How was Rashford not interfering with play for their first goal yesterday?

How can you train defenders to deal with a situation like that? How many would’ve busted a gut to get back knowing that Rashford was in an offside position as he was making a move towards the ball and looked like he was going to play it?
We’d all be fuming if that goal was scored against us

Rashford moves as if he's running onto that pass. Defenders and goalkeeper react accordingly, therefore he's interfering. Should be relatively simple. If he'd stopped his run or moved off to the side with his hands up indicating he's clearly not involved, the defenders and goalkeeper could pursue/position for Fernandes alone rather than having to deal with them both. Covering defenders would change their running line, Ederson would take a different position, etc. So Rashford has gained a clear advantage for his team by being offside.

If the rules as they're written don't allow for an unambiguous of offside in this scenario (personally I think there's plenty in there which would allow for offside to be called here), then they need to be re-written.

The last bit is right imo.

Irrespective of what the rules say, that move was offside in every other way you'd want it interpreted. Otherwise you may as well have a "goal hanger" stood on the edge of the 18 yard box who can run around blocking defender's movements to allow a team mate a clear run in on goal.

That goal being allowed to stand yesterday is just insane by any set of standards, yet referees won't follow the LOTG and book goalies for holding onto the ball for more than the six seconds for fear of upsetting clubs and managers. The words "Lunatics" and "asylum" come to mind.

I agree. As a defender you've enough to be thinking about in a fraction of a second without thinking of whether the guy isn't actually offside, even though he looks offside because he's not interfering with play. And if you're having to introduce that thought in a defender's head, then you are interfering with play, i

As Gordon Strachan once said "if you're on the pitch, you are interfering with play".

Your last paragraph is spot on and a debate we have quite often in the refereeing community.

As you say, you CAN use the letter of the law here to justify a goal, but, as you say, if we're sticking to the letter of the law here, why not in many other scenarios?

If that's not offside then you might as well leave a striker up on the edge of the area.

Ridiculous that that's not called for offiside, Lino was right.
Rashford at one point is right on top of the ball.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Well there is nothing stopping you leaving a striker (nearly) wherever you like, it only gets complicated once play/the ball come near!

The problem as I see it is that the same law can be used to allow the goal but conversely it can be used to disallow the goal.
