Thought our keeper commanded his area well today and was shouting at the defence to push out. He was certainly more vocal than EEL - who to be fair only played half a game

The role of the captain goes far beyond their time on the pitch. Big Jim spoke out in defence of EEL in a post-match interview last season. I'd be very surprised if we saw a change.
His captaincy on the pitch, i.e. where it actually matters, was notable by its absence
On those grounds alone, he should have had it removed. I couldn't care less if he's a good guy on the training ground, he was part of the problem during our exit from the football league, and not just his playing performance
