. He was a fine player last season, so doesn't become a bad one overnight. Got off to a flying start against WBA, then got that weird injury and hasn't really been the same since. Shame as with all the injuries and new signings he was actually one of our more experienced Championship players, despite only playing in it for a few months!
Certainly wouldn't be inclined to bin him off - we are a tad to quick too do that imo, not just with him, but several players. In Andersen's case, surely his efforts last season alone has earned him our respect and a little loyalty? We are supporters, I sometimes think the 'support' bit get lost, often when a player needs it most.

Didn't Toney do that in one of his first games back after his ban last January?

I don't like digging any player out, when I never played at any decent level at all. But I would not be inclined to accept that you cannot play the opposite side to your strong foot. Denis Irwin made a career out of it.
To say he has no ability is disingenuous, but coming from a Premier League club, he should be able to deal with Championship wingers. Also, he has played several games at LB now, so presumably he trains there during the week - he should be doing better.
(Beck scored for Blackburn today too

Took one nice cross from a corner late on V Oxford although seemed pole-axed after it. Was under no pressure mind. I don't think most foreign keepers are nearly as strong in the air as British keepers, they almost always punch a crossed ball if they come for it at all.

Not a rant but a serious question re the mindset of shooting and passing
at 14:32 12 Dec 2024

It's an interesting question and just based on last night alone, our passing was way off and often seemed to be 'blind' with no real target in mind. I actually thought Oxford's was much crisper and more accurate than ours and I think that was borne out by the official stats. If they had ANYTHING potent up front or on the wing they would have caused us some serious problems, mostly of our own making. Another thing that annoyed me last night was the number of lofted or looped passes which obviously takes longer to reach its target and more difficult to bring under control, thereby inviting more pressure from the opposition.
With regard to shooting, I don't think Marti is a fan of long range shots and therefore they may not practice them overly much. Both Smyth and Koki found themselves in similar positions, cutting in from the right and having a go for the top right hand corner of the goal. Smyth missed by a lot more than Koki but I think that is just due to less technical ability. Field's second goal was smoothly hit with his weaker foot from the edge of the box, but such accuracy from any of our players is a rarity I'm afraid.

We were shocking Brian, the worst I have ever seen, first half. The we upped the tempo for a few minutes, scored a very nicely manufactured goal and immediately reverted back to being poor. A piece of individual persistence by the Japanese lad, Lloyd listening to Field telling him to 'leave it' and a smooth finish with his weaker foot by Field, put the game out of their reach. Then back to being poor again. If we played like that v Norwich/Watford we would have been comfortably beaten. If we played like we did against Watford /Norwich, we could have scored six last night. The lack of consistency with much the same personnel is baffling.
The most gratifying thing is that we have beaten two of our relegation rivals while playing poorly - that didn't happen earlier in the season and goes down to Marti's pragmatism which Clive mentioned in the pre-view. It ain't pretty, but we are edging our way out of trouble.

I think that is the worst half of 'football' I have ever watched. And god knows between QPR, Sligo Roves and the RoI I have watched some shite over the last 55 years.
I have a toothache which is probably reducing my tolerance levels - but that was embarrassing

Have you ever wondered how the fairy got on top of the Christmas tree? Many thousands of years ago, Santa decided to ensure every house in the world had a Christmas tree. He commissioned all the fairies (the elves were busy making toys) in the world to distribute a tree to every house. It was difficult and tiring work trying to coordinate the project with so many different countries and time-zones, Santa was literally working day and night.
As a result, by the time the job was completed he was exhausted and not in good form. He had just sat down for a well-earned rest when a fairy knocked in his grotto door, to tell Santa he had one tree left over. She wondered what she should do with it. Santa was feeling a bit short-tempered and told her exactly what she could do with it.
That's how the fairy ended up on top of the Christmas tree

Agreed. In a perverse sort of way, all the injuries we have suffered might stand to us in the long run. We always knew the new players would need time to bed in and no doubt Marti was planning on doing that incrementally. That fact that he was forced to throw the majority in ' at the deep end' obviously has led to some disastrous results, but has also given these players vital Championship experience. They have had to literally 'learn on the job' and this could ultimately benefit the whole squad in the second half of the season when we have (hopefully) everyone fit. The most important thing was that we did not get cut adrift at the bottom and 5 points this week have ensured that did not happen. Still a lot to do, but much happier than this time last week

Festy is a decent player, although still surprisingly raw considering the amount of games he has played. More of a replacement for Chedoze than Coleman/Doherty I suspect
Let's hope we can keep him quiet today if he is on the left he will want to cut in for a shot on goal. You would imagine Dunne would be quite familiar with him

Illy and Willi at their best were unplayable at this level - but it was a very brief window.
