Did Martin realise they were a man down? 20:11 - Jan 8 with 3400 viewsBillyChong

What was that all about? Playing keep ball against ten men. Manning was a threat down the left before the red card. Yet, Martin pushes him inside and sticks Obafemi on the touch line. Absolutely bizarre. We allowed Southampton to sit back and relax.

Silverstein needs to get the American Express out and strengthen the defence before he jets back across the ocean. We are shipping bagfuls of goals and don’t have the skill set to play Martin ball from the back.

I think a player who wins the majority of their duels is an asset in that position, absolutely. And if you can't win them you have to at least jump with your man. Leaning into them might be enough in midfield but there's enough old-fashioned centre forwards in the Championship to take advantage of that gap in someone's game.

Defending against balls in the air has changed in modern football. It’s no longer two guys trying to outjump or outmuscle each other.

If you watch, if a high ball is played up field towards a big front man defenders will usually just try prevent him from connecting with it and another defender runs behind to pick up the loose ball.

This type of tactic is mostly used by teams that want the ball on the floor and are comfortable playing out from the back with the ball still under head height. It doesn’t always work but mostly does.

Yup, which is why we play with 3 centre back

And is possibly why, even when down to 10 men, Southampton managed to find so much space in behind our defence.

We are too one paced all across the team. We have no true pace in attack or defence. We leak goals but all too often, not because the opposition create them through great play but through our own poor passing, movement and marking.

Other managers would probably have gone wider and tried getting in behind with quick play so they could get a stream of crosses and passes into the box. Martin stuck to his ideas.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Liverpool's centre halves win twice as many aerials per game as ours do, with a much higher success rate, so I don't really buy the argument that "modern football" doesn't care about defensive headers. Man City have Rodri in midfield who puts up top centre half-like aerial numbers. Top managers value the ability to compete for and win headers.

Defenders head the ball, ergo, they make defensive headers as opposed to attacking headers.
Ours do not ;they cant or wont.
Our goalkeeper isnt the best and we need the ball to be cleared when it is in the air;that s done by heading the ball until they stop it.
adly, other barstad teams head the ball into the net -the opponents net that is.

I d settle for our defenders simply defending .

We are a Championship club...with Championship players. They are a Premier League club...with Premier League players. Premier League players are better than Championship players.
WHAT PART OF THIS....DON'T YOU ALL GET?

.....and Cambridge Utd are 16th in League One, two Divisions below Newcastle United.

A team with a man down should defend as with full compliment.
Attacking options only are reduced and fatigue can set in.

.

An 11 man Arsenal. ;-)

with 300% more shots on target. yet only 36% possession. and played the best, high energy, exciting brand.

arsenal resorting to long balls and long throws into the box.

Maybe someone should have told that to Huddersfield a side we have beaten this season beofre they beat the 11 players of Burnley and the same of NOtts Forest who were beaten by HUddersfield yet they beat PL Arsenal with 11 players.

We couldnt beat a team with 10 players!!!

and yet 3-4 crosses into the box are ineffective and that's throughout all leagues and divisions so maybe there shouldn't be such an emphasis placed on playing 6ft .6 lumps

Hudds will have a lot of passionate support and we will have to be brave a a team.
They are big and physical and have finishers who will hound our defenders as they stoke the ball around to each other. They are good at set pieces and will attack our keeper.
They have players comfortable with where they play.

REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT
