Even the interview immediately after the race with Sharron Davies was OTT. Was more of a trial by emotion than an interview.

On the other hand, silver for Tom Daley. Pleased for him. One of my sporting heroes.

Are we weak at left back??
at 20:34 28 Jul 2024

Are we going to need to move another centre back to full back ? JCS ?

(That's not as daft as it sounds)

Not interested. Most of the medals are won by the countries who spend the most on training their competitors and I have no interest in the marginal sports which competitors win because they are lucky enough to have the time and money to spend all year practicing. Doesn't suprise me that the games are susceptible to sabotage either given the money that is involved. Additionally, I'm not convinced that these major sporting events lead to a long term increase in participation at the level they should be. Grass roots level is where it's at.

The nature of the football has probably contributed to its own downfall. Italian football is possibly the most defensive in the world. Not conceding is the primary objective. Unfortunately, that is not what fans want to see.

Does it really need a role to be created for someone to administer how we play ?

I would have thought this would have been better achieved by having all the team coaches sat around a table once a week to talk about their experiences with it

Sounds like a waste of money to me

I think we'll miss him a lot. Made a big difference when he came on in games as an impact sub and I'm not sure we now have anyone that can do that. Saw last season, and in the Euro's that you need a striker with pace who can come on late in the game and out-pace a tiring back four.

Add in that crouch had to play with kiwomya up front and he almost saved us single handedly

3 at the back
at 13:31 6 Jul 2024

No. I don't think we will. I think Marti will continue with what worked well enough last season, i.e. 4-2-3-1. I don't think a lot of Spanish teams really do 3 at the back and wing backs and I think he has just got those players in so that the back 4 is comfortable with the ball and the right back is better going forward. I think he will stick with 4-2-3-1 at all times.

The really best bit about the UK Election
at 13:28 5 Jul 2024

The only saving grace is the rise of the Lib Dems. Maybe in 5 years when Labour has screwed up, interest rates and inflation have gone up and everyone is striking they will be the difference between Labour or the Tories winning a majority. Can't see Reform making any progress, they only won 4 seats on the back of nationalist jingoism. They are powder puff.

Agree with that but did you see the interview with Andy Murray afterwards ? Wow, that was powerful. I thought tennis was staid and boring but that was tear jerking.

We are not going to fix it now. Just have to hope that our huff and puff somehow gets us over the line against the Swiss. The players who came on did well. He needs to have more faith in his squad and remove players earlier if they are struggling, e.g. Trippier, Foden. I hope he is not going to take any credit for yesterday. That we won was completely in spite of Southgate and not because of him.

She is the personification of VAR. VAR come to life. Like just about everything else it is all about disempowering everyone. Everyone must do everything by the book.

Book recommendation
at 19:17 29 Jun 2024

Love a good book thread and read the first two books in CJ Sansom's Shardlake series thanks to recommendations on here (both very enjoyable).

I've recently been going through a non-fiction phase, partly as a result of an unsettled time I have been going through and the desire to understand more about human behaviour.

The last novel I read prior to that was Dracula (again on the advice of a friend) which was actually good and has some relevance to the world we live in now; the whole sad story being an allegory to the world of lust and carnal desires.

If you are not a great fan of long books Tom Hanks has written a book of short stories called Uncommon Type, some of which are quite good. There is one in there about a teenager coming of age (but not in the usual sense) on a surfing trip with his father. It is wonderful little story (titled 'Welcome to Mars) , only about 10 or 15 pages long but like I say, there is a life story in there. Well worth trying to find.

First new signing imminent... (n/t)
at 21:01 27 Jun 2024

Really telling comment from Marti on his signature: '“He is an attack-minded 'keeper. He tends to play high up the pitch so he can help us to cover a high defensive line if needed because he is aggressive in his positioning'

This is a huge departure from what we are ever used to. I don't think we have ever had a keeper who has been totally happy being an eleventh outfielder and contributing to help us overload at the back. Seny reluctantly maybe but Begovic, Smithies, Lumley, Kenny, forget it.

Well done, Marti !

It would be 0-0 and the inquisitions into the footballing crimes of Dykes and Southgate would go on for twice as long.

General Election Thread
at 17:26 25 Jun 2024

I'm not the biggest fan of Sadiq and detest the way he gets on a soap-box about things which are outside of his remit as the Mayor. However, I do think it's good for such a multi-cultural city as London to have an ethnic minority Mayor.

With regards to the general election we love shooting ourselves in the foot in this country, don't we ? Brexit was one big mistake and now that Rishi appears to have done a pretty good job of keeping interest rates low we are about to kick him out.

Feel sorry for those with loans/mortgages when inflation and interest rates go through the roof under Labour.
