Southampton v Swansea City : FA Cup Match day thread on 11:05 - Jan 9 by vetchonian

I have posted on this subject of player fatigue before.
I dint understand how professional athletes should suffer from it.
Compare 12 hr shitdt underground 5 days a week with what 12 hours between.
But it doesnseem to happen apparently

It’s relative isn’t it. The likes of Allen, Naughton and anyone else in our squad could play local football 5 days a week.

The lads who work 60 hour weeks at the steelworks, go out on the weekend, smoke and still play Saturday and Sunday are fit enough for the level they play at. It’s in no way comparable to competing against elite athletes who are at their peak fitness.

Nor is it comparable to bring a miner.

Clubs spend a fortune on medical science and a support structure for players, yet some supporters think they know better. If the science says they are ready to play they will be considered if not they won't. In cup games teams are often shuffled about, even those with stronger squads than us.

There has to be a question as to why some players are out so long after injuries, yes relapses happen and other injuries seem to happen as a player and medical team concentrates on the original injury; bad practices that lead to further issues or is it just a case of some injuries are impossible to recover from?
Bodde and Michu spring to mind.

700 tickets sold. Southampton moved their primary away end to the opposite corner of the ground at the start of the season.

My point re miners is about fatigue

Many folk worked and still do in hard physical jobs for at least 8 hours per day with just 16 hours recovery time and they do this 5 times a week. Professional sports persons train are monitored by sports scientists and have 80/90 minute peak "burst" during g which are moments of rest for mostly one occasion every 7 days. It's just a personal beef that pro sports persons claim fatigue when you consider what the bodies of these working folk go through.

I acknowledged Rayns about players looking washed out a Pompey and the West Brom games as we gad at best 3 days recovery time between each game.

Luke’s desire to be inflexible with his constant training patterns can’t help.

He keeps impressing on the players this will deliver results but how would anyone feel if their boss told them that for a year and still it wasn’t 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well not having your "inside" knowledge I can't answer that...but yes training methods will contribute but surely the sports science staff monitor those...but I still don't buy totally into player fatigue when compared with the physical work etc our forefathers did

How do you feel about different players having different training routine, faster players having lighter speed training compared with slower players working on their speed.
Notice the beginning of last season Piroe seemed to have worked on his headering, a case of players needing to work on their weaknesses while augmenting their strength, one size fits all or not?

That's how I would imagine things should be.
Individual training as you say looking to improve the weaker areas of a players game or strength.
Some group skills drills and tactical drills and some set piece practice.
Hasn't it been said that Sheehan is our set piece trainer?
Margetson defensive coach as well as the goal keeping coach?

Maybe there should be a different word for it.

Being knacketed from working yourself to the bone and not being at your peak, which elite athletes need to be to compete, are both versions of fatigue but not really the same thing. Both are valid though.

All fit players are in contention for selection. I repeat after 8 days without a game they will be ready. There is no need to “ rest “ anyone unless there are any ongoing niggling injury issues. Our squad isn’t strong enough to make too many changes without significantly weakening the team. I suspect that some regular starters might be on the bench but I hope I’m wrong.

Only an idiot would eat a turkey curry on Christmas day

Almost certainly will be, but Luke knows his situation, he will put out a strong ish side with as you say some on the bench. Would leave to see a couple of u21 players have a crack at Southampton.

Weaker areas, like players using their weaker foot and
Set pieces, like corners that beat the first man

Slow lofted corners into the six yard box for goalies and tall defenders to easily defend. We haven't got the tall players to load the box with so the loft ball to the back post is a good option if not used too often so it becomes predictable.
The low ones into the box need at least one player getting in front of the near post defender with a late run across them whipped in balls are harder to defend plenty of goals have been scored with glancing headers, balls to feet at the front post have to be a bit slow to enable our player to control them so they can lay them of back to the corner taker continuing into the box or laid off to a players late run to the edge of the box. We need to use different options

Cabango use to score quite a few goals at set pieces before Darling arrival, think they tend to get in each others way a bit, seems as if tjing have been sorted at our defensive corners(hope I haven't cursed that area now) but the main thing with our attacking set pieces now seem to be focused on not allowing Grimes take the corners and then making sure he is not the last man at them.

We have rotated Key, Tymon, Ronald and Eom as the last men, think Ronald is a big enough unit to cause more problems in the box than on the edge would have Grimes move to the edge during the set play given he could take more advantage as the ball drops loose with his strikes while always remembering to have another two players ready in case of counter attacks.
Like to see players from the opposite side of the pitch coming across to take inswinging corners but don't want the see the amount of work needed for the fullbacks to do it, especially with the amount of work including sprint in attack and defence of which is expected of them.
New and nippy left footed winger in the xfer window would help in that department. Please.

Interesting come back
You’re suggesting ordinary folk can’t run around a training field for a couple of hours then lunch then off to play golf or Xbox and on match day have every whim seen too.
Nah matey,no way
I will tell you now ,Bruno Fernandez, for example ,would not be be to work a week at a coal face ,cotton mill, or go out commercial fishing at 4am in all weathers .They wouldn’t be able to handle the trauma that NHS staff daily either ,nor do what firefighters do ,daily .
Looking at how quick they fall to ground, they’d be incapable physically of doing nothing like a “ normal job
If they have to drive to work ,it’s in a premium marque where they feel smug enough to drive through areas of deprivation to get to work without any sense of guilt at all.

Possibly .
If I could have been an oncology consultant, I wouldn’t thiugh as I don’t have the mental resilience to do what they do.
And oncology and other surgeons can also be fans .
In fact ,my missus consultant,Doug, was a mad keen Sunderland fan .
