I genuinely think that could be down to the standard of competition as much as, if not more than, the players themselves.

Whether a Category A academy is financially viable for us at the moment I don’t know.

If you look back on sales of academy players I would say yes.

If it’s five million a year, then any one of the three investors we have could fund it easily. If they are serious of course.

Medium to long term, I don’t think anything could benefit us more.

Am I right in thinking it doesn’t count towards FFP? May well be wrong there.

Isn't any money spent on the academy excluded from FFP, so one of the owners could sponsor the academy and if players are sold for a profit the money goes to the club?? Have we developed any player and sold them for a decent fee since we dropped a category, decent prospects want to go to a Cat One club. The player's we have sold for a profit were bought for the first team and developed through there.

Personally I think we can't afford not to be Category One.

I agree. It certainly pays for itself fairly quickly. I just wasn’t sure about the FFP

Can’t see it being included, I stand to be corrected …

How weird just had some academy info.

It is most certainly excluded.

No brainer then. Spend money on the academy, develop players like we used too and the whole of the player profit is excluded from FFP. I know it's not that simple but it's something to work towards.

Try telling that to the doom mongering PL fans, you are wasting your time mate.

Most of us are realists there are a few who will never be happy and there are those who have their heads in the clouds and see no wrong.

I am dead centre, I appreciated the PL years and now with the finances the way they are I think like you, we are punching above our weight.

I'm hoping and praying that the new regime will see that we aren't far off a side who will challenge for a play off place and will back williams, if he does get backed then we will be a real good side who will be there or thereabouts, if after being backed and he fails that's no problem, we can't all get promoted, we will have another crack.

Some people need to chill out and smell the coffee.

Ok - let’s go with what you’re saying. We can’t afford the biggest and best players - agreed.

But surely they should be match fit to last as long as the Sunderland and Leeds players? They went off a cliff after 65 minutes with 25 plus injury to go. Is that the fault of the board of the management team? Serious question.

I've mentioned in other topics that for one our bench is weak and therefore when subs are made our standard drops a bit and two because our squad is weak certain players are playing too many minutes, I suspect all the top teams we have played and lost to by one goal don't have this problem because their squads are bigger and stronger.

This thing about us not being fitter is b0llocks, every team does a massive pre season fitness program, if our squad wasn't fit you would see it at the start of the season, not in December.

I agree Keith, this forum is all about us fans expressing opinions .....what amazes me is at the start of the season before a ball was kicked several were convinced we were certain relegation candidates given out transfer dealings,as the season has gone on others have been negative even when we have won.
Yes today was disappointing to throw away the lead and end up losing all of a sudden we have gone from not conceding and not scoring goals to scoring goals yet conceding ....especially at home.
We are 10th we are in the top half of the table we are an average championship side.....how often have we heard on here the complaints over the last 8 years if the poor stewardship under the owners the lack of investment the rubbish transfer windows yet those same fans seem to expect us still to outperform.
It's frustrating especially on days like today....then it must be asked are the likes of Key and Tymon truly championship defenders? they both look good going forwards but they are both suspect at times in defence.
Of late Cabango and Darling have been open to criticism whereas earlier in the season they were immense and recognised on here as such.....lots made of the derisory new contract offers they had received....yet of late Cabango has been the subject of "libellous " claims of being a carthorse....Darling had a bit of mare today maybe the offers made reflected others opinions?
So.lets sack the manager.....yes he is learning
and who can argue we haven't seen an improvement in our play....we are scoring goals we are a more exciting watch......I'd love to hear from those who are calling for his head who they would suggest as a replacement..
Of late Williams has been criticised for subbing Franco he didn't today...also he switched our set up late in the
second half we went to 3 at the back with Grimes between Cabango and Darling pushing Key into midfield....so it.wasnt doing the same ...
Maybe we should take a step back and look at where we are given all that has happened.
For.me yes I'm gutted we.lost again and that second half we capitulated but we are where we should be mid tableish...and enjoying our football most of the time and pleased our manger recognises we are nit good enough too

As someone who now rarely attends, disillusioned as I am by the Yanks ownership, I agree with you here: I think Williams is doing better than expected giving the dearth of attacking talent available. If he finishes top half he'll have done well this season so not interested in judging him further til next season.

Martin Russell caused untold damage to this club....it's just that people gave him a free pass.

They went off a cliff at half time. Sunderland changed tactics and we couldn’t counter it. That’s 100% on Williams.

I don’t think anyone is saying he’s perfect, he’s clearly not. People are saying he’s punching above his weight with the squad and budget he’s got.

As for fitness, which does seem to be an issue most games, the likes of Franco and Allen regularly get replaced by worse players and our performance dips. Abdullai usually comes on our wide for 10 minutes and doesn’t really impact the game. It happens to other teams as well, but most of them have strong enough squads that there’s not a massive difference between the player coming on and the player he replaces, that’s a squad depth issue.

We have a real imbalance in the squad. We have players who regularly get substituted, players who seldom get substituted and players who never get substituted (not only Grimes) even in a three match week. Personally I don't think it's just fitness, more squad depth. There must be fatigue setting in over the season. We desperately need to rectify this in the next window, there are players on the bench who never get on, what are they doing here.

And this is the crux of the matter
It is not a matter of fitness and in many cases of ability
It is the simple matter of tactics employed by the coach and their implementation on the pitch .
It is the mental derailment that goes on in almost every game . Even when two goals ahead,we almost expect the opponents to be given a lifeline .
We played well for 45 mins against two top teams ,and literally threw both games away . We have a terrible Pompey side a two goal start .

We replicate mistakes , players ARE subbed as a matter of routine .

This is down to the coach .

Possibly our biggest negative,is the fact we have too much deadwood , two players unable through age to play anything more than 50 mins, two defenders that should never be at the club and a pantomime folly for a goalkeeper given a four year contract on good money yet one we can’t even loan out ,he’s that bad .

In that respect ,I feel for Williams ,but he needs to address the capitulations and talking doesn’t cure .

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

It’s definitely squad depth. Grimes is one of those players that suits playing as much as possible. Maybe Cullen is the same. Centre backs rarely get substituted which is ideal as we’ve only really got two of them without a huge drop in standards.

Everybody else would benefit from rotation IMO, but we can’t do it without really weakening the team. Ronald and Key both look very jaded early on in games sometimes.

It doesn’t surprise me we always seem to struggle at the end of three game weeks.

Doesn’t mean Williams is perfect or doesn’t make mistakes, but he is at a disadvantage to most other managers.

To most other managers? That's too broad a stroke, to those at the bigger clubs with more money then yes.

Williams has to try other players and maybe try players in their favoured position, by that I mean Abdullai who is no winger, his debut was at CM and that is where he could be tried. Put him in for Franco and see!

I just don't know what he's trying to achieve by playing him there. There have been numerous opportunities to play him CM but he chooses not to. Hence why I'm not convinced in any form by LW

That’s exactly my point. Most clubs in this division have bigger budgets and better squads than us. Not just the Leeds and Sheffield Uniteds, most of them.

I don’t disagree with your other point. Some of the substitutions don’t seem to make any sense. Most seem pre-determined. Can’t defend the manager if he gets that wrong.

Appreciate Abdullai is being played out of his position, but he also looks completely out of his depth. My guess is Grimes, Allen, Franco, Fulton - certainly Ollie Cooper and Cullen would do a better job shoehorned onto the wing. Possibly Williams just doesn’t trust him in such an influential position. We’ve discussed the gulf between U21 and first team football recently.

He is a midfielder, no pace for wing play nor the ability to beat a player.

His midfield performances have been far better.

On what I’ve seen of him, albeit on the wing, I wouldn’t put him in our midfield either.

Lack of pace and trickery is one thing, but he looks clumsy and uncomfortable in possession. Invariably goes down dead ends and ends up having to pass backwards. Not sure how he’d get on with less time and space if he played in the middle.

He has played excellently for the u21s but looks a different player in the first team, not doing the basics. I certainly wouldn't trust him in the middle.

I wouldn’t say it if we played a high tempo game but we don’t. We looked second best in strength and fitness to Cardiff at home and that was only in August
