Dan James to sign new deal on 11:40 - Mar 30 by jasper_T | If a big club comes in with a serious offer this summer they'll want to move. It's why they want a release clause in the first place, don't want to be tied down if the club decides to get stubborn/see sense as in January. |
This is what Dan James’s agent said to icwales when the Leeds transfer fell through “Swansea made no attempt to keep James and at the first sign of money, they couldn’t show him the door fast enough” Against that Swansea strongly refutes the claims But you could ask Why didn’t Swansea negotiate a new contract with James after giving new contracts to Roberts and Rodon and a few others A new Contract for James was never discussed with him or his agent

Dan James to sign new deal on 10:09 - Mar 30 by jasper_T | They want a release clause and it's likely no higher than what we anticipate being able to sell him for in the summer even without a new contract. So why bother? It's a pay rise and signing fee for no benefit on our end. |
I totally agree He will get a pay rise for as little time as he is at Swansea plus a signing on fee. And will go to whoever on the same amount of money that Leeds were prepared to pay for him There will be no horse trading for him as he wants the transfer fee fixed into his contract It will be the club that pays the highest wages

Dan James to sign new deal on 13:22 - Mar 30 by valleyboy | James will be in the last year of his contract next season and will be gone for virtually nothing when is contract ends Dan James’s agent is one of the shrewdest in the buisness and he’s only interested in what he can get for James and of course himself But there that’s what a football player expects him to do |
Keeping him here for another season on his current wage is a win for Swansea City even if he leaves on a free afterwards. Not the ideal outcome but nothing to be frightened of if suitable terms can't be agreed.

Don’t be ridiculous. You’re, in effect, saying that paying a loan fee for James for one year in the order of £10m is good business.

I'm sure you've asked that before and been answered. DJ signed his last extension in Nov 2017 and didn't establish himself in the first team until a couple of months into the season. Grimes, Rodon and Roberts had less than 12 months remaining on their deals. Completely different levels of urgency, and there's no point handing out new deals when preparing to cash in on a player. His agent's fake outrage that we didn't offer him a new contract while accepting Leeds offer (as if any club would do that) is beside the point.

Not the same urgency??? For possibly one of the best prospects that Swansea have had for since Ben Davies and Joe Allan All I will say that somebody in Swansea took their eye off the ball And as for you saying it will be worth if Swansea ran James’s contract down That’s an odd one to say

You're comparing 9 months left on contracts with the option to speak to foreign clubs imminently, with 18 months left. Different urgency entirely. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Didn't say it was good "business". But Championship clubs have paid more for a better shot at promotion, haven't they. Keeping a player who could potentially be the best winger in the division if he keeps progressing would be a boost. As a worst case scenario it's not something to terrify fans of the club.

What’s to say that he won’t attract foreign clubs Look at the player that went from Man City to Bayern On last Sundays showing playing for Wales. James was a much better player

He can't start talking to clubs like Ramsey did until January 2020, though. That's what I mean by urgency. Offering him a new contract last Oct/Nov with the rest of the lads wasn't a priority, he'd only played a handful of good games for us at that point (Ipswich on the 6th of October was his first standout showing) and was 12 months into a 3 year deal. By comparison Roberts had been looking like becoming a regular since this time last year, and Rodon established himself in August. And even with their contracts running down it was a bunch of panic over nothing, everything got sorted in due time.

You said it was a win for Swansea City. That’s ridiculous. Keeping him for a year and him then leaving for free would be as far away from a win for Swansea City as it’s possible to imagine.

He could tear his hamstring and lose all his pace the day after signing a big new contract.

One plus note your team are 5 points off safety with Chelsea and Man City up next.

That also wouldn’t be a win for Swansea City. But that would be an unfortunate thing to happen. Allowing him to run down a contract rather than selling him for the sake of one year wouldn’t be unfortunate, it would be stupidity.

Sell him. Running down the contract would be the height of stupidity. And ever more insane to suggest this useless board would even consider it Sell. For as much as possible.

Depends how much we can get And how much this 'black hole' actually is. The ins and outs over the last 3 years suggest around 20m - time will tell.

James is in the driving seat and not Swansea City in what contract he signs He’s the one that will dictate what he wants written into his contract via his agent and if this fixed transfer fee is put in then it won’t be more than Leeds were prepared to pay Swansea Lower the fixed fee the more James will get as a signing on fee or it could be the big difference in his wages Surely you know who his agent is and he couldn’t care two hoots about Swansea City

Pointless the club doing anything on those terms. Would get more with no extension.
