Walcott’s contract sure was worth it 21:41 - May 12 with 5558 views | ElijahK | So a PL player on a pro contract can now have the time to go and be a pundit for a midweek game! Sheesh just sums up how much of a waste his contract was

Sometimes i think we need to get a reality check, Theo Walcott didn't cost us a penny in signing on fees, even if we are paying him £50k a week, that is only £2.5 million a year in wages. In Premier League terms peanuts, yes it hasn't been brilliant as he has played in just 9 League games, but we won 3 of those and drew 3, so 12 points out of those 9 games in total, So he has played a part, just not a big part, ironically since his last appearance on 9th Feb we have gone to the dogs , he became a bit of a scapegoat but to label him one of the worst decisions Ralph made is a little unfair, He was a cheap option that we needed to build up the squad a little at a time when we had no money for transfers

My point above was not aimed at any individual, just that over the past 8 years we have become a supporter base where a portion of that see every little issue and try to make it seem a massive one.

Even if we are paying him 50k per week? It's 75k per week. https://saintsmarching.com/2021/05/24/southampton-walcott-takes-huge-50-pay-cut-

This is a very reliable source isnt it, its a third hand story starting from the Athletic, they also claim he had more lucrative offers from MLS clubs. That should tell you something, £75k a week would have made him around the 4-5th highest paid player in the league, it is not a high paid league, last season there were only 72 players making 1 million dollars a year . It is not a league you go to if you want to make money, unless you are truly a David Beckham Google a few things before you try to make a point

The point that you underestimated his wages by 50%? If we hadn't spunked the money on Theo we could have afforded a level of wages that would have kept Ings, I can't really think it was his life long desire to play for the Villa...

This, sure it was a waste of time, effort and money, but once the decision was made, no point in getting our knickers in a twist every time he surfaces, he’s not a bad bloke..

Very good point about Ings wages. Nothing against Theo but give me Ings on 150k a week and Theo playing elsewhere please. Definitely would have finished higher up the table
Walcott’s contract sure was worth it on 11:23 - May 13 with 3815 views | Sadoldgit | We were calling out for a bigger squad with experience so it wasn’t a bad call at the time. Was it just down to Ralph or did others have an input? How do we know that zings would have stayed if offered a few more quid? If he did, how would that have affected others who were on less? There are many things to factor in. Some things pay off, some don’t. Ings has hardly set the world alight at Villa and wasn’t on his best form when he left. He might have got himself injured again. We wouldn’t be having this conversation if Armstrong had been an oven ready replacement or if Che Adams had upped his game. Walcott was always going to be a squad player.

Paying Ings 150k a week would likely have messed up the wage structure & we got rid of him at the right time in any case. What Ralph has referred to several times is the influence Walcott has behind the scenes. He's a good influence on the younger players and in & around the dressing room. It's difficult to put a price on that.

Well it's not. The price is £75,000 per week for 2 years, guaranteed money. He must be the world's most highly paid child minder. [Post edited 13 May 2022 11:55]

These types if players (Walcott, Lyanco, Salisu and so on) are all we can afford. Ralph has to work with rubbish to average players. He has no choice.until we demand more investment in the team. [Post edited 13 May 2022 14:25]

We are fourth favourites to go down next year already (without the play off winners included), behind Bournemouth, Fulham and Brentford. As it stands I’d say Fulham and Brentford have a better chance of staying up than us, be an interesting summer to see if we can improve our chances.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. You could also argue that we wasted money on Armstrong. I sure there are many things the club would have done differently if they had a crystal ball.

But it less needed Sherlock Holmes than Eamonn Holmes to work it out though. Walcott started out ok in his loan period but tailed off badly the last few months and did f'k all so it was very obvious we shouldn't have signed a 33 yer old player whose game was based solely on pace - whose pace has totally gone.

This is true but we have to make difficult choices as we don't have the money. We all want Saints to just spend on a proven player but they can't or won't. It means we have to take a gamble on a player who used to be good who might come good again or a young player who might get good. I'm sure we would all rather just buy a proven player in the PL, but we get outbid by West Ham, Everton, Villa every time. It makes managing Saints so difficult. The fans need to start putting demands on the new owners to buy 3 or 4 real quality players. Until we do, next season will be no different. [Post edited 13 May 2022 16:04]

Yeah I do agree there, that if we ever want older experienced players, they’re almost always the poor ones, and until we get more investment that ain’t gonna change anytime soon
