Not generally a fan, as I tend to miss good visual stuff whilst trying to read the dialogue, but having just watched the Japanese detective in London series on BBC (can’t recall the name but ‘Duty / Shame’....made me think......

Wages of Fear and Les Diaboliques are two 50s French films by Henri-Georges Clouzot (no relation). Brilliant plotting and suspense.
Blind Shaft is very similar in tone to Wages of Fear, even though it was made (and banned) in China in 2003. Dirty deeds in cowboy coal mines, dark in every way.
Leviathan is a grim story of modernish (2014) Russia. Very well done.
