Was thinking that if more teams adopted Gazball as we’ve seen in the last couple of matches, could it leave the ball left on the halfway line with both teams sitting deep in their own halves waiting for the other team to make a move?

Poll: Where will Clive put QPR in his new season preview

Its all quite simple really.
Ask yourself if you’ll be happy to see Josh Scowen in our midfield next season, or not.

Another example of stereotyping that is not based on any fact whatseover, or are you completly disinterested in reading anything that anyone else has written on this thread?

This is from Clive’s interview pre Wycombe in Dec 20. I’ll let an actual fan with 8 years of Ainsworth under his belt speak for itself. My favourite line was

“Gaz’s philosophy was never going to change; that’s not a straightforward thing to do and nor is it necessary. Effectiveness > aesthetics”

Has the much-talked about style of play from last season been changed or modified for the higher level?

Not at all. We still have our default style of play — very direct, and often extremely direct when Akinfenwa’s on the pitch — and we still adapt to the opposition to try and exploit their weaknesses and disrupt what they’re good at. Our fans often talk about plan A and B, but that’s a very binary way of looking at the game and Gaz will always make tweaks to one extent or another. If Uche Ikpeazu can stay fit, things might change slightly as he’s much more mobile than the big man and probably capable of playing up front on his own — which would allow us to accommodate three of our wealth of exciting wingers / number 10 options behind him — but Gaz’s philosophy was never going to change; that’s not a straightforward thing to do and nor is it necessary. Effectiveness > aesthetics.

“ My concern with the style of football was the 10 games before these 2 when we had no real pattern of play and were just lumping it forward, that's the big worry for me going forward.”

But was it not the style of football before Ainsworth that got us in the position we were. It had to change. I know how well we started the season with these players but that way of playing requires confidence along with talent. Confidence was clearly shot so a different approach was required and the result was, however it was achieved, we are in the Championship next season. Ainsworth deserves a chance.

That way of playing requires a different approach and not one Ainsworth can do which is fine but we can't keep pretending he's been forced into this, he's played the same way for 10 years. Critchley played a pretty similar way, 4-4-2, high press and gaps all over the place which is part of why he was sacked

Do you mean when like when someone posted “the Club has shifted their ambition down a gear”, the (your) reply was:
“That is probably actually very healthy, especially given the impoact that FFP will most liklety have on squad-building next season”.

And the manager calls for “an expectations reset”.

Sounds like a potential Josh Scowen type signing(s). Time will tell.

Josh Scowen joins a long list of holding midfielders we’ve abused that were respected elsewhere in my opinion.

For balance he turned in one of the worst performances I've ever seen a footballer give away at Blackpool in the cup. Determined to be sent off he had to be subbed after only 26 minutes.

If not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled. PG Wodehouse

GA's style was boring but effective, what was needed. Let's just see what he does next season.

I wonder if we will see a change Monday

I’m suggesting that…

1) Fretting about style, tactics, and strategy at this stage is premature, unfair, and unreasonable.

2) Lots of assumptions about GA’s style are unwarranted.

3) Lots of conclusions about GA’s style are exaggerated.

4) We should adjust our expectations as a fan base to fit our FFP situation and overall income, attendance, and circumstances.

That doesn’t mean expect relegation, just be a bit more open minded about our place in this league and don’t treat every defeat as a disaster.

5) A more direct / low possession / high shithouse style is legitimate and proven successful for plenty of teams in our range, assuming it’s applied practically.

6) We give the fcking bloke a chance longer than 4 months without a transfer window and a squad full of everyone else’s failures.

I'm not anti-GA, rather in 'antti-agreement' (see antti-h's considered post a few down from yours on page 4).

I also think that while your points 2 and 3 suggest we should all calm down a bit, the sentiment is cruelly clutched from us at point 5. I'm sure you're not advocating Gazball per se, but you certainly seem prepared to forewarn all Rfosi to be prepared to 'embrace' the prospect, should GA seek to use it as plan A.

I think he got lucky at Burnley with it, and it was enough to beat a woeful Stoke, but I'm not convinced it will be effective over the course of a season in the Championship and I very much doubt many will stomach perpetual shithousery on an industrial scale, as opposed to an occasional cottage industry if required.

But as I said here and on another fred, he deserves a preseason and good luck to him.

Doesn't have to mean that specifically, does it? My point was in response to many on this forum who seem to think we should still be in the market for signing a £10m Premier League striker with the aim of "pushing the boat out for promotion".
The context was that we are now fishing once again in the pool of (hopefully) well-researched freebies, gems from the lower leagues who will probably need some development input, and almost certainly loans again, depending on the deal that ties us into.
It doesn't have to mean "cloggers" which I believe is what you are inferring here, although, as others have pointed out, you can't fault Josh Scowen for the effort and service he gave this club or endorse the horrendous trolling he was on the end of during his time at LR.

Good. Because the "sign a f*cking striker" brigade were certainly out in force not that long ago. Hopefully the message that we have less of a pot to p*ss in even than this time last year now, might have finally sunk in, and when people start demanding Man City type entertainment and results (which they will) and throwing all kinds of sh*t at the management and the board (which some already seem to be priming themselves to do) they might remember that the real world doesn't quite work like that.

Gazball on 18:41 - May 2 with 1804 viewsdmm

One of my concerns is whether the board has decided to ditch both the club style of football and the plan to develop young players.

By appointing Ainsworth they've considerably broadened what the club style is and possibly changed it altogether. And, what about the development plan? Ainsworth seems to value older players a great deal as evidenced at Wycombe. He's spoken of needing leaders/generals/experience and wants to retain Martin. So I wonder how that fits in with the plan?

We should be able to tell quite a lot about all of this from the coming transfer window - who leaves and the type and age of player recruited. It's going to be a more than interesting few months.

Gazball on 18:53 - May 2 with 1788 viewsswisscottage

The problem is unless you have the kind of money Burnley had to put together the kind of squad they had, we are always going to fight an uphill battle to put together a side that can play Warbsball or Bealeball consistently over the season.

You are only ever one key player away being injured, on AFCON duty, or otherwise underperforming for a stretch of bad results, because at the end of the day your style of football is only ever built around one or two key individuals.

In our case we required an in-form Johansen, Chair and Willock to play that kind of football. Any one of those missing and it just didn't work and everyone starts whining about constantly passing the ball in front of the opposition and failing to have any meaningful possession, and then we over commit and lose possession and end up conceding on the counter attack.

With our budget, you can either have a pure footballing side, susceptible to bad runs when injuries hit, or you can have a more organised pragmatic approach to putting a side together which is more able to grind out results because they are less dependent on individuals.

To be honest I'd rather watch us making Stoke look like idiots with 80% possession and only two attempts on goal of any worth, whilst making the most of our possession, than watch us incessantly pass the ball between Dickie, Dunne, Dieng and Field for half the match as we did for many matches under Warburton, Beale, and Critchley.

He blooded a good few youngsters at Wycombe, including many of our own.

He was the first one to give Drewe a chance (as forced as it was) and I don’t remember anyone else putting Dixon Bonner on the bench until he did (I may be wrong).

He and Armstrong will get on like a house on fire I reckon.

I think necessity will be the master of our development system. I doubt he’s ever worked with the facilities we’ll have ready this summer either.

Huddersfield beat us at LR in a similar manner, not that I think we'll be conceding 80% possession very often whoever we get in the summer! That number was insane!

Nobody is demanding Man City football or sign a striker.

What some people don't want is us to turn into a Wimbledon tribute band but as has been said many times time will tell if GA can change his style.

For me I don't think he will and I would get rid now but happy to be proven wrong.

We replaced him with Sam Field who can trap a ball and pass unlike Scowen.

If Scowen is as good as you think he is why isn't he playing for a Championship side?

I liked Don Ball who was far better than Scowen

There was a whole season between Scowen leaving and Field joining.

Played at Sunderland in League One. Not to be sniffed at. Plenty of players play in lower leagues than they should.

Not saying he’s Patrick Veira, or even that we should re-sign him, just that we missed him.
